Windows 11 is not proven to be the universal cause of Sons of the Forest multiplayer problems. Steam lists 64-bit Windows 10 as the minimum operating system, but that is not the same as an explicit Windows 11 incompatibility. If co-op suddenly stopped working, the more useful suspects are mismatched game builds, damaged files, firewall permissions, VPN or security software, Steam’s network state, corrupted local multiplayer data, and router or NAT conditions.
Work through the fixes below in order. They start with quick, reversible checks and postpone risky changes such as deleting local data or forwarding router ports.
Steam’s game listing confirms that the game is distributed through Steam and supports online co-op. For technical help, Steam directs players to the game’s official support page.
60-second triage
- Have both players restarted Steam and confirmed that downloads are complete?
- Are both copies on the same game branch, with neither player accidentally using a beta branch?
- Does single-player work?
- Can the other player host successfully?
- Is a VPN, third-party firewall, antivirus network filter, or overlay active?
- Are Steam and Sons of the Forest allowed through Windows Defender Firewall?
- Did the problem begin after a game, Steam, Windows, driver, or router change?
Match the symptom to the first checks
| Symptom | Test these areas first |
|---|---|
| a friend’s invite does nothing | Steam overlay, Steam connection, firewall, VPN, and security software |
| The server list is empty | Steam/network state, firewall, Windows network profile, and possible service problems |
| The host loads but the joiner remains in the lobby | Firewall permissions, VPN, NAT, host switching, and version matching |
| The joining player returns to the title screen | Game versions, damaged files, local multiplayer data, and blocked network traffic |
| The game reports an outdated or mismatched version | Pending Steam updates, game branches, and interrupted patching |
| Single-player works but co-op fails | Steam services, firewall, network path, and multiplayer configuration |
| Co-op disconnects randomly | Wi-Fi stability, VPN, firewall, router/NAT, and the host’s connection |
This is diagnostic guidance, not a list of confirmed developer causes. The same symptom can have more than one cause.

1. Update Steam, Windows, and both game installations
Version mismatches are the first thing to eliminate, especially when the game displays an “outdated version” message or one player can enter a lobby while the other cannot.
- Exit Sons of the Forest.
- Fully restart Steam. Click Steam in the top-left corner, choose Exit, then open Steam again.
- Open Library, right-click Sons of the Forest, and select Properties.
- Open Updates and make sure automatic updates are enabled.
- Wait for Steam to finish every pending download before launching.
- Have both players restart Steam and launch the game from the Steam library rather than an old shortcut.
- Check that both players are using the same game branch. Neither player should use a beta branch unless both deliberately selected the same branch.
Also install pending Windows updates and current graphics or network drivers if the issue began after a system change. Steam’s own troubleshooting guidance recommends restarting Steam, updating Windows and drivers, verifying files, checking requirements, and investigating network configuration; see its restart and update guidance.
Do not reinstall immediately. Steam may still be patching in the background, and restarting both clients often clears a stale update state.
2. Verify the Steam game files
Verification can repair missing or damaged installation files. It will not fix a blocked connection, router problem, Steam service issue, corrupted save, or incompatible mod, but it is a low-risk next step.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Sons of the Forest and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, restart Steam, and test co-op again.
Steam documents this process in its file verification instructions. Some local configuration files may fail validation normally, so a validation message does not automatically mean that the installation is broken. Restart Steam and test before repeatedly verifying or deleting the entire game.

3. Allow Steam and the game through Windows Defender Firewall
A firewall block is particularly plausible when the host can create or load a session but the other player cannot join, or when invites appear to do nothing. It is a possible cause, not a confirmed explanation for every multiplayer failure.
Use an app exception first
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Firewall & network protection.
- Choose Allow an app through firewall.
- Click Change settings.
- Make sure Steam is allowed on the appropriate network type.
- If Sons of the Forest is missing, select Allow another app and browse to the game executable in its Steam installation folder.
- For a trusted home network, prefer the Private network option. Avoid broadly allowing the program on public networks unless you understand the exposure.
- Retest multiplayer on both PCs.
Windows may classify your home connection as Public. You can review the active profile under Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then select the connected network and check Network profile type. Only change it to Private when it is a trusted network.
Microsoft says that allowing a known app is generally safer than opening an inbound port. Its current instructions are in Firewall and network protection and the risks of allowing apps or ports.
Do not permanently turn off Windows Firewall, allow every executable in the Steam folder, or download a “firewall fix” utility. A Steam Community report describes an outbound rule for the game executable helping one user, but that is a community report rather than a universal or official fix. Treat it only as a controlled last-resort diagnostic test.
4. Test without VPNs, third-party security tools, and overlays
Steam identifies nonessential software and security tools as possible sources of launch and connectivity conflicts. A VPN can sometimes bypass a bad route, but it can also add latency or create a more restrictive NAT path. Do not buy a VPN as a default solution; test once with an existing VPN disconnected.

- Close the game.
- Disconnect from any VPN.
- Temporarily pause third-party antivirus or firewall network filtering, if installed.
- Close network-management tools and traffic filters.
- Disable nonessential overlays for one test, including Discord, GeForce Experience, AMD, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, recording, and capture overlays.
- Restart Steam.
- Test a simple private co-op session.
- Re-enable security software immediately after the test.
If multiplayer works only while a security tool is paused, turn protection back on and create a narrowly scoped exception for Steam or the game instead of leaving the tool disabled.
5. Refresh Steam and Windows network state
Use this step when Steam appears online but no servers appear, invites fail without an error, or multiplayer stopped after a network change.
Recommended Free Tools
- Restart the PC.
- Restart the router.
- Sign out of Steam and sign in again.
- Try Ethernet, or use a stable Wi-Fi connection close to the router.
- Test again before changing advanced router settings.
If the problem continues, open Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator and run:
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset
Restart Windows afterward. The first command refreshes the local DNS resolver cache; the second resets Winsock’s network catalog. These are general Windows networking diagnostics, not an Endnight-specific repair procedure.
Use isolation tests instead of guessing
- Have the other player host.
- Try both a Steam friend invite and the in-game server browser.
- Test briefly on another network, such as a phone hotspot, only to identify the source.
- If a hotspot works but the home connection does not, focus on the router, NAT, DNS, ISP filtering, or security software rather than reinstalling the game.
6. Back up your data and rebuild local multiplayer configuration
Community reports point to local files beneath:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowEndnightSonsOfTheForest
Some reports mention multiplayer-related files or folders beneath the user’s SteamID save directory. These are community observations, not an official Endnight repair procedure, so use a reversible backup rather than deleting files blindly.

- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
- Close Sons of the Forest and Steam.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Paste
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowEndnightSonsOfTheForestand press Enter. - Copy the entire folder to the desktop or another safe location. Keep this backup.
- Rename the live folder to
SonsOfTheForest.backup. - Restart Steam and launch the game so it can create fresh local configuration.
- Test multiplayer before restoring anything.
- If the problem remains, close the game and restore the backup.
- If the reset helps, restore saves selectively rather than replacing the new folder wholesale.
Do not delete the entire Saves folder without a backup. Steam file verification repairs installation files; renaming the local Endnight folder tests settings and multiplayer state; neither step should be confused with deleting valuable world saves.

7. Isolate router, NAT, and hosting limitations
Leave router changes until the simpler fixes and host-switching tests are complete. Ordinary Steam-hosted co-op does not justify copying a port number from an unrelated guide, and opening ports increases exposure.
Test the host before changing the router
- Have the other player host.
- Try a direct Steam invite.
- Test on stable wired or strong Wi-Fi connections.
- Disconnect VPNs on both PCs.
- Try another network if available.
If only one person can host, the problem is probably specific to that host’s firewall, network, NAT, router, ISP, or local configuration—not a universal Windows 11 problem.
Peer-hosted co-op versus dedicated servers
Do not treat ordinary Steam co-op and a dedicated server as the same setup. Dedicated servers may require separately configured game and query ports, protocol rules, a static local IP, Windows Firewall permissions, router forwarding, and a network that is not behind restrictive CGNAT or double NAT.
Community discussions mention ports such as 8766, but those reports concern particular configurations and may refer to dedicated servers rather than ordinary peer-hosted co-op. There is no basis here for presenting 8766—or any other number—as a universal multiplayer fix. Verify the current dedicated-server documentation and configuration for the exact server version before forwarding anything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBest Value
- ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — sturdy closed earcups fully cover ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation.

- RAZER HYPERCLEAR CARDIOID MIC — Improved pickup pattern ensures more voice and less noise as it tapers off towards the mic’s back and sides
If you operate a dedicated server, check the configured game port, query port if applicable, UDP/TCP requirements, server machine’s static local IP, Windows Firewall rules, router destination, CGNAT/double-NAT status, and the network adapter to which the server is bound. Make every rule specific and reversible.
What not to do
- Do not claim that Windows 11 itself breaks Sons of the Forest multiplayer; the available evidence does not establish that.
- Do not permanently disable Windows Firewall.
- Do not forward random ports before testing app permissions and host switching.
- Do not delete AppData or save folders without backing up the complete Endnight folder.
- Do not download replacement DLLs, unofficial “multiplayer patches,” registry cleaners, or paid repair tools.
- Do not treat a community workaround as an official Endnight fix.
- Do not assume Secure Boot or TPM is required. The available Sons of the Forest sources do not establish that requirement.
When to contact support
Contact the official support route after recording the details that distinguish a version problem from a network or local-data problem. Include:
- Windows edition and build.
- Game version and branch for both players.
- Whether single-player works for each player.
- The exact error text and when it appears.
- Whether switching hosts changes the result.
- Whether the issue changes with VPNs, overlays, or third-party security disabled.
- Whether another network works.
- The approximate date the failure began and any update or router change around that time.
- Relevant logs if support requests them.
Steam’s technical issue page for the game identifies Endnight as the official support contact and lists [email protected].
Do you need to buy anything?
No. You do not need a VPN, antivirus replacement, gaming optimizer, registry cleaner, or paid repair utility to try these fixes. Buying another copy of Sons of the Forest will not resolve a firewall, NAT, Steam-service, or local-configuration problem. Existing owners should troubleshoot first.
