Roblox Error Code 277 means the client lost—or could not maintain—a connection to an experience’s game server. You may see “Lost connection to the game server, please reconnect” or “Please check your internet connection and try again.” It is not a ban code, and it does not prove that your entire internet connection is offline.

Work through these seven steps in order. They start with quick checks for a Roblox or experience outage, then isolate your device and network before you reinstall anything.

Updated August 2026.

Quick answer

  1. Check Roblox Status and try two or three other experiences.
  2. Fully close Roblox, restart your device, and restart your router or modem.
  3. Test a phone hotspot or Ethernet connection.
  4. Allow Roblox through your firewall and security software.
  5. Reinstall Roblox and clear damaged local data.
  6. Check router restrictions, browser extensions, and optional DNS diagnostics.
  7. Contact Roblox Support with precise evidence.

What Error 277 means

Roblox defines 277 as a failure to establish or maintain a network connection with a game server on PC, Mac, and mobile devices. Roblox lists it separately from other codes: 279 (ID 17) is a failed game connection, 280 can indicate an outdated client, 267 and 600 are experience-ban messages, and 268 concerns unexpected client behavior or a kick. See Roblox’s error-code documentation.

A browser may load websites normally while Roblox still suffers from intermittent Wi-Fi, blocked UDP traffic, firewall inspection, router filtering, a damaged installation, or a problem in one experience.

A clean status page cannot rule out a regional, ISP, device, or experience-specific fault.

Step 1: Check Roblox Status and another experience

  1. Open https://status.roblox.com/.
  2. Look specifically at Games and Game Join. If Roblox lists an incident, wait for recovery instead of repeatedly reinstalling.
  3. If no incident is listed, join two or three unrelated experiences.
  4. Note whether 277 appears immediately, after a few minutes, or only in one experience, and ask friends whether they see the same behavior.

If other experiences work, a total local outage is less likely. It does not prove the affected experience is broken; it is an isolation test.

Step 2: Restart Roblox, your device, and the network

  1. Fully quit Roblox rather than leaving it suspended.
  2. Restart the computer, phone, tablet, Fire device, or Chromebook.
  3. Restart the router or modem if you control it.
  4. Wait until the connection is fully restored, then launch Roblox again.

Roblox’s Error 277 guidance includes rebooting and force-closing on mobile. A restart can clear a stalled session, but it cannot repair a blocked firewall rule, failing router, damaged installation, or service incident.

Step 3: Test a different connection

Use a temporary phone hotspot, or connect by Ethernet if possible. You can also move closer to the router or try whichever 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band is more stable in your home. Pause large downloads, cloud backups, and high-bandwidth streams while testing.

  • Hotspot works, home Wi-Fi fails: investigate the router, ISP, filtering, or wireless interference.
  • Both networks fail on one computer: investigate Roblox files, firewall rules, or operating-system permissions.
  • Every device and network fails: recheck Roblox Status and prepare a support request.

A speed-test result alone is not decisive: intermittent packet loss can disconnect a real-time game even when download speed looks high. Roblox recommends trying another internet source and notes that wired connectivity can help rule out wireless problems. See its Error 277 guidance and general connection guidance.

Step 4: Check firewall, antivirus, and browser extensions

  1. Temporarily test whether your security software is blocking Roblox; do not leave protection disabled.
  2. If the test changes the result, turn protection back on and add the official Roblox application to its allow list.
  3. Review both Windows Firewall and any third-party security suite, and update the security product.
  4. On a school, work, hotel, or family-managed network, ask the administrator rather than bypassing controls.
  5. If you launch from a browser, disable ad blockers or privacy extensions for Roblox temporarily, or try a private window or another supported browser.

Roblox says antivirus and internet-security software can prevent Roblox or Roblox Studio from reaching the internet and advises allowing the application where appropriate. Its firewall guidance explains the issue. Never install an unknown “network optimizer” or unofficial Roblox executable.

Step 5: Reinstall Roblox and clear damaged local data

Windows 10 or earlier

  1. Uninstall Roblox through Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Press Win + R, type CMD, and press Enter.
  3. Run:
cd AppDataLocal
rmdir /s Roblox

Type y when prompted, restart the computer, and reinstall Roblox from the official Roblox website or the official Microsoft distribution channel available to you.

Windows 11

  1. Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and uninstall Roblox.
  2. Press Win + R, type CMD, and press Enter.
  3. Run the same commands:
cd AppDataLocal
rmdir /s Roblox

Confirm with y, restart, and reinstall. The command deletes the Roblox folder inside your current user’s local AppData path; type it exactly as shown after uninstalling Roblox. Do not substitute registry cleaners or broad deletion scripts. Official paths and commands are documented by Roblox in its Error 277 article.

macOS

Move Roblox to Trash and reinstall it. Check System Settings/Preferences > Privacy & Security for required permissions, then test another network.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Restart the device and force-close Roblox.
  2. Delete Roblox and reinstall it from the App Store.
  3. Confirm the device date and time are correct.
  4. Test another network.

Roblox labels this sequence for iOS 12 and above; platform support and requirements can change.

Android, Amazon Fire, and Chromebook

Force-close Roblox, restart the device, reinstall it from the official app store, check date and time, and test another network. On ChromeOS, update ChromeOS and reinstall the Roblox app if applicable. Roblox’s current support page lists Android 6 and above, supported Fire generations, and ChromeOS 53 and above; treat those as the requirements displayed on that page on the update date, not a permanent guarantee.

Step 6: Check router restrictions and optional network diagnostics

Router and managed-network rules

Roblox says its client does not use one fixed outgoing port. Its general connection article lists UDP ports 49152–65535 and explains that blocked traffic can prevent connection. Ordinary players should not blindly forward that entire range. Instead, check parental controls, web filters, captive portals, and UDP restrictions, or ask the ISP or network administrator for help.

DNS

Trying a reputable DNS provider is an optional, reversible diagnostic for name-resolution problems. It is not a guaranteed Error 277 fix and will not repair packet loss, firewall blocking, Wi-Fi interference, or a broken experience. If changing DNS does nothing, return to the hotspot and firewall tests rather than repeating it.

VPNs and third-party launchers

A VPN can change routing and may reveal an ISP-path problem, but it can add latency, trigger security checks, violate network policies, or create another failure point. Treat a temporary improvement as evidence about routing, not as an official permanent solution. Unofficial Roblox launchers are not Roblox-supported remedies.

Step 7: Contact Roblox Support with useful evidence

If the first six steps fail, use https://www.roblox.com/support or Roblox Help. Include:

  • Your Roblox username and the exact Error 277 wording.
  • Device model, operating-system version, and Roblox app/client version if visible.
  • Whether every experience fails or only one, and whether the disconnect is immediate or delayed.
  • Whether another device, Ethernet connection, or hotspot works.
  • The date and approximate time of failures.
  • Recent changes to the router, antivirus, VPN, device, or ISP.
  • Screenshots or logs if Support requests them.

These details let Support distinguish a client installation, network path, experience, service, or account-related problem without guessing.

When the usual fixes do not work

  • Reinstalling did nothing: prioritize router/ISP testing, firewall review, wireless stability, status checks, and the one-experience test.
  • Your internet works for everything else: web browsing and streaming can continue despite packet loss or blocked real-time game traffic.
  • Only some games work: different experiences can use different servers, sizes, scripts, and connection behavior.
  • School, work, hotel, or public Wi-Fi: filtering or captive portals may require administrator help; do not bypass organizational controls.
  • Child or family-managed device: involve the account holder before changing firewall, router, or parental-control settings.
  • Unsupported environment: Roblox says outdated mobile operating systems, virtual machines, and cloud computers may not be supported. Check Roblox’s current requirements rather than relying on old platform labels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Roblox show Error 277 when my internet works?

Error 277 concerns the connection between the Roblox client and a game server. A browser connection can remain usable while Wi-Fi packet loss, UDP filtering, firewall inspection, routing, or one experience causes a disconnect.

Can changing DNS fix Error 277?

It can help only when name resolution is the underlying problem. DNS will not fix packet loss, blocked traffic, a service incident, or a broken experience, so treat it as an optional diagnostic.

Should I use a VPN?

Not as a default fix. A VPN may change a faulty route, but it can add latency, violate network policies, or create new connection problems.

Why does Error 277 happen in only one game?

That pattern points toward the experience or its server path, although it does not prove the experience is broken. Test other experiences and ask friends whether they can join.

Does reinstalling Roblox delete my account or Robux?

Uninstalling and reinstalling the client does not delete your Roblox account or Robux. You will need to sign in again, and local app data is removed.

Is Error 277 the same as Error 279?

No. Roblox describes 277 as a lost or unmaintained game-server connection; 279 (ID 17) indicates that the client failed to connect to the game.

How do I know whether Roblox is down?

Check the live official status page at https://status.roblox.com/ and look at Games and Game Join. A clear page does not rule out a regional, ISP, device, or experience-specific problem.
