8 Games You Didn’t Know You Could Play in Microsoft Excel

Excel can host games—but most are community-built workbooks, not current built-in features. Here are eight examples, with desktop/web compatibility and macro-safety advice.

Microsoft Excel can host far more than budgets and pivot tables. Its cells can become game boards, formulas can enforce rules, conditional formatting can show game states, and VBA can add keyboard controls, animation, and computer opponents.

But there is an important distinction: these are not eight games bundled into current Microsoft Excel. The list combines one famous historical Easter egg with community-built workbooks, formula projects, and VBA recreations. Some work in Excel for the web; many require the desktop application.

Safety first: open downloaded workbooks with macros disabled. Microsoft warns that macros can contain malicious code and recommends enabling them only when you trust the file and understand what it does. See Microsoft’s macro-security guidance before opening an unfamiliar .xlsm file.

At a glance: which Excel games actually work today?

Compatibility depends on the individual workbook, your Excel version, operating system, macro settings, and whether the creator used obsolete controls such as ActiveX. This table describes the usual situation, not a guarantee for every download.

Game Type Typical format Desktop Excel Excel for the web Macro risk
Flight Simulator Historical Easter egg Excel 97-era behavior or recreation Only with the relevant old release or a recreation No Usually irrelevant to the original Easter egg
2048 Community recreation .xlsm or formula workbook Usually Depends on implementation Often
Conway’s Game of Life Formula or VBA simulation .xlsx or .xlsm Yes Formula-only versions may work Sometimes
Sudoku Puzzle workbook .xlsx, .xlsm, or printable sheet Yes Often, if formula-based Sometimes
Minesweeper Community recreation Usually .xlsm or an older workbook Usually Generally no for VBA versions Often
Snake VBA recreation .xlsm Usually No VBA execution in the browser Usually
Battleship Formula or VBA board game .xlsx or .xlsm Yes Depends on implementation Often
Mastermind Formula or VBA puzzle .xlsx or .xlsm Yes Formula-only versions may work Sometimes

Excel for the web is useful for formula-driven games and collaborative puzzle sheets. It is not a substitute for desktop Excel when a workbook depends on VBA, ActiveX, older .xls behavior, or animated keyboard input. Microsoft describes Office Scripts as a newer automation system for supported Excel environments, but Office Scripts are not a drop-in replacement for every VBA game.

1. Excel 97 Flight Simulator

Status: historical Easter egg.

The most famous Excel game is the flight simulator associated with Excel 97. It transformed the spreadsheet into a crude 3D-style environment and reportedly included a developer-credit display. The feature is a piece of Excel history, not a game that current Microsoft 365 users can expect to uncover in a normal installation.

That distinction matters because many online lists describe the simulator as though it were still hidden inside Excel. It was tied to the relevant older release. A modern reader should treat it as a historical curiosity or look for a clearly identified recreation rather than downloading unsupported software from an unknown site.

The original concept is a striking demonstration of how much developers could hide inside a spreadsheet application, but it is the least practical game on this list. Historical context is documented by Contextures and in Microsoft’s older discussion of unusual Excel features.

Best reason to try it: it is the classic Excel Easter egg.

Main limitation: do not expect the original behavior to work in current Excel, and do not follow an unverified activation sequence as though it applied to Microsoft 365.

2. 2048

Status: modern community recreation.

2048 is a natural fit for a spreadsheet. A four-by-four range can represent the board, each numbered tile can occupy a cell, and formulas or VBA can process movement and tile merging. Conditional formatting supplies the familiar visual differences between tile values.

Formula-only versions can be relatively safe and may work in Excel for the web. Other workbooks use VBA to make keyboard input and movement feel more immediate. Those versions normally require desktop Excel and may display an Enable Content warning before they respond.

Excel does not officially bundle 2048 as a current built-in game. It is a recreation made by Excel enthusiasts; examples and technical discussion have appeared in Vertex42’s Excel games collection, Microsoft’s older feature coverage, and community discussion on Reddit.

Best reason to try it: the rules are recognizable and the grid makes the spreadsheet mechanics easy to see.

Main limitation: the smoothest versions are often macro-enabled.

3. Conway’s Game of Life

Status: formula-friendly simulation.

Conway’s Game of Life is technically a zero-player cellular automaton rather than a conventional game. You choose an initial pattern, then the cells evolve automatically according to a simple rule: each square’s next state depends on the number of live neighbors around it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Excel is particularly well suited to this idea. One cell represents one square in the grid; formulas count neighboring live cells; and conditional formatting colors live and dead states. A new generation can be calculated in a second range, then copied or refreshed repeatedly. VBA can automate the generations, but it is not essential.

That makes Game of Life one of the better choices for readers who want to experiment without enabling macros. A formula-only workbook is also easier to open in Excel for the web, although large or heavily calculated grids may behave differently across versions.

See Vertex42’s examples of Excel-based games for the kind of worksheet implementation this supports.

Best reason to try it: it demonstrates Excel’s strengths as a grid, calculation engine, and visualization tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Main limitation: it is more of an evolving simulation than an arcade game with a score and a win screen.

4. Sudoku

Status: ranges from printable worksheet to interactive puzzle game.

Sudoku fits directly into Excel’s cell grid. A basic workbook can provide a printable puzzle. A more useful one can highlight duplicate numbers, validate rows, columns, and boxes, track candidates, generate puzzles, or include a solver.

Those are different products, and they should not be described interchangeably:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Printable worksheet: a static grid for solving with a pencil or by typing.
  • Validator: flags illegal duplicates or incorrect entries.
  • Solver: calculates a completed solution automatically.
  • Interactive game: adds puzzle generation, difficulty, feedback, timing, scoring, or a win condition.

Formula-based Sudoku usually has the best chance of working in Excel for the web. A macro-enabled version may offer more automation but introduces the same security and compatibility questions as other .xlsm files. Downloadable examples and Excel puzzle projects can be found through Vertex42 and Excel Games.

Best reason to try it: it turns familiar spreadsheet operations—ranges, validation, and conditional formatting—into a practical puzzle interface.

Main limitation: many files called “Sudoku games” are only printable templates.

5. Minesweeper

Status: community recreation, often macro-enabled.

Minesweeper can be recreated by using cells as covered squares, formulas to count neighboring mines, and formatting to reveal safe areas or flags. VBA can handle clicks, random mine placement, and cascading reveals more conveniently than formulas alone.

There are several generations of Excel Minesweeper projects. Some archives list older games such as Mine3D and X-Ray, including files designed for Excel 97 or Excel 2000. That history is useful but also a warning: an old workbook may rely on macro behavior, controls, or interfaces that no longer work correctly in Microsoft 365.

Before opening one, check its extension and provenance. A modern, formula-based workbook is easier to inspect than an old macro project. A VBA version should be opened with macros disabled first and enabled only if the source is trustworthy. Examples and archival material are available from Chip Pearson’s Excel games archive, Vertex42, and Excel Games.

Best reason to try it: it shows how formulas can model hidden state and neighborhood-based rules.

Main limitation: older versions may fail because of obsolete controls or security settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Snake

Status: usually a VBA arcade recreation.

Snake uses a cell range as the playfield and a sequence of colored cells as the snake. VBA can move the body, detect collisions, place food, keep score, and capture arrow-key input. That is why Snake often feels more like a traditional game than a static spreadsheet puzzle.

Controls are workbook-specific. Arrow keys are common, but a particular file may require buttons, a start command, or focus on a particular worksheet. Clicking elsewhere in Excel can also cause the keyboard input to be captured by the wrong part of the application.

Most VBA Snake workbooks require desktop Excel. They should not be advertised as browser games unless the specific implementation is formula-based or has been rebuilt for a web-compatible environment. Examples have appeared in Excel game collections, Excel Games, and community discussions such as this Reddit example.

Best reason to try it: it is the clearest arcade-style demonstration of cells being used as pixels.

Main limitation: real-time movement and keyboard control commonly depend on VBA.

7. Battleship

Status: formula or VBA board-game recreation.

Battleship is almost tailor-made for a spreadsheet because the board is already a rectangular range of cells. A pass-and-play workbook can use separate sheets for each player, while a single-player version can use VBA to place ships and respond to shots.

When choosing a workbook, identify which type it is. Some are printable boards, some are pass-and-play games, and others include a computer opponent. A protected or hidden sheet may conceal a player’s fleet, but protection is not the same thing as strong security: it is simply part of the game’s interface.

Formula-only versions are more suitable for the web. A computer opponent, automated ship placement, or clickable interface is more likely to need VBA. Vertex42 includes Battleship among its examples of games that can be represented in Excel; see its Excel games guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best reason to try it: it demonstrates how Excel can support both two-player pass-and-play and more automated board-game logic.

Main limitation: “Battleship in Excel” may mean anything from a static board to a complete opponent-driven game.

8. Mastermind

Status: particularly strong formula and conditional-formatting project.

Mastermind may be the best example of a game that uses Excel for what Excel actually does well. A hidden code occupies one range, a player’s guesses occupy another, and formulas compare the two to calculate exact-position matches and correct colors in the wrong positions. Conditional formatting can turn the feedback into the familiar colored pegs.

A formula-only version does not need real-time animation or keyboard hooks, so it is generally easier to share and more likely to work in Excel for the web. VBA can add code generation, buttons, scoring, and a more polished interface, but it is optional.

Mastermind is included in community collections such as Vertex42’s Excel games examples. As with Sudoku, check whether a downloaded file is a complete interactive game or merely a formatted template.

Best reason to try it: it makes hidden values, comparisons, and conditional formatting tangible without requiring animation.

Main limitation: the quality of the experience depends heavily on whether the workbook includes proper validation and feedback.

How to open an Excel game safely

There is no universal installation process because these games come from different creators and use different technologies. Use this workflow instead:

  1. Identify the file type. An .xlsx file is normally macro-free. An .xlsm file can contain VBA. An .xls file uses an older format and may have compatibility problems.
  2. Use a source you trust. Do not treat a search result or download archive as an endorsement by Microsoft.
  3. Save the file locally and make a backup copy. Work on the copy, not the only version of the download.
  4. Open it with macros disabled. Inspect the sheets, buttons, external links, and prompts before deciding whether the workbook deserves more access.
  5. Enable content only if you trust the creator and file. Microsoft’s warning bar may show an Enable Content option, but that does not mean the file is safe.
  6. Use desktop Excel when necessary. A VBA or ActiveX project generally will not function in Excel for the web.
  7. Close without saving if behavior is unexpected. If a file requests unusual permissions, opens unexplained links, or comes from an uncertain source, do not enable macros.

Microsoft’s guidance on enabling and disabling macros explains that users can view or edit a workbook without enabling its code. Microsoft also provides separate guidance for ActiveX settings, which matter because some older games rely on controls that are not portable across systems.

VBA, formulas, and Office Scripts: what is doing the work?

Formulas calculate rules and state. They are ideal for Sudoku validation, Mastermind feedback, and Game of Life generations.

Conditional formatting makes the state visible by changing colors, icons, or emphasis when a cell contains a particular value.

VBA is Excel’s traditional desktop automation language. Many .xlsm games use it for buttons, randomization, keyboard input, animation, and computer-controlled opponents. It is also the reason a workbook may ask you to enable macros.

Office Scripts are Microsoft’s newer automation system for Excel for the web, Windows, and Mac. They can automate supported workbook actions, but a workbook built around VBA controls cannot simply be assumed to work because Office Scripts exist. Microsoft’s Office Scripts documentation explains the supported environments and intended automation model.

Which Excel games are best in the browser?

Choose a formula-first game if you want to stay in Excel for the web. Game of Life, formula-based Sudoku, Mastermind, and some simple board games are the strongest candidates. Browser compatibility still depends on the workbook’s formulas and features.

Choose desktop Excel for VBA-driven Snake, Minesweeper, 2048, or Battleship, and for older .xls files. ActiveX-dependent workbooks may be especially troublesome on Mac or in newer Excel versions.

Microsoft offers free web versions of Excel through a Microsoft account, while desktop applications and some advanced capabilities are associated with paid Microsoft 365 plans or one-time Office editions. The relevant choice for these games is simple: if you only want to try a formula-based worksheet, the web version may be enough; if you want the broadest compatibility with macro-enabled games, desktop Excel is the safer assumption. See Microsoft’s explanation of free web apps versus desktop Microsoft 365 applications.

When an Excel game does not work

  • No “Enable Content” prompt: the file may not contain VBA, or your security settings may block it.
  • The workbook opens but does nothing: it may require desktop Excel, a particular worksheet, a start button, or keyboard focus inside the game area.
  • The file is read-only: save a local copy with Save As and test that copy.
  • Buttons fail on a Mac: the workbook may use Windows-only ActiveX controls.
  • The file worked in Excel 2010 but not Microsoft 365: it may depend on obsolete APIs, controls, or old compatibility behavior.
  • A browser warning appears: move the file to desktop Excel only if the source is trusted; do not bypass a warning blindly.
  • The workbook requests external links: reject or break the links unless their purpose is clear.

Most “compatibility” problems are not mysterious game bugs. They come from confusing a historical Easter egg with a current feature, opening a VBA workbook in the browser, or expecting a static template to behave like a finished game.

Why Excel is surprisingly good at games

A spreadsheet already contains the core parts of a simple game engine:

  • Cells provide the board or playfield.
  • Formulas provide rules and state transitions.
  • Conditional formatting provides graphics.
  • VBA provides events, controls, randomization, and animation.
  • Office Scripts can automate supported modern Excel workflows.

That does not make Excel a general-purpose game engine. It does explain why grid-based games work so well: their boards can be represented directly by ranges, and their rules can be expressed through calculations.
