Start with Windows, not Steam. Press Win + R, enter joy.cpl, select the controller, and choose Properties → Test. If it is missing there, the fault is probably the cable, Bluetooth connection, driver, hidden device, or hardware. If it responds in joy.cpl but not in Steam, focus on Steam Input and remapping conflicts. If Steam sees it but one game does not, investigate that game’s controller mode and compatibility.
Steam officially supports Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro, Steam Controller, and DirectInput categories, but Windows detection, Steam detection, and game support are separate layers. The fixes below move from low-risk connection checks to software conflicts.

1. Try another USB port and a real data cable
Use a different USB port, preferably a rear motherboard port on a desktop, and bypass hubs and front-panel ports while testing. Try a known-good cable: some cables charge a controller and light its LEDs but carry no data. Disconnect the controller, fully exit Steam, reconnect it, and reopen Steam.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Test the controller on another computer or console if possible. If it works elsewhere, continue with Windows or Steam troubleshooting; if it fails everywhere, suspect the cable, connector, battery, or controller.
USB is usually the simplest diagnostic path because it removes pairing, range, and battery variables. Connection guidance is documented by DS4Windows.
2. Reconnect the controller and verify it in Windows with joy.cpl
Press Win + R, type joy.cpl, press Enter, select the device, and choose Properties → Test. Move every stick and press several buttons.
- If it is not listed, Steam cannot reliably fix the problem; investigate USB, Bluetooth, Windows, drivers, or hardware.
- If it is listed and responds, open Steam afterward and test again.
Also check Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Devices and Win + X → Device Manager. In Device Manager inspect Bluetooth, Human Interface Devices, and Sound, video and game controllers. Look for warning icons and for entries that appear or disappear when you connect the pad. The Windows-detection procedure is described at this controller-check guide.

3. Remove and re-pair the controller over Bluetooth
For a wireless controller, charge it, disconnect it from consoles, phones, tablets, and other PCs, and put it into its actual pairing mode. Then follow this clean pairing sequence:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Devices.
- Select the controller and choose Remove device.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on, then restart Windows.
- Put the controller into pairing mode.
- Choose Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device → Bluetooth and pair it again.
Keep the controller near the PC. If you use a USB Bluetooth dongle, try another USB port. Microsoft lists removal and re-adding as standard Bluetooth recovery steps at its Bluetooth troubleshooting guide.
4. Update Windows, USB, Bluetooth, chipset, and controller drivers
In Win + X → Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click the adapter, choose Update driver → Search automatically for drivers, and restart. Check the same way for relevant USB and HID entries. If Windows says the best driver is already installed, check the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s support page for a newer Bluetooth or chipset package.
Windows normally handles supported USB and Bluetooth gamepads automatically, but unusual third-party devices may need manufacturer software. Microsoft documents Bluetooth driver updates at this support page. As a later recovery step, uninstalling the Bluetooth adapter in Device Manager and restarting lets Windows reinstall it; do this only after recording the adapter model and any manufacturer driver.

5. Update the controller’s firmware with the official app
Firmware can fix recognition and pairing faults, but update it after connection and Windows detection checks. Use the manufacturer’s official updater, keep the controller connected by USB when instructed, and do not remove power during the update.
- Xbox: use Microsoft’s Xbox Accessories app for supported controllers. Steam’s support instructions reference it for Xbox One S firmware updates: Steam support.
- PlayStation: use Sony’s current official firmware updater or PlayStation Accessories software for the exact model.
- Other brands: use only the maker’s updater and verify model compatibility first.
6. Enable the correct Steam Input support and test the per-game override
Open Steam → Settings → Controller. Enable support for the relevant family—Xbox, PlayStation, generic gamepad, or Switch Pro when offered—then open Steam’s controller configuration view. Steam’s labels have changed over time; older documentation calls the area “General Controller Settings.” See Steam’s player setup documentation.
For a specific title, open Library → right-click the game → Properties → Controller. Test the global default, then the opposite per-game state (Steam Input enabled versus disabled), restarting the game between tests.
- Xbox: native XInput usually works; Steam Input helps with remapping or games with weak native support.
- PlayStation: Steam Input can translate to XInput for games that expect Xbox-style devices. Disable it when a game has good native DualShock or DualSense support and you want PlayStation prompts or features.
- Switch Pro and DirectInput: Steam Input is often the practical mapping layer, but it is not a guarantee for every replica or unusual device.
Do not treat “enable Steam Input” as universal: adding a second translation layer can create duplicate input.

7. Stop conflicting remappers and fix virtual-controller or HidHide conflicts
Exit DS4Windows, reWASD, InputMapper, DualSenseX, BetterJoy, and similar tools for the first isolation test. Restart Windows, connect the physical controller, test it in joy.cpl, then open Steam. Re-enable one tool at a time only if needed.
DS4Windows commonly creates a virtual Xbox 360/XInput controller. Steam may then communicate with that virtual device instead of the physical PlayStation controller; that can be intentional. The problem is when both physical and virtual devices reach the game and produce double input. DS4Windows explains these cases at its Steam troubleshooting page.
Choose one translation layer:
- Use Steam Input alone for a Steam-launched game when it provides the required compatibility.
- Use DS4Windows alone for a non-Steam game or launcher that requires XInput emulation.
If you use DS4Windows, check Settings → Device Options, restart it after changes, and ensure HidHide allows DS4Windows to see the physical device. If HidHide hides the controller from both DS4Windows and the game, temporarily disable hiding to identify the cause. Relevant guidance is available for DS4Windows detection and installation setup.

A working Steam tester does not prove that every game supports the device. The title may expect XInput, have native PlayStation support that conflicts with emulation, disable controllers, or have been launched outside Steam.

- Close the game.
- Connect the controller and verify it in
joy.cpl. - Open Library → right-click the game → Properties → Controller.
- Try the global default, then the opposite Steam Input state.
- Launch the title through Steam and test before enabling overlays or remappers.
- For a non-Steam title, add it as a non-Steam game or use one appropriate remapper—not several at once.
If the controller works in other games, check the title’s current store page, documentation, and in-game controller setting. A game-specific failure is not proof that Steam has stopped detecting the controller.
Controller-specific checks
Xbox controllers
Test USB first, update through Xbox Accessories, and expect strong XInput compatibility. Steam Input remains optional and game-dependent.
DualShock 4 and DualSense
Steam Input can translate for XInput-only games, while native support may be better with Steam Input disabled. Do not normally run Steam Input and DS4Windows together.
Switch Pro controllers
Bluetooth pairing and Steam Input are central. Confirm the controller is paired as a Bluetooth device rather than merely charging over USB, and expect button labels to differ from Xbox prompts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Generic and third-party controllers
Verify the device in joy.cpl, try Steam’s generic-device support, and check the manufacturer’s driver or software. Unbranded devices may expose unusual protocols or incomplete information.
When to stop troubleshooting software
If the controller fails with a known-good data cable, another USB port, both wired and Bluetooth paths where applicable, joy.cpl, Device Manager, and another computer or console, the likely cause is a damaged port, failed battery or wireless adapter, hardware defect, or incompatible clone. Repair or replace the device rather than repeatedly reinstalling drivers. If hardware is the issue, a known-good data cable is the first inexpensive replacement; a Bluetooth adapter may help only when wired operation works and the PC’s Bluetooth path is the failing part.
