If Gran Turismo 7 multiplayer is lagging on PS5, first check whether GT7’s online service or PlayStation Network is having trouble. If both appear available, test a wired connection, then work through your Wi-Fi, router, and Lobby settings. These steps can help isolate a local connection or room issue; they cannot fix a server-side problem or guarantee lower latency.
1. Check GT7 and PlayStation Network status
Before changing settings, check the Gran Turismo 7 official site for its Online Server Status indicator and check PlayStation Network status. Status can change, so use the live pages when the problem occurs rather than relying on an earlier report.
If either service reports an issue, wait for it to be resolved and try again. Local network changes are unlikely to help with a confirmed service outage. A server-side cause is plausible: in June 2023, Polyphony Digital attributed Sport Mode connection problems in North America and Europe, the Middle East and Africa to server overload, then reported applying a fix. That historical incident does not indicate a current outage. Polyphony Digital’s notice describes that event.
2. Check for a GT7 Lobby-specific problem
If the issue happens only in a particular room—for example, the host cannot start a race or members fail to appear—the problem may be with that Lobby rather than your general connection. Check current GT7 notices and make sure the game is up to date before applying an older workaround.

A notice updated September 1, 2025, documented Lobby issues including a room stuck at “Preparing,” missing members, and a post-race progression problem. For the host’s inability to start, the notice suggested that everyone leave the room and re-enter. It said the issues would be fixed in a future update; it does not establish whether they persist in the current game build. Read Polyphony Digital’s notice for the reported issues and workaround.
3. Test the PS5 with a wired connection
If your PS5 is on Wi-Fi, connect it to the router with an Ethernet cable and try the same activity again. Polyphony Digital says GT7 works over Wi-Fi or a wired connection, but recommends wired networking for a more stable environment. This comparison can help identify whether the wireless link is contributing; it will not resolve a GT7 server problem.

Polyphony Digital’s online-play guidance gives this recommendation. If you need a cable, an Ethernet cable for PS5 is the relevant item; no particular brand or specification is required by that guidance.

4. Improve the Wi-Fi path if Ethernet is not practical
For a wireless PS5, try moving the console closer to the router and reducing obstructions between them. Sony lists console placement, distance, and obstructions as general PS5 network checks for error NW-102650-4. These are reasonable ways to check the wireless path, not a GT7-specific guarantee.
Sony’s NW-102650-4 troubleshooting page also recommends testing a wired connection where possible.

5. Restart the modem and router, then check firmware
- Turn off the modem and router.
- Wait at least five minutes before turning them back on, as Sony specifies in its NW-102650-4 troubleshooting steps.
- After the network is back online, reconnect the PS5 and test GT7.
- Check the router manufacturer’s instructions for a firmware update. Sony advises contacting the router vendor if you need help updating it.
A restart can clear some temporary local network problems, but it does not diagnose every cause of lag. The five-minute wait is Sony’s procedure for the cited connection error, not a GT7-specific timing requirement. See Sony’s full steps.
6. Inspect GT7’s connection quality and NAT type
In GT7, open the Lobby’s Room Settings and review the connection-quality and NAT-type indicators. Polyphony Digital says online experience depends on both. NAT type can affect whether you can join races, but a NAT label alone does not prove the cause of lag.

These descriptions are from Polyphony Digital’s GT7 online guidance. Do not change your network to an exposed direct connection solely to obtain Type 1; the guidance does not make that a general home-network security recommendation.

If GT7 reports connection quality as “Very Poor” or detects NAT Type 3, Polyphony Digital says the room host can lower the maximum number of participants to increase the chance of a better online race experience. Try this in the room’s settings and see whether that particular room becomes more usable.
This is a condition-specific workaround, not a universal way to increase internet speed. It may not help when the issue comes from your local connection, a different player’s connection, or GT7’s servers. Polyphony’s guidance explains the room indicators and participant adjustment.
8. Reserve advanced network changes for persistent problems
Sony’s NW-102650-4 page lists additional steps such as opening specified router ports, manually configuring a static IP address, and temporarily changing DNS. These are not routine first fixes for GT7 lag, and the page does not promise that they will reduce latency. If you consider port or router changes, Sony recommends consulting your internet service provider. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it affects the connection.

Polyphony Digital’s Update 1.09 notes included historical fixes for a rare online-race or Lobby application error and a rare progression reset associated with starting under an unstable network connection. Those past fixes are a reason to keep the game current, not evidence that the same defect is present now. Polyphony Digital’s update notice records those changes.

- If service status is disrupted, wait and retry after the service recovers.
- If wired play is better than Wi-Fi, focus on the wireless route between the PS5 and router.
- If GT7 flags “Very Poor” quality or NAT Type 3 in a Lobby, try the smaller-room workaround and check the router setup.
