Hollow Knight: Silksong is already available; the wait now is for its Sea of Sorrows expansion, which Team Cherry has planned for 2026 without announcing a specific release date. Until then, these seven games, across genres, offer different ways for Silksong fans to pass the time—from precise platforming and demanding boss fights to hidden routes, survival pressure, and pinball-powered exploration.
These are recommendations based on the kind of experience each game offers, not a hands-on ranking or measured comparison. Check your regional storefront for current platform availability before buying.
Team Cherry’s official game page lists Silksong as available now, while its Sea of Sorrows announcement names 2026 as the planned release year.

1. Blue Fire: for precise platforming in 3D
Blue Fire is the closest pick here for players who want platforming challenges wrapped in a metroidvania structure, but it shifts the action into 3D. Its appeal is movement: precision jumps, dashes, and wall climbing give you a different set of skills to master than Silksong’s side-scrolling traversal.
Combat also works differently. The roundup highlights Z-targeting and blocking, so expect a more deliberate approach to facing enemies rather than a direct copy of Silksong’s combat. Choose it if moving carefully through demanding platforming sections matters more to you than matching Silksong’s exact feel.
2. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link: for old-school side-scrolling action
Zelda II combines side-scrolling action with RPG elements and a reputation for difficulty. It is the retro choice for players curious about the older lineage of action-adventure games that helped inspire Hollow Knight.

The listed way to play it is through the Nintendo Switch Online NES library on Nintendo Switch. This is a distinctly older design, rather than a modern metroidvania built to reproduce Silksong’s pacing or systems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Cuphead: for punishing, learnable boss fights
If your favorite Silksong moments are the fights where you learn an opponent’s patterns, then dodge and try again, Cuphead is the most focused match. Its multi-phase boss battles reward observation and precise movement.
The trade-off is structure: Cuphead is a run-and-gun game, not an exploration-led metroidvania. Pick it for the boss-fight challenge, not for interconnected areas or a similar exploration loop.

4. Tunic: for exploration and hidden routes
Tunic is an isometric action-adventure centered on exploration and discovery. Its distinctive hook is collecting pages from an instruction manual: piecing them together helps you understand the world and uncover how to progress.
It suits players who enjoy noticing a suspicious path, testing an assumption, or finding meaning in incomplete clues. The camera and presentation differ from Silksong, but the pleasure of uncovering more than the game initially explains makes it a strong exploration pick.
5. Mina the Hollower: for a challenging retro-inspired adventure
Mina the Hollower is recommended for its retro-inspired action-adventure style, challenge, and secrets. Optional modifiers are intended to make the difficulty more manageable, offering some flexibility for players who want the world and discovery without the full challenge.

Its release status should be checked before treating it as a game you can play now. The roundup’s platform list is not confirmation that the game is currently released or available in every region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Rain World: for survival in an unfamiliar ecosystem
Rain World is the most substantial shift in priorities on this list. It emphasizes scavenging, finding shelter, and surviving predators in a world that can feel like an ecosystem rather than a sequence of encounters arranged for the player.
The roundup contrasts its progression with Silksong’s equipment upgrades: Rain World does not offer that same equipment-upgrade path. Choose it if the appeal is a dangerous, unfamiliar world and the pressure of staying alive, rather than a familiar upgrade-driven metroidvania journey.
Best Value

7. Yoku’s Island Express: for exploration with pinball movement
Yoku’s Island Express is the oddball recommendation: a metroidvania built around a ball and pinball paddles instead of a conventional jump button. You explore an island while using pinball-style movement to navigate it, creating a very different rhythm from Silksong.
It is a good choice if you want exploration and a connected world but would rather try a fresh movement system than another game that closely imitates Hollow Knight’s platforming.
Quick Recap
How to pick the right stopgap
- For precision movement: start with Blue Fire.
- For difficult boss encounters: choose Cuphead.
- For hidden paths and exploration: try Tunic.
- For a retro action challenge: look at Zelda II or Mina the Hollower; check Mina’s current release status first.
- For survival rather than upgrades: pick Rain World.
- For an unconventional way to move through a metroidvania: play Yoku’s Island Express.
