You can customize a Steam Deck without opening it: remap controls, tune performance for each game, organize your library, and personalize Desktop Mode. Community tools add deeper interface changes, while a microSD card or accessories change storage and comfort. Start with built-in, reversible settings; treat plugins and internal repairs as optional steps with extra maintenance or risk.
Steam Deck customization ranges from free settings to hands-on hardware work. The options below move from easiest to most involved, so you can stop at the level that suits your goals. SteamOS is Linux-based, supports Proton for running many Windows games, and includes a Desktop Mode for installing software; compatibility still varies by game and launcher. Valve’s SteamOS overview explains the platform.

1. Build a custom Steam Input layout
A tailored control layout can make a game feel more natural without changing the game itself. Open a game, press the Steam button, and open its controller settings or layout screen. From there, browse community layouts or create your own. Menu wording can vary by Steam client version.

Steam Input can assign actions to the face buttons, D-pad, sticks, trackpads, gyro, and rear buttons. Try the trackpads for cursor control, inventory screens, and strategy games; map rear buttons to actions such as jump or reload to keep your thumbs on the sticks; or use gyro for fine aiming. Valve’s Steamworks guidance describes Steam Input features including gyro, trackpads, and mixed input.

For more elaborate layouts, an action set can switch controls between contexts such as gameplay and a map. A mode shift temporarily changes what a button, stick, or trackpad does while another control is held. These are powerful but easy to overcomplicate: change one binding at a time and test it in-game.
Community layouts are starting points, not guarantees. Check what their bindings do before adopting one. A layout designed for keyboard and mouse may conflict with a game that changes input mode, and non-Steam games or launchers may need different mappings. If controls become confusing, return to the layout screen and apply the game’s default template, remove the conflicting action set, or try another known-good layout.
2. Tune performance and battery settings per game
Use the Quick Access performance panel while a game is running to adjust available options such as frame-rate limit, display refresh rate, TDP limit, manual GPU clock, scaling, and performance overlay. The exact controls depend on the SteamOS version and Deck model.
Start with the game’s own graphics settings. Choose a realistic frame-rate target, and match the display refresh rate to it where practical. Try a frame-rate limit before changing power settings: a steady target can be a better experience than chasing the highest possible frame rate. Use the performance overlay to observe what happens, and change one setting at a time.

Lowering a TDP limit may reduce power use, heat, and fan noise, but it can also cause stutter or lower frame rates—especially in CPU-limited games. Raising power limits can drain the battery faster and increase heat and noise; it does not guarantee more performance. Save settings as a per-game profile rather than assuming one global configuration will suit every title. Revert a change if frame pacing, temperature, noise, or battery life gets worse.
3. Add Decky Loader for community plugins
Decky Loader adds a plugin interface to the Quick Access menu. Depending on available plugins, it can provide interface styling, artwork tools, boot animations, sounds, or other shortcuts. Decky and its plugins are community-maintained, not Valve-supported; individual plugins can become incompatible or stop working after SteamOS or Steam client updates.
For most users, follow the installation instructions in the official Decky Loader repository and choose its latest stable release. The general process is:

- Press Steam, open Power, and select Switch to Desktop.
- Open a browser and download the installer from the official Decky repository.
- Run the installer from the Desktop or file manager, entering an administrator password if requested.
- Return to Gaming Mode using the desktop shortcut, then check Quick Access for the Decky plugin icon.
The project also documents this command-line installation method, but running a downloaded script directly in a shell requires trusting its source. A graphical installer is the simpler choice for most readers.

Stable SteamOS is generally a better fit than Preview or Beta channels if you rely on Decky. If its icon disappears or a plugin breaks after an update, disable recently added plugins and rerun the latest stable installer as the project recommends. Remove or disable a problem plugin before considering a full Decky removal; uninstalling a plugin may not delete files or settings it created elsewhere.
4. Restyle Gaming Mode and your library
Plugins can change how Gaming Mode looks, while artwork tools can replace missing or mismatched library images. Depending on what is currently available, you might use a CSS theme for interface styling, an artwork tool for game capsules and logos, or separate plugins for boot animations and sounds. Plugin names and availability change, so treat these as categories rather than guaranteed features.
Keep readability in mind: a theme with weak contrast can make menus harder to use. A theme can also look broken after a Steam client update. If that happens, disable the theme and return to the default appearance. Large custom boot animations may make startup feel slower. For a low-maintenance improvement, organize games into library categories and add artwork to non-Steam entries without installing a large bundle of plugins.

Desktop Mode is a KDE/Linux desktop built into the Deck; you do not need a dock, keyboard, or mouse to use it, though peripherals can make text entry and file management easier. Press Steam → Power → Switch to Desktop. In system settings, change the wallpaper and color scheme, adjust panels, add widgets, or create shortcuts. You can also use trusted software sources to install desktop applications and add suitable apps to Steam for launching from Gaming Mode.

Desktop Mode is useful for organizing files, configuring applications, and setting up non-Steam software, but an app working on the desktop does not guarantee it will launch cleanly in Gaming Mode. SteamOS protects parts of the system, and system-level changes or random scripts can make updates and troubleshooting more difficult. Stick to ordinary desktop settings and trusted software sources unless you understand the maintenance involved. Return to Gaming Mode with the desktop shortcut or Steam’s power menu.

MicroSD: the simple option
A microSD card adds storage without opening the Deck. Insert it in the card slot and format it through SteamOS if prompted, or use the storage interface; then choose it when installing or moving games. Buy from a reputable seller, since counterfeit cards can report more capacity than they actually have. A card is removable and convenient, but do not assume its speed matches the internal SSD.
Internal SSD: an advanced repair
Replacing the internal drive requires opening the device and reinstalling or recovering SteamOS. The LCD model uses a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD; the OLED has a separate, model-specific procedure. Do not treat the two repair guides as interchangeable. Before opening the Deck, back up important data, remove the microSD card, discharge the battery below 25%, and use BIOS battery-storage mode as Valve recommends for internal repairs. Use an appropriate device-specific guide and observe ESD precautions.

Initial setup may not immediately recognize the buttons, sticks, and touchpads; according to iFixit’s LCD SSD guide, input can return after updates and a restart. If you are not comfortable with disassembly and recovery, a microSD card is the safer storage expansion. Consult Valve’s Steam Deck recovery resources before starting.

7. Change the physical setup with accessories
A case, grip, skin, screen protector, or thumbstick cap changes protection, comfort, or appearance without opening the Deck. A stand, dock or USB-C hub, keyboard, mouse, monitor, or headset can make a docked setup more useful. Check that accessories fit your LCD or OLED model, leave the USB-C port accessible, and work with your existing case and dock. Grips should not obstruct rear buttons; a hub intended for video output and charging should support the connections you need.
Shell swaps, stick replacement, cooling changes, and other internal modifications are repair projects, not casual cosmetic upgrades. They can involve fragile clips, cables, screws, and battery hazards. Use a model-specific guide and weigh the risk against the problem you are trying to solve. Opening the Deck is not necessary for ordinary personalization.
Choose a path that fits your goal
- New owner: start with a controller layout, a per-game performance profile, and library organization.
- Better aiming or strategy controls: try gyro, trackpads, and rear-button bindings before buying accessories.
- More personal visuals: begin with artwork; add Decky themes or animations only if you are comfortable maintaining community plugins.
- More game storage: try a microSD card before considering an SSD replacement.
- Docked play or Desktop Mode: use a compatible dock or hub with the peripherals you actually need.
- Lowest maintenance: stay with SteamOS settings and external accessories; skip plugins and internal modifications.
Back up before experimenting
Steam Cloud is game-dependent, so do not assume it covers every save, setting, or non-Steam game. Confirm Cloud is enabled for supported games, back up important non-Steam saves separately, and note your existing controller and performance settings before changing them. Before internal work, remove the microSD card and make sure you can access SteamOS recovery instructions. These small precautions make it easier to undo a change or recover from a failed one.
