DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED means the game lost access to its graphics device; it usually does not mean the graphics card was physically unplugged. A driver reset, GPU timeout, game or runtime fault, or unstable hardware can cause it. Start by checking whether it happens in one game or across several, then choose the relevant fixes below rather than changing registry settings at random.

Before troubleshooting, note your GPU model and driver version, save your work, and think about what changed just before the crashes: a driver or Windows update, game patch, graphics setting, overclock, XMP/EXPO profile, or new overlay. If you use a GPU or CPU overclock or undervolt, return it to stock for testing.

What DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED means

Direct3D reports DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED when the graphics device the application was using is no longer available to it. Windows may have reset the graphics stack after the GPU or driver stopped responding. The message is a symptom, not a diagnosis: a driver, game, Direct3D runtime, or hardware problem may be involved. Microsoft explains device removal and recovery in its DXGI overview and PIX TDR debugging guide.

Windows Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR) attempts to recover when the GPU does not respond. The default timeout is two seconds, but that does not mean every game crash is caused by exceeding a simple timer: workload, driver behavior, software faults, and hardware stability can all be factors. Related clues include DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG, DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_RESET, a message that the display driver recovered, or Event Viewer entries such as LiveKernelEvent 141 and vendor display-driver references. A black screen or flicker can accompany recovery, but neither proves that TDR caused it. See Microsoft’s TDR documentation and VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED reference.

First determine whether it is one game or the whole PC

  • One game only: start with that game’s files, shader cache, renderer, graphics options, and overlays. A recent game patch or switch to DirectX 12 may matter.
  • Several demanding games: prioritize driver version and installation, stock hardware settings, temperature, power delivery, and RAM stability.
  • Desktop, browser video, or ordinary use too: treat it as a broader driver or hardware issue; check logs and hardware rather than repeatedly reinstalling a game.
  • Started just after a driver update: try rolling the driver back before installing another version.
  • Started just after a Windows update: check Update history and test the display driver; avoid drastic system changes until you have isolated the timing.

1. Reset the graphics driver and restart

Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. The display may briefly flicker or go black as Windows resets the graphics driver. Save work first if possible, then restart the PC and try the game again. Microsoft lists this shortcut among its screen-flicker troubleshooting steps.

This can recover a temporarily stuck display driver or make a one-off black screen responsive again. If the error keeps returning, the shortcut is only a temporary recovery; continue with driver and stability checks.

2. Update or roll back the graphics driver

Identify the graphics device with Win + X → Device Manager → Display adapters, or press Win + R, enter dxdiag, and check the Display tab. A laptop may use both integrated and discrete graphics. For laptops, the computer maker’s driver may be the better test if a generic vendor driver behaves poorly.

Choose the driver action based on timing, not just the word “latest.” If the problem predates the current driver or the installed version is old, test a suitable newer driver. If crashes began immediately after an update, try a rollback. Change one version at a time and note which one you tested.

To roll back, use Win + X → Device Manager → Display adapters → right-click your GPU → Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver. The button may be unavailable if Windows has no previous driver saved. Microsoft documents display-driver update, rollback, and uninstall options in its graphics-device troubleshooting guide; Intel also describes rollback in its driver rollback guidance.

3. Clean-reinstall the graphics driver

Try a clean installation if a normal update or rollback does not help and the problem plausibly involves conflicting or damaged driver components. Download the correct replacement driver before removing the existing one. Then use the vendor’s clean-install option if available, restart, and test with default driver settings.

  1. Download the appropriate GPU driver from the GPU or computer manufacturer’s official support page.
  2. If Windows repeatedly installs a different driver during the process, temporarily disconnect from the internet.
  3. Use the driver’s clean-install option, if offered. AMD describes its option in the Radeon Software installation guidance; Intel describes its clean-install option in its graphics driver installation instructions.
  4. Restart and test the game before restoring custom driver profiles.

For difficult removal cases, Intel also discusses Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in its driver guidance. DDU is a third-party utility, not a Microsoft tool; its publisher provides it at wagnardsoft.com. Safe Mode and manual removal are more advanced than a standard driver update, so do not use them unless a normal installation has failed. A clean reinstall cannot fix overheating, unstable RAM, inadequate power, or a defective component.

4. Return hardware settings to stock and check heat and power

Temporarily remove tuning from every part that could affect stability: GPU core or memory overclock, undervolt, CPU overclock or motherboard enhancement, XMP/EXPO memory profile, aggressive power limits, and custom fan curve. Change one setting at a time if you need to identify the cause; for an initial stability test, defaults provide the clearest baseline.

Microsoft lists overclocking, incorrect memory configuration, inadequate cooling, insufficient power, and defective hardware among possible causes of GPU timeout failures in its VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED documentation.

  • Watch GPU temperature and hotspot temperature, if reported, and CPU temperature during a demanding scene.
  • Check that fans operate, airflow is not blocked, and dust is not restricting cooling.
  • With the PC powered off, check that GPU power connectors are fully seated. If you are not comfortable checking components, ask a qualified technician.
  • Consider whether the crash occurs only in high-power scenes; do not assume a PSU is adequate solely because the PC starts normally.
  • If disabling XMP/EXPO or an undervolt makes the game stable, that configuration was not stable on this system under that workload.

Do not respond by increasing voltage, raising power limits, or extending the TDR timeout as a first-line fix; those changes can add heat or conceal an underlying fault.

5. Reduce GPU load and isolate overlays or graphics features

For a game-specific crash, temporarily use a conservative graphics profile. Lower resolution or render scale, shadows, effects, reflections, or view distance; reduce ray tracing or path tracing; and disable frame generation or HDR for a test. If VRAM use is near capacity, lower texture quality. Cap the frame rate below the display’s maximum and try borderless windowed mode if the game supports it.

If the game offers both DirectX 11 and DirectX 12, test the other renderer. A game that works only on DirectX 11 may have a title-, driver-, or renderer-specific problem; this workaround does not repair Windows or prove the GPU is healthy.

Turn off overlays and capture or monitoring tools for one test: Discord, Steam, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, recording software, RGB utilities, and performance monitors. Microsoft’s TDR documentation notes intensive workloads and background software among potential contributors to timeouts. If disabling an overlay changes the result, re-enable tools one at a time to find the conflict; overlays are not inherently defective.

  • If lower settings or an FPS cap help, investigate workload, VRAM pressure, heat, power, and the game-driver interaction.
  • If only one renderer fails, report that distinction to the game’s developer and use the working renderer if it is an acceptable workaround.
  • If only one overlay’s removal helps, leave it off or check for an update to that tool.

6. Clear shader caches and verify the game files

A stale or damaged shader cache or game asset can affect one title without indicating a general GPU fault. In Windows, try Settings → System → Storage → Temporary files → DirectX Shader Cache → Remove files. The available categories can differ by Windows version; restart after clearing it. In AMD Radeon Software, use the current shader-cache reset control if available, since labels and locations can change between releases.

For NVIDIA, cache controls and storage locations can vary by driver and Windows version; avoid treating a folder path found online as universal. Close games and GPU-accelerated applications before any manual cache cleanup. Clearing caches can require shaders to be compiled again, so expect potentially longer first loads or temporary stutter.

Launcher labels may change; use the equivalent Verify, Repair, or Scan option if the path differs. Intel’s Arc release notes dated July 7, 2026, document a game-crash mitigation involving clearing cached shader files, an example of a title- and driver-specific case rather than a universal fix: Intel Arc driver release notes.

7. Check Windows logs, repair system files, and test for hardware faults

Use the crash pattern and logs

Open Win + X → Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System and check entries at the crash time. Look for display-driver recovery, nvlddmkm, amdwddmg, Intel display-driver events, LiveKernelEvent, WHEA hardware errors, Kernel-Power events, or disk and filesystem errors. One event name alone does not identify a failed part; the timing and whether other games or desktop tasks fail matter. Microsoft’s stop-code troubleshooting and TDR documentation provide background on logs and timeout diagnosis.

Repair Windows system files

Open Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  2. sfc /scannow

Restart after both complete. These tools repair Windows component and system-file problems; they do not repair a failing GPU or a corrupted game installation.

Escalate testing if the fault is system-wide

With tuning disabled, test another demanding game or a controlled GPU load. If memory instability is suspected, test with the memory profile disabled and consider Windows Memory Diagnostic or a reputable bootable memory test. Stop stress testing if you see artifacts, unusual heat, or repeated black screens.

  • Artifacts before Windows loads, crashes across several games at stock settings, or display-driver resets during ordinary use make a hardware or system-wide fault more plausible.
  • Persistent WHEA errors, repeated LiveKernelEvents, or abnormal temperatures warrant investigation of the GPU, RAM, cooling, PSU, and motherboard.
  • If available, a known-good PSU, GPU, or RAM kit can help isolate the failing component; component swaps are best handled by someone comfortable with PC hardware.

Seek qualified repair support if the problem persists outside one game, especially when artifacts or repeated resets continue at stock settings. Do not keep stress-testing a system that shows physical warning signs.

Do not use TDR registry edits as a routine fix

Some guides recommend changing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlGraphicsDrivers values such as TdrDelay or disabling TDR. These settings alter a Windows recovery mechanism; extending the timeout can leave a game frozen longer, and disabling recovery can turn an application failure into a full system hang or reboot. Neither change repairs corrupted drivers, defective hardware, excess heat, or invalid GPU work. Microsoft describes TDR registry keys for testing and driver-development scenarios, not as a general consumer repair.
