This is a playful change of perspective, not a claim that they are villains in their own stories. In some cases the idea depends on different circumstances or player choices; in others, it simply asks what it would feel like to be the person they were coming after.
What makes a hero read like a villain?
A protagonist’s strengths can look very different from the other side of the conflict. A power that saves the world can also make its wielder terrifying; a mission framed as justice can leave a trail of bodies; and a quiet, persistent pursuer can feel more frightening than a loud enemy. The characters below are compared by the source of their threat, their methods, their moral record, how much player choice shapes them, their emotional vulnerability, and the possible scale of collateral harm. These are lenses for a subjective list, not a formal scorecard.
Eight protagonists with villain potential
1. Isaac Clarke — Dead Space
Isaac is an engineer, not a born executioner. EA describes him as sent to repair the USG Ishimura, only to find its crew slaughtered, Nicole missing, and hostile Necromorphs aboard; the ordeal also takes a toll on his sanity. That official setup casts him as a survivor. The villain reading comes from how that survival looks: an armored figure wielding heavy tools, cutting through enemies at close range, and carrying psychological strain after Nicole’s loss and contact with the Marker. In a different story, the same combination of frightening equipment, trauma, and destructive capability could make him a relentless antagonist rather than the person we root for. EA’s official Dead Space page describes the game and Isaac’s predicament.
2. Kratos — God of War
Kratos’s earlier story is already built around vengeance against the Greek gods, with mortal bloodshed along the way. That history gives him a credible villain-shaped past: formidable power, a personal grievance, and a willingness to pursue it violently. The 2018 God of War changes the frame. PlayStation describes his vengeance against Olympus as behind him and his new challenge as controlling the rage that defined him while mentoring and protecting Atreus. The tension between those identities is what makes the reframe work: a man trying to master his capacity for violence can be compelling, but if the old purpose returned, he would be an imposing antagonist. PlayStation’s official game page outlines the 2018 story.

3. Max Caulfield — Life is Strange
Max’s villain potential is speculative, rooted in the consequences of time manipulation rather than a canonical turn to evil. Rewinding time offers the chance to reconsider actions, but power over events also raises unsettling possibilities: what if someone kept revising other people’s lives to get the outcome they wanted? The story’s choice concerning Chloe adds emotional stakes to that question. Max could make a chilling antagonist not because the premise declares her cruel, but because a seemingly intimate, personal decision can carry consequences beyond the person making it.
4. Corvo Attano — Dishonored
Corvo’s threat depends heavily on how the player chooses to act. Powers including teleportation, possession, and time manipulation make him dangerous before a confrontation even begins; a high-chaos, lethal approach turns that potential into a record of killings. That conditionality is central to the villain idea. A low-chaos Corvo and a high-chaos Corvo are not interchangeable readings of the same character, and the player’s choices help determine whether his pursuit of justice looks restrained or terrifyingly indiscriminate.

5. Kirby — Kirby
Kirby is the list’s comic-horror pick. His cute appearance sits in absurd contrast with the image of a hero who can swallow foes, copy their abilities, and wield extraordinary power. The joke is not that Kirby has a serious villain’s moral record; it is that the familiar actions look unsettling when described from the defeated enemy’s point of view. A round, cheerful figure with the capacity to absorb opponents is a surprisingly effective monster premise.
6. Doom Slayer — Doom
Doom Slayer’s appeal comes from relentless violence directed at demons. Turn that premise around, and the same determination, heavy weaponry, and fearsome reputation become a nightmare for anyone in his path. This is a perspective flip rather than an allegation about his canon role: the question is how an opponent would experience being hunted by someone who does not seem to stop. The threat is direct and overwhelming, not subtle or morally ambiguous.

7. Agent 47 — Hitman
Agent 47 is the most straightforwardly compromised figure here: an antihero rather than a conventional hero, defined by paid killings and professional competence. Disguises and infiltration let him approach targets without announcing himself, which supplies the core of a stalking-antagonist story. Unlike the examples built on immense power or collateral damage, his menace is controlled and personal. He is frightening because he can blend into the world around his target and turn preparation into a lethal advantage.
8. Link — The Legend of Zelda
Link’s persistence, broad range of weapons and abilities, and near-silent presentation can feel intimidating when the usual heroic framing is removed. Imagine being the obstacle between him and his objective: he keeps coming, adapts to what stands in his way, and communicates little about what he intends. That does not make Link a villain in his games. It makes him an effective antagonist concept if the story put the reader on the receiving end of his determination.

Why the villain premise varies from character to character
These are not eight versions of the same kind of antagonist. Isaac and Kratos draw on trauma and a violent past; Max’s case turns on the possible consequences of a power and a choice; Corvo’s depends on player conduct; Kirby’s is comic contrast; Doom Slayer and Link work through a reversal of perspective; Agent 47 brings stealth and professional killing. The premise is strongest when it preserves those differences instead of treating every powerful protagonist as morally equivalent.
