“Lag” in Golf With Your Friends can mean two different problems: low frame rate on your PC or network delay between players. Low FPS, visual judder and stuttering in solo play usually point to graphics settings, drivers, background software or corrupted files. Rubber-banding, timeouts, lobby failures and disconnects are more likely to involve Steam, your firewall, the host or the network path.
These fixes target the Steam PC version, primarily on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Test after each change so you can identify the cause instead of reinstalling or buying hardware blindly.
First, identify the type of lag
| Symptom | Most likely area |
|---|---|
| Low FPS everywhere, including solo play | Graphics settings, drivers, hardware or background applications |
| Stuttering after alt-tabbing or when overlays appear | Overlay or background-app conflict, driver issue or display-mode behavior |
| Everyone freezes or a player disconnects | Network path, host, firewall or Steam connectivity |
| Network error, timeout or lobby failure | Firewall or antivirus, blocked Steam traffic, Steam cache, DLC or service availability |
| Only one course or Workshop map causes trouble | Corrupt files, Workshop content or a course-specific problem |
| The game launches but performance is poor | System requirements, drivers, overclocking, display mode or background load |
Golf With Your Friends supports online multiplayer for up to 12 players, so a poor frame rate can sometimes look like delayed input. Do not assume that a faster internet connection will fix low FPS. Steam store listing
Check the PC baseline first
Steam lists these Windows requirements:
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 10 | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel i3-2100 or AMD FX-6300 at 3.1 GHz or higher | Intel i5-6600 at 3.3 GHz or AMD FX 8350 at 4.0 GHz |
| Memory | 2 GB RAM | 4 GB RAM |
| Graphics | GTX 460, Radeon 6870 or Intel HD Graphics 630 | GTX 960 with 4 GB VRAM or AMD R9 280 with 3 GB VRAM |
| Storage | 4 GB available space | |
| Internet | Broadband connection for online play | |
Windows 7 remains on the game’s listed minimum requirements, but Steam’s client requirement is Windows 10 or later from January 1, 2024. In practice, Windows 10 or 11 is the sensible baseline for a current Steam installation. See Steam’s current listing.

1. Close background programs, downloads and overlays
Targets: stuttering, inconsistent FPS and hitching caused by competing CPU, GPU, memory or disk activity.
- Exit browsers, other launchers, recording tools, RGB utilities, overlays and unnecessary tray applications.
- Pause Steam downloads, Windows Update downloads, cloud synchronization and other large transfers.
- Restart the game and test the same course or multiplayer mode.
- If performance improves, reopen programs one at a time to find the conflict.
Team17 specifically recommends closing unnecessary programs and stopping simultaneous downloads when troubleshooting performance. Team17 performance guidance.
2. Lower graphics settings and change display mode
Targets: low FPS, visual judder and stuttering that also occurs in solo play.
- Set the game’s graphics options to their lowest values.
- Test fullscreen, borderless windowed and windowed modes.
- Keep the mode that produces the most stable result; fullscreen is not always best on every PC.
- Once the problem is gone, raise settings gradually until you find the limit.
If lowering settings makes no difference, the bottleneck may be the CPU, thermal throttling, background software, a driver or something other than graphics rendering. This is primarily an FPS test, not a fix for packet loss or a failed lobby connection. Team17 recommends both lowering settings and switching display modes.

3. Remove overclocks and complete Windows Update
Targets: crashes, instability, sudden stuttering and compatibility problems caused by unstable CPU, GPU or RAM settings.
- Temporarily return CPU, GPU and RAM settings to their default values. Include an undervolt or memory profile in this test.
- Reboot the PC.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install available updates and restart.
- Retest the game before changing anything else.
Older Team17 instructions use the former “Update & Security” label. The menu name varies by Windows version; the important step is to finish Windows Update and restart.
4. Update the graphics driver
Targets: poor performance, rendering errors, crashes and driver-game compatibility issues.
- Identify the GPU in Task Manager > Performance > GPU or Device Manager.
- Download the current stable driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel’s official website or official driver utility.
- Install it and reboot.
- Test Golf With Your Friends before installing third-party driver tools or tweaking advanced settings.
A driver update can help, but a newly introduced driver regression is also possible. If the issue began immediately after an update, returning to the previous known-good driver is a reasonable alternative, although the retrieved Team17 guidance does not document a specific rollback procedure.

5. Verify the Steam game files
Targets: missing or corrupted game files, especially when one course or mode behaves differently.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Golf With Your Friends and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files. Older Steam and Team17 instructions call this Local Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files….
- Wait for Steam to finish, then relaunch the game and retest.
Verification is less disruptive than an immediate reinstall and is the appropriate first check for damaged or missing files. If files are repeatedly replaced, investigate Workshop content, antivirus quarantine, storage health or update corruption.
6. Use a clean boot to find software conflicts
Targets: interference from startup software, security tools, overlays and hardware utilities.
- Press Windows + R, enter
msconfigand press Enter. - Open the Services tab.
- Check Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
- Open Task Manager from the Startup tab and disable nonessential startup applications.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
- After testing, re-enable services and startup items in batches until you identify the conflict.
Do not disable Microsoft services indiscriminately. The “Hide all Microsoft services” safeguard is essential. A clean boot is a diagnostic test, not a permanent gaming configuration.

- Open Start and search for
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Wait for the scan to complete.
- Restart if Windows reports that it repaired files.
- Test the game again.
SFC may help with Windows corruption, but it is not a guaranteed solution for a game-specific network outage.

Targets: disconnects, rubber-banding, timeouts, network errors and lobby failures.
- Ask whether the problem affects one player or everyone. If only one player fails, start with that player’s PC and network. If everyone fails simultaneously, a host, Steam, Team17 or wider service problem becomes more plausible.
- Restart both Steam and the game.
- If other games or services are also failing, restart the router.
- Test a wired connection or a different Wi-Fi band where possible.
- Temporarily test through a phone hotspot. If the hotspot works but home internet does not, suspect the router, ISP, DNS, firewall, NAT or network policy.
- Allow Steam and the game through Windows Firewall.
- Check whether antivirus or third-party firewall software is blocking them. Use only a short, controlled test and restore protection immediately.
- On school, university, office, hotel or shared networks, ask the administrator whether Steam traffic or required Steam ports are blocked. Do not forward random ports on a home router without a specific, documented need.
- Clear Steam’s download cache if Steam downloads, starts or connectivity behavior appears abnormal.
- If the issue began after enabling DLC, temporarily disable the Caddy Pack and retest. Team17’s indexed network-error guidance mentions this as a possible workaround, but it does not establish the DLC as a universal cause.
Team17’s indexed network guidance mentions internet-quality checks, firewall and antivirus troubleshooting, shared-network restrictions, Steam’s download cache and hotspot testing. The linked network pages have not remained consistently available, so treat those game-specific details as attributed troubleshooting guidance rather than a guarantee of a current, universal procedure. If none of the fixes work
Contact Team17 support with a concise record of what happened and what you tested. Include:
- Windows version
- CPU, GPU and RAM
- Whether solo play also lags
- The exact error message
- Whether a phone hotspot works
- Whether Steam reported repaired files
- Whether disabling the Caddy Pack changed the behavior
- A DxDiag report if requested by support
These details help separate a local performance fault from a connection, account, service or game-specific problem. Team17 technical support.
What not to do first
- Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection.
- Do not install registry cleaners, unofficial DLLs or “game booster” utilities.
- Do not use arbitrary port-forwarding numbers.
- Do not change DNS as though it were a guaranteed fix.
- Do not reinstall Windows or buy a new GPU or faster internet plan before isolating the cause.
Conclusion
Start with the symptom: fix graphics, drivers, background software and files when solo play has low FPS; investigate Steam, firewalls, shared networks, the router and DLC when multiplayer alone fails. The hotspot comparison and the “one player versus everyone” test are especially useful because they quickly reveal whether the fault is local or network-wide. No single step guarantees a fix, but this order keeps the safest and most informative tests ahead of disruptive changes.
