If Xbox Game Bar does nothing when you press Win + G, opens blank, or will not record, first check whether the problem affects the overlay, recording, audio, or just one game. Test Win + G on the desktop before changing settings; then follow the fix that matches your symptom. These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, though Settings labels and locations vary by release.
Quick symptom guide
| What happens | Likely area to check | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Win + G does nothing anywhere | Game Bar is disabled, the shortcut is not reaching it, or the app is damaged | Fixes 1–3 |
| The overlay opens blank, incomplete, or closes | App state, layout, display scaling, or an overlay conflict | Fixes 3 and 6 |
| The overlay opens but recording fails | Capture settings, storage, graphics driver, or game compatibility | Fix 6 |
| Recording works but the file seems missing | Save location or capture settings | Fix 6 |
| Only one game fails | Fullscreen renderer, anti-cheat restrictions, or another overlay | Fix 6 |
| Xbox app and Game Bar both fail | Store, account, Gaming Services, or related services | Fixes 2, 4, and 5 |
1. Enable Xbox Game Bar and test the shortcuts
Press Win + I, search Settings for Xbox Game Bar, and open the setting that allows Game Bar to open and record game clips. Turn it on if it is off. Settings paths and wording differ between Windows releases, so search is often quicker than following an older menu path.
Test Win + G on the desktop. If the shortcut does nothing, press Win + R, enter xboxgamebar:, and press Enter. This URI is an additional diagnostic suggested in Microsoft Q&A, not a guaranteed repair: if it opens Game Bar, the keyboard shortcut or its setting may be the issue; if it does not, continue with app repair and updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUseful default shortcuts include:
- Win + G: open Game Bar.
- Win + Alt + R: start or stop a recording.
- Win + Alt + M: toggle the microphone during recording.
- Win + Alt + Print Screen: take a screenshot.
The controller option for opening Game Bar is separate from the keyboard shortcut. If you use a controller, search Settings for the controller-related Game Bar option and check it separately. Microsoft documents the shortcuts and capture controls in its Xbox Game Bar recording instructions; the URI test comes from community troubleshooting on Microsoft Q&A.

2. Restart Windows and update Windows, Store, and Xbox apps
A full restart can finish a pending Windows or app update and clear a temporary stuck state. Restart the PC—not just sign out—then:
- Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install available updates.
- Open Microsoft Store > Library and select Get updates.
- Install updates for Xbox and Xbox Game Bar if they are listed, then restart once more if prompted.
Microsoft’s Store app troubleshooting guidance includes updating Windows and Store apps before repairing or reinstalling an app. Retest Win + G and a short recording after the updates.
If Microsoft Store or Game Bar is missing on a work or school PC, an administrator may have restricted Store or gaming features. A local account, account-sign-in issue, regional availability, or device compatibility can also affect what appears in Store. See Microsoft’s guidance on a missing Microsoft Store app before assuming the package is broken.

3. Repair Xbox Game Bar, then reset it if needed
This is the next step if Game Bar opens and closes, displays a blank interface, or stopped working after an update. In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, search for Xbox Game Bar or Game Bar, open its menu, and choose Advanced options. Select Repair first. Retest; if the problem remains, return to the same page and select Reset.

On some newer Windows 11 builds the app may be listed under Settings > System > System components. On Windows 10, look under Settings > Apps (often Apps & features) for Game Bar and its advanced options. If you cannot find it, search Settings for the app name.
- Repair attempts to fix the installation while preserving more of its app data.
- Reset restores the app to a default state and may clear its local preferences or layout.
Microsoft’s Windows app repair guidance recommends trying Repair before Reset. After either action, test Win + G, then start and stop a short clip with Win + Alt + R.
4. Refresh Microsoft Store and reinstall Game Bar
Try this when Game Bar is missing, cannot update, crashes repeatedly, or still fails after Repair and Reset.
- Press Win + R, type
wsreset.exe, and press Enter. - A blank command window may appear. Wait for it to close and Microsoft Store to open; this normally takes about 10 seconds.
- In Store, open Library > Get updates and try updating Game Bar.
- If an Install button is available, search Store for Xbox Game Bar or Game Bar, install it, and restart Windows.
wsreset.exe clears the Microsoft Store cache; it does not repair graphics drivers or Windows itself. Microsoft’s instructions for finding or installing Store apps cover the cache reset and availability checks. If the app is not listed, check Store sign-in, device restrictions, and availability for your installation rather than trying a package-removal command immediately.

Avoid jumping to PowerShell removal commands or registry edits. Community answers may suggest them, but package names and behavior can vary across Windows builds, and they are more disruptive than the steps above.
5. Restart Gaming Services and Xbox-related services
This is most relevant if Game Bar hangs, clips will not save, the Xbox app is also failing, or Xbox apps are stuck signing in. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. If Windows requests administrator approval, approve it. Look for these services, when present:
- Gaming Services
- Xbox Live Auth Manager
- Xbox Live Game Save
- Xbox Live Networking Service
Right-click a relevant service and choose Restart; if Restart is unavailable, choose Start. Do not change startup types arbitrarily. A service may be absent, disabled by policy, or damaged, and restarting it will not fix a broken app package or account issue. These service steps are community troubleshooting suggestions on Microsoft Q&A, not a universal Microsoft repair procedure.
6. Check capture settings, drivers, fullscreen mode, and other overlays
If Game Bar opens but recording, audio, or one game’s overlay does not work, focus on capture and compatibility rather than reinstalling Windows.

Check capture settings and the saved file
Open Game Bar with Win + G, select the Settings gear, and inspect Capturing. Confirm whether system audio is included and whether the microphone should be enabled. Use Win + Alt + M to toggle microphone capture. By default, recordings are MP4 files and screenshots are PNG files in VideosCaptures. If a recording shortcut appears to work but you cannot find the clip, check that folder and any changed capture location before recording again. See Microsoft’s capture and shortcut instructions.
Check storage and graphics drivers
Make sure the drive used for captures has free space. Update a graphics driver if recording reports a hardware limitation, the overlay renders incorrectly, or the problem began after a GPU or driver change. Check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates for an offered driver, or use the official support page for your PC or graphics-card manufacturer. A driver update is not a universal fix for every Game Bar failure.
Try windowed or borderless mode
If only one game is affected, switch it from exclusive fullscreen to Windowed or Borderless Windowed and test again. Microsoft documents that Game Bar may not appear over Vulkan or OpenGL games running in exclusive fullscreen mode. Behavior can still depend on the game, renderer, driver, and fullscreen implementation; see the Game Bar known issues.
Isolate competing overlays
Temporarily close Discord Overlay, NVIDIA or AMD overlay features, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server, and other recorders or performance overlays, then test again. If Game Bar works, re-enable them one at a time to identify a conflict. Third-party overlay conflicts are a plausible cause reported in Microsoft Q&A community troubleshooting, not a guaranteed diagnosis. Anti-cheat restrictions can also affect overlays in particular games.

A “hardware requirements not met” message can depend on the active graphics adapter, driver, game, or Windows installation. Update the relevant driver and test windowed mode first; do not assume a registry edit will resolve it.

Use broader Windows repair only after app, Store, service, and capture checks. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands in order:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Let each command finish, then restart Windows. DISM and System File Checker address broader Windows component or system-file problems; they are not Game Bar-specific fixes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If Game Bar still fails, temporarily disable third-party overlays and startup utilities. Then test with a new Windows user profile. If Game Bar works in the new profile, the original profile’s app data or settings may be damaged; if it fails for every profile, a system-wide package, driver, policy, or Windows issue is more likely. Profile isolation is also suggested in Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting.
Windows recovery is a last resort, not a routine Game Bar fix. Back up important files before using recovery options. Depending on the Windows build, Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update may be available for repairing Windows while preserving files. Consider Reset this PC only if broader Windows corruption is suspected and less disruptive steps have failed.
Choose the next step
- No overlay anywhere: check enablement and shortcuts, restart and update, then Repair or Reset Game Bar.
- Overlay works but recording does not: check Capturing settings, free storage, drivers, and game display mode.
- Xbox app and Game Bar both fail: check Store updates and account access, then inspect Gaming Services and Xbox services.
- Only one game fails: try borderless/windowed mode and temporarily disable other overlays.
- Only one Windows account fails: test a new profile before pursuing system-wide recovery.
After each repair, test the same way: press Win + G, make a short recording with Win + Alt + R, stop it with the same shortcut, and check VideosCaptures.
