For more character-creation choices in Skyrim Special Edition on PC, start with KS Hairdos SSE for sheer variety, Immersive KS Hairdos for a smaller curated selection, or Comely Coiffures if you want vanilla hairstyles replaced rather than a new menu of options. For a different hair finish, Salt and Wind changes textures without adding styles. These recommendations are for PC players using Special Edition; check each Nexus page for matching files, dependencies, and current compatibility before installing.
Which Skyrim hair mod fits what you want?
| Mod | What it changes | Best for | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| KS Hairdos SSE | Adds a large selection of hairstyles | Players who want the most stated variety | The Nexus page lists 1,058 hairstyles: 951 female and 107 male. That is the page’s reported count, not an independently verified in-game count. |
| Apachii Sky Hair SSE | Adds hair options | Players looking for another broad pack | Review the page’s files and edition directions to choose the assets you need. |
| Immersive KS Hairdos | Replaces the KS Hairdos ESP with a curated selection | Players who want fewer, more grounded choices | Requires the original KS Hairdos assets; its author reports about 192 female and 22 male options. |
| Comely Coiffures | Replaces vanilla hairstyle records for non-beast races | Players who want vanilla characters and styles refreshed | Conflicts with other hair replacers; check dependencies and FaceGen guidance. |
| Salt and Wind – Rough Hair for KS Hairdos SE | Retextures KS styles | Players who like KS shapes but want a rougher finish | Use the file matching your KS Hairdos version. The page reports compatibility with Immersive KS Hairdos. |
| Salt and Wind – KS Hairdos – Update | Retextures additional KS styles missing from other Salt and Wind retextures | Players seeking more consistent texture coverage | Version 2.0 was last updated June 27, 2025; its page says it supports KS Hairdos SSE through version 1.10. |
The seventh option is a combination rather than another collection: install KS Hairdos SSE for its styles, then add a compatible Salt and Wind texture treatment. Confirm the matching versions and file overwrite guidance on the relevant pages.
1. KS Hairdos SSE: the broadest stated selection
KS Hairdos SSE is the clearest starting point if your priority is having plenty of styles to choose from. Its Nexus page lists 1,058 hairstyles in total, split into 951 for female characters and 107 for male characters. Treat those as the page’s listed figures; they have not been independently checked in-game.
This is a hairstyle pack, not a vanilla hair replacement. If you want to retain the original styles while adding options at character creation, it serves that purpose. If the broad range feels like too much to browse, Immersive KS Hairdos offers a curated alternative, but uses the KS assets.

2. Apachii Sky Hair SSE: another added-hair pack
Apachii Sky Hair SSE adds hair options and describes selecting them during character creation. Its page lists male and female hair files, so check the file section and edition instructions to install the options appropriate for your setup.
The mod page also documents using the PC console command showracemenu to edit an existing character. It cautions that changing race, sex, or preset can affect attributes; it describes purely cosmetic hair changes as safe. Follow the page’s instructions rather than treating every character-menu change as cosmetic.
3. Immersive KS Hairdos: a filtered KS selection
Immersive KS Hairdos is an ESP replacer for the original KS Hairdos assets, not a standalone hair asset pack. Its author says the selection filters out styles they considered unbelievable or immersion-breaking, and reports about 192 female and 22 male options. Female styles are loosely ordered by length.
Choose it if you like KS Hairdos but would rather browse a smaller, selected set. Install the required KS assets as directed on the page; the replacer does not take their place.

4. Comely Coiffures: replace vanilla styles
Comely Coiffures changes vanilla hairstyle records for non-beast races, using assets from KS Hairdos and Apachii to give the existing styles a more polished look while staying closer to Skyrim’s vanilla aesthetic. Unlike an added-hair pack, it changes the hair seen on characters using those vanilla records; it is not just a player-only character-creation menu expansion.
Its page provides an installation sequence: install prerequisite assets and textures first, then the replacer, allowing later files to overwrite as directed. It says the mod is compatible with other mods except other hair replacers. If an NPC appearance mod changes affected faces, the page says FaceGen data needs to be re-exported for those characters, or its optional FaceGen data installed where applicable.

5. Salt and Wind – Rough Hair: change the texture, not the styles
Salt and Wind – Rough Hair for KS Hairdos SE is for players who want KS Hairdos shapes but prefer a rougher texture finish. It reworks textures; it does not add hairstyles or increase the pack’s selection. The page calls for the corresponding KS Hairdos version for each file and reports compatibility with Immersive KS Hairdos.
6. Salt and Wind – KS Hairdos – Update: cover more KS styles
Salt and Wind – KS Hairdos – Update covers KS styles missing from other Salt and Wind retextures. Its page lists version 2.0, last updated June 27, 2025, and says it supports KS Hairdos SSE through version 1.10. The author recommends using KS Hairdos 1.7 Salt and Wind alongside it for consistent texture coverage. This is a retexture, not a new hairstyle collection.

7. Combine KS Hairdos with a Salt and Wind retexture
For a mix-and-match setup, use KS Hairdos SSE as the hairstyle source and select compatible Salt and Wind files for the texture finish. Salt and Wind – Rough Hair is one option; verify which KS file and version it matches before installing. Retextures alter the look of the hair, not the number of available styles.
How to choose and install safely
- For sheer variety: begin with KS Hairdos SSE and use its page-listed count as a guide, not a guarantee of the current in-game contents.
- For another added-hair pack: compare Apachii Sky Hair SSE and review its male and female files.
- For a shorter KS list: use Immersive KS Hairdos with its required KS assets.
- To change vanilla or NPC hairstyles: consider Comely Coiffures, avoid combining it with another hair replacer, and follow its FaceGen notes if using NPC appearance mods.
- To change texture only: use a Salt and Wind retexture with the required KS version rather than adding a second hairstyle pack.
- For every download: match files to Skyrim Special Edition and check the mod page’s current requirements, version compatibility, and overwrite instructions.
Bethesda says Skyrim Special Edition is the only Skyrim version with an in-game Creations menu. The recommendations here are PC Nexus mods for Special Edition; console and Legendary Edition instructions should not be assumed to work the same way. Bethesda’s Creations support guidance says Creations can be disabled through Load Order and the original save returned to using Select Character in the Load menu. That guidance applies to Bethesda’s Creations system, not as a universal assurance that removing arbitrary Nexus mods from an active save is safe.
