For Android multiplayer without mobile data or internet, choose a game with a genuine local mode: shared-screen play, Bluetooth, or a local Wi-Fi network. The eight picks below cover all three, but they do not all connect the same way. A phone hotspot may create a local network without internet, though some games or Android devices may not discover peers reliably. Install and launch games before you travel; first-run downloads, authentication, ads, and optional online features can still need internet.

Compare the eight games by connection type

Game Best for Devices and local method Player count Internet during local play
BombSquad Large, chaotic parties One screen with controllers or companion phones; local network Up to eight, according to its Google Play listing Local play is advertised; online-connected features may differ
Minecraft Open-ended building and survival One device per player; local-area network Not stated in the cited source; do not assume a universal limit Local LAN play is described by Droid Gamers
Terraria 2D exploration and progression One device per player; local Wi-Fi/LAN Not stated in the cited current source Local play is described by Droid Gamers
BADLAND Shared-screen platforming One phone or tablet Up to four is reported by PCNMobile; verify the current in-game mode Same-device play does not need a network
Spaceteam Cooperative shouting and coordination Multiple nearby phones or tablets; local multiplayer Not stated in the official FAQ Designed as local multiplayer; see the official FAQ
DUAL! Quick two-player duels Two phones; reported Bluetooth or local Wi-Fi Two Local connection is described by GamesCodify
Riptide GP: Renegade Arcade water racing Multiple devices; local network play is reported Up to eight is reported by PCNMobile; confirm mode availability in your current build Local mode is reported; do not confuse it with online races
2 Player Games: The Challenge Short mini-games on one phone One shared screen Two No network is needed for the core same-device format, though confirm the current listing

“Offline multiplayer” here means players can share a match without an external internet connection. It does not guarantee that every feature works offline or that the game will never need internet for installation, updates, sign-in, or ads. Same-device play is the safest option when connectivity is uncertain; LAN and Bluetooth discovery can vary by game and device.

Best Android offline multiplayer games

1. BombSquad: best for a large party

BombSquad turns a group into a succession of fast, noisy contests, including capture-the-flag and hockey. Its Google Play description advertises up to eight-player local/networked play. Players can use touch controls, compatible gamepads, or phones and tablets running the separate BombSquad Remote app as controllers. On Android TV, the listing says a compatible gamepad or Remote app is needed.

  • Best fit: Groups who want short, competitive rounds rather than a long campaign.
  • Setup: Use one display with controllers or Remote devices, or connect devices on a local network.
  • Trade-off: Explosions and frantic action can be overwhelming for players seeking calm co-op. The Play listing marks it as containing ads and in-app purchases, and gives it a Teen rating.

The advertised eight-player maximum is not a promise that eight people will be comfortable crowding around one phone. A tablet, TV, or multiple controllers can make group play more practical. The listing’s local/networked wording also does not establish that online-connected features work without internet. See BombSquad on Google Play.

8Bitdo Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller for Windows PC and Android, with 1000 Hz Polling Rate, Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers, and Remappable L4/R4 Bumpers (Green)
  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

2. Minecraft: best for a long-running sandbox

Android’s Bedrock edition is a strong choice when the group wants to build, explore, survive, or invent its own challenges over several sessions. Local multiplayer over a LAN is identified in Droid Gamers’ local-play overview. The natural setup is one compatible device and copy per player, with everyone on the same local network.

  • Best fit: Players who want shared-world progression, not an instant five-minute match.
  • Setup: Ensure devices use compatible versions and are on the same network; a hotspot may work as the local network even without internet, but discovery is not guaranteed.
  • Trade-off: Edition, version, account and parental-control settings can complicate joining. Realms, public servers, and other online services are separate from local LAN play.

Price and player limit vary or are not established by the cited source, so check the live Play listing for your country and the current edition rather than relying on an old price or maximum. Google Play’s Games category is a starting point for the current Android listing.

3. Terraria: best for a 2D cooperative adventure

Terraria pairs exploration and crafting with combat, building, bosses, and character progression. Compared with Minecraft, its 2D presentation and progression give a co-op group a more structured adventure to work through. Droid Gamers describes local Wi-Fi/LAN play.

  • Best fit: Friends who want to explore and advance together over longer sessions.
  • Setup: Install the same current mobile edition on each device, use the same local network, and check for version compatibility.
  • Trade-off: Inventory management and touch controls can be fiddly on small screens; it has a learning curve and is less immediate than a party game.

Current player limits and mobile price are not established by the cited sources; do not treat older comparison figures as a universal guarantee. Check the live listing and in-game multiplayer options before organizing a group.

4. BADLAND: best shared-screen platformer

BADLAND is a physics-driven side-scrolling platformer that suits brief sessions and gives a one-device group an option distinct from mini-game collections. Android Authority includes it in its Android local multiplayer roundup. Other coverage reports shared-screen play for up to four, but the exact mode and limit should be checked in the current Android version.

  • Best fit: Players sharing a phone or, more comfortably, a tablet.
  • Setup: Use the shared-screen mode; compatible external controllers may help, depending on device and version.
  • Trade-off: Crowded controls and platforming difficulty can frustrate a group on a small display.

Confirm how the current version handles simultaneous play and controls before relying on it for a particular group size. It is also available as a single-player game, but that alone is not what makes it a multiplayer pick.

5. Spaceteam: best for cooperative communication

Spaceteam gives each player a role in keeping a spaceship operating: players call out instructions and act on controls appearing on their devices. The official FAQ describes it as local multiplayer, says there is no automatic matchmaking, and explains that the normal local game is not playable alone. Nearby players need to hear one another.

  • Best fit: A group that enjoys cooperation, rapid communication, and comic confusion.
  • Setup: Each player needs a compatible phone or tablet. Install and launch before the gathering to avoid spending the first minutes troubleshooting.
  • Trade-off: It is intentionally loud, making it a poor choice for a library, quiet train carriage, or other setting where talking is unwelcome.

The official materials establish local play, but the cited FAQ does not provide a player maximum or settle every connection detail for the current Android build. Check the current in-game instructions for the available connection method. Visit the official Spaceteam site.

6. DUAL!: best for two phones and a quick duel

DUAL! is designed around two people facing one another, with each phone acting as a playfield. Coverage describes local play over Bluetooth or local Wi-Fi, with a minimalist, phone-to-phone feel. Its niche is immediate one-on-one competition rather than a family group or shared world.

  • Best fit: Two players with separate devices who want a short competitive session.
  • Setup: Both players need a phone and the same current version; Bluetooth or network discovery permissions may affect pairing.
  • Trade-off: It is not a group game, and current free-versus-paid mode details are not established by the cited sources.

The reported connection options come from GamesCodify; check the current app listing and in-game menu to confirm availability and pricing before depending on a specific mode.

7. Riptide GP: Renegade: best local racing pick

This arcade water racer adds a genre missing from the sandbox and party options. Android Authority identifies it as a local multiplayer racing recommendation, while Android Central notes controller support in its Android game coverage. Local network races are reported in comparisons, but check that the current Android build in your region exposes the mode before buying for a group.

  • Best fit: Players who want races and competitive rounds, especially with gamepads.
  • Setup: Use compatible devices on a local network; a controller can make steering more comfortable.
  • Trade-off: It is more demanding than simple 2D games, and precise racing may be less welcoming to newcomers. The reported eight-player maximum comes from PCNMobile, not a verified universal current limit.

8. 2 Player Games: The Challenge: best for quick play on one phone

This collection brings short arcade contests such as air hockey, ping-pong, and tic-tac-toe to a shared screen. Android Authority describes it as a simple local multiplayer collection. It is an easy fallback for a waiting room or trip when nobody wants to set up a lobby.

  • Best fit: Two people sharing one device for short rounds.
  • Setup: Choose a mini-game and share the screen; the core format should not need a network, but verify the current version before travel.
  • Trade-off: It is a bundle of lightweight diversions, not a deep game with long-term progression. Current developer, ads, and in-app purchase details are not established by the cited coverage.

Choose by group, device count, and setting

  • Only one phone: Try 2 Player Games for quick rounds or BADLAND for platforming. BombSquad can also use one display with controllers or companion phones.
  • Two players, two phones: DUAL! is the focused duel option; Terraria is better for a longer cooperative journey.
  • Large group: BombSquad is the clearest party pick, while Spaceteam suits a group that prefers cooperative shouting to competition.
  • Long-form co-op: Minecraft offers open-ended world play; Terraria supplies more structured exploration and progression.
  • Racing: Riptide GP: Renegade is the genre-specific choice, subject to confirming local mode in the current build.
  • Children or family play: BADLAND and simple mini-games are easier to approach; Minecraft can suit family play with age-appropriate settings and worlds. Terraria includes fantasy combat, and BombSquad’s Play rating is Teen.
  • Quiet travel: Prefer a shared-screen game or a two-player option that does not depend on loud communication. Spaceteam is built around players hearing one another.

Set up local multiplayer without internet

Use the connection method the game actually names. Same-device play needs no peer network. LAN play means devices communicate over the same local network; a router or hotspot may provide that network without internet, but hotspot discovery is not universal. Bluetooth is a separate device-to-device option and should only be assumed when the game explicitly offers it.

  1. Prepare before leaving: Install the game on every device, update to compatible versions, and launch once while online if downloads, authentication, or license checks may be required.
  2. Choose the local mode: Look for labels such as “local,” “LAN,” “Wi-Fi,” or “Bluetooth.” A generic multiplayer button may lead to online matchmaking instead.
  3. Connect devices when needed: For LAN, put all players on the same Wi-Fi network or try a hotspot. For Bluetooth, follow the game’s pairing or discovery prompts. For same-device play, connect controllers first if the game requires them.
  4. Test without outside connectivity: Once installation and setup are complete, turn off mobile data and try a local match. This checks the session, not whether first-run features, ads, or optional services can work offline.
  5. Keep the session practical: Charge devices, keep them close, and consider screen size, controller availability, and whether the setting allows voice communication.

Troubleshoot failed local connections

Players cannot see the host

  • Check that all devices are on the same Wi-Fi network and that the hotspot remains active.
  • Toggle Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, then restart the game on each device.
  • Temporarily disable VPNs and check Android permissions for nearby devices, Bluetooth, or network discovery where applicable.
  • Confirm everyone has a compatible game version. If a hotspot fails, try a conventional Wi-Fi router.

The lobby appears, but joining fails

  • Restart the host session and have the host create a fresh lobby.
  • Check for network isolation, mixed cellular/Wi-Fi connections, edition or region mismatches, parental controls, and battery restrictions.
  • Do not assume a local match can work if the title’s mode uses online servers; cross-platform support is not proof of offline play.

A game asks for internet

Some games need internet for first-run downloads, authentication, updates, ads, or optional online features even when a local match itself is possible. Complete setup in advance and test the specific local mode with mobile data off; airplane mode is not a universal test because it can disable the very Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection a game uses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to check before relying on a game

  • Confirm the current Android listing and in-game menu for local connection method, player count, price, ads, and purchases; these details can change and prices vary by country.
  • Distinguish a technical maximum from a comfortable group size. Eight players on the listing does not mean eight people can easily share a small phone screen.
  • Check controller support on the actual device and game mode. A controller can help with BombSquad or racing, but it does not automatically provide separate controls for every player.
  • Install before a trip and test with the intended devices and network; old guides may describe modes that have changed.
