Its direct official game, the mobile management title Breaking Bad: Criminal Elements, launched in 2019 and was reported shut down in 2020. For a game you can play today, the strongest alternatives depend on what you want from the show: a tense criminal crew, a drug-trade business, or a crime story. These eight picks are not all equally close, and most are not licensed or connected to the series.
What happened to the official Breaking Bad game?
FTX Games launched Breaking Bad: Criminal Elements for mobile in 2019, in collaboration with Sony Pictures Consumer Products; Plamee developed it. Its management-focused premise let players work alongside characters including Mike Ehrmantraut, Saul Goodman, and Gustavo Fring. License Global reported the launch.
In an August 2022 report, GameSpot said the game had shut down in 2020 after roughly a year. The same report describes creator Vince Gilligan’s unsuccessful attempts to develop game concepts, including a PlayStation VR experience. Gilligan said, “You gotta make it great. Execution is everything,” and cautioned fans not to hold their breath for an adaptation. GameSpot’s report and Tom’s Guide’s August 2022 coverage discuss the shelved concepts. No later adaptation is identified in these sources, so this is not a claim about future plans.
Which games capture the Breaking Bad appeal?
The games below match different parts of the series. Payday 2 offers a criminal crew and a meth-cooking mission; Cartel Tycoon focuses on the logistics of running a drug business; and Grand Theft Auto V combines crime storytelling with a partial drug-enterprise overlap. None reproduces the show’s particular character drama.

The best games for Breaking Bad fans
1. Grand Theft Auto V — best for open-world crime
Grand Theft Auto V is the broadest fit if what you want is a crime-filled setting and room to move between story missions and open-world activity. Gaming.net points to drug-related story material and a meth business in GTA Online as the overlap with Breaking Bad. That makes it a partial match for the show’s illicit-business side, not an adaptation or a close narrative equivalent. Gaming.net’s comparison outlines the connection.
2. Payday 2 — best for a meth-cooking crew mission
Payday 2 is the most direct pick for players seeking a criminal crew under pressure: Gaming.net highlights its cooperative “Cook Off” scenario, in which players cook meth while dealing with threats. The game is a co-op shooter, so its teamwork and mission tension differ sharply from the character-driven drama of Breaking Bad. Gaming.net covers the mission.
3. Cartel Tycoon — best for running the operation
Cartel Tycoon is the strongest match here for the operational side of the show: building production and smuggling chains while managing lieutenants, rival gangs, authorities, and public opinion. Steam describes it as a survival business simulation inspired by the narcotics trade of the 1980s and 1990s and lists a story mode. Its period and focus are different from Breaking Bad, but the business-management challenge is closely aligned with the appeal of watching an illicit enterprise grow. The official site lists PC and console storefronts; check the storefront for the platform and edition you want. Steam’s listing provides the PC product details.
4. Empire of Sin — best for organized-crime strategy
Empire of Sin puts you in the criminal underworld of 1920s Prohibition-era Chicago. Paradox describes it as a strategy game, while Gaming.net emphasizes business management and gang conflict. It suits players interested in building and defending a criminal operation, but its historical setting and turn-based strategy structure are far removed from Walter White’s contemporary story. See the Paradox game page and Gaming.net’s comparison.

- Let the games begin! Own the genre-defining Saw horror series in all its grisly glory. Five-disc set includes: Saw (2004), Saw II (2005), Saw III (2006), Saw IV (2007), Saw V (2008), Saw VI (2009), Saw: The Final Chapter (2010) and Saw 3D: The Final Chapter (2010).
- Genre: Horror
5. Scarface: The World Is Yours — best for an older drug-empire story
Scarface: The World Is Yours follows a protagonist building and maintaining a drug empire in an open-world criminal setting, the connection Gaming.net draws to Breaking Bad. It is an older game, and current availability is not established here; check the relevant platform’s store and compatibility details before planning to play it. This recommendation is for the empire-building premise, not because the game is a current or direct tie-in. Gaming.net’s list explains the thematic comparison.
6. Narcos: Rise of the Cartels — best for a cartel conflict with two sides
Narcos: Rise of the Cartels is based on Netflix’s Narcos, not Breaking Bad. The game’s Steam Community announcement describes a turn-based tactical game that lets players support the Medellín cartel or oppose it as DEA agents. It offers a cartel-and-law-enforcement perspective, but is a distinct licensed adaptation of another series. Check the store for your platform and current availability. The Steam Community announcement describes its premise.
7. Crystal Hustle — best for a Jesse Pinkman fan game
Crystal Hustle is an unofficial fan project, not an authorized Breaking Bad release. Its creator describes a downloadable Windows and Linux game starring Jesse Pinkman, focused on deliveries and evading trouble. Because it is a fan-made project, check the creator’s page for whether the download remains available and for current system details. The creator’s itch.io page describes the game.
8. Breaking Bad: Criminal Elements — best as a historical official tie-in
Breaking Bad: Criminal Elements is the only direct series tie-in in this list, but it should be treated as a historical release rather than a current recommendation: GameSpot reported that it shut down in 2020. Its 2019 launch announcement described a mobile management game featuring series characters. The launch and shutdown are documented separately by License Global and GameSpot. Do not assume it can still be downloaded or played.

How to choose one
- For the crew and the lab: choose Payday 2 for its cooperative “Cook Off” scenario.
- For the business mechanics: choose Cartel Tycoon for production, smuggling, and rival-management systems.
- For an open-world crime story: choose Grand Theft Auto V; its connection is broader and less focused on the drug trade.
- For a strategy game about criminal power: choose Empire of Sin, keeping its Prohibition-era setting in mind.
- For the closest direct connection: Criminal Elements was the official mobile tie-in, but it was reported shut down; Crystal Hustle is an unofficial fan game, not a substitute official release.
Availability is especially uncertain for the older titles and the fan project. Confirm regional storefront listings, supported platforms, and editions before buying or downloading; the sources cited here do not establish current prices or stock.
