“Steam quit unexpectedly” is a generic macOS crash alert, not a diagnosis. Steam itself may be crashing, a single game may be failing, a controller or external drive may be triggering the exit, or macOS may be blocking a damaged app. Work through the reversible fixes first and protect your Steam data before removing support files.
Before you start
- Note your macOS version in Apple menu → About This Mac.
- In the same window, Processor usually means Intel; Chip means Apple silicon.
- Record whether Steam crashes immediately, during sign-in or Store loading, when launching one game, or when connecting a controller.
- Do not assume Steam Cloud contains every save. Some games keep local saves outside Steam Cloud.
Apple’s general sequence for an app that quits is to reopen or force-quit it, restart the Mac, install updates, and reinstall only when necessary: Apple support guidance.
Quick diagnosis

1. Force-quit Steam completely and restart
- Press Option–Command–Esc, select Steam, and click Force Quit.
- Open Applications → Utilities → Activity Monitor.
- Search for and quit remaining processes such as Steam, Steam Helper and steamwebhelper.
- Choose Apple menu → Restart, then try Steam once.
This clears a process that remained partially closed. Apple also documents force-quitting and restarting at this Mac user guide. If Steam still quits, move to updates rather than repeatedly opening it.

2. Update macOS and Steam
Update macOS
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → General → Software Update.
- Install available updates and restart.
Update Steam
If Steam stays open, use its Steam menu to check for a client update and let it restart. If it cannot remain open, download the installer from Valve’s official page: store.steampowered.com/about.

A current macOS or Steam build is not guaranteed to support every older game, graphics API, anti-cheat component, controller driver or overlay. Check the affected game separately.
3. Check Rosetta 2 on Apple-silicon Macs
Use this step only when About This Mac shows an Apple silicon chip and an Intel-only Steam component or game may be involved. Intel Macs should not install Rosetta.
- Open Applications → Utilities → Terminal.
- Run
softwareupdate --install-rosetta. - If prompted for explicit license acceptance, run
softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-licenseinstead. - Approve the license and administrator password, then restart.
Terminal does not show password characters while you type. A community report describes this helping one Apple-silicon user, but it is anecdotal—not proof that Rosetta causes or fixes Steam crashes generally: report.

In Finder, control-click Applications → Steam → Get Info to see whether Steam is Application (Universal) or Application (Intel). If Open using Rosetta appears, test one setting at a time rather than toggling it repeatedly. If Rosetta is already installed, continue; it will not repair corrupted Steam data, a bad disk or a crashing game.
4. Refresh Steam’s client files without deleting your library
Back up first
Quit Steam and copy ~/Library/Application Support/Steam to a safe location. At minimum preserve:
steamapps— installed game filesuserdata— local Steam user dataconfig— settings and configuration- Screenshots and any game-specific local-save folders
Perform a controlled refresh
- In Finder, choose Go → Go to Folder and enter
~/Library/Application Support/Steam. - Move only clearly disposable client components to a temporary Desktop backup folder; do not delete the entire Steam directory.
- Relaunch Steam and let it rebuild or redownload required client files.
A community recovery report describes removing client files so Steam can rebuild, but it is not Valve documentation: reported procedure. Keep the backup until Steam, games, screenshots and saves are confirmed.

5. Disconnect controllers and other peripherals
- Quit Steam and unplug nonessential USB devices.
- Turn off or disconnect Bluetooth controllers, hubs, external drives, capture devices, docks and adapters.
- Restart Steam with nothing unnecessary attached.
- Reconnect devices one at a time to identify a trigger.
Test wired and Bluetooth modes separately, remove third-party controller-mapping utilities or overlays, and try another controller if possible. Apple notes that peripherals and incompatible enhancements can destabilize apps: Mac user guide. A Steam Community thread reports crashes around DualShock connection changes on Apple silicon; that is a failure mode to investigate, not evidence that DualShock devices generally cause crashes: thread.

6. Check Gatekeeper and Steam’s integrity
Use this branch only when macOS displays a security message such as “cannot be opened,” “unidentified developer,” “cannot be checked for malicious software,” or “is damaged.” A generic quit alert does not prove Gatekeeper is involved.
Trusted download with an ordinary verification warning
- Try opening Steam once.
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to Security, review any Open Anyway option, and use it only for an unmodified download from Valve.

“Will damage your computer” or repeated “damaged” warnings
Do not disable protections or force the app open. Delete the installer, download Steam again from Valve, and scan for malware if other suspicious symptoms exist. Apple explains that a blocked app can be modified, corrupted, malicious or have revoked authorization: security explanation. Do not grant Steam broad Full Disk Access as a blanket fix.

Prioritize this if several unrelated apps quit, files appear corrupted, Steam is on an external disk, or the Mac has suffered forced shutdowns.
- Open Applications → Utilities → Disk Utility.
- Choose View → Show All Devices.
- Run First Aid on the relevant volume, then the containers and physical device as Disk Utility presents them.
- Restart.
Apple says First Aid can fix some storage and file-system problems but cannot detect or repair every failure: Disk Utility guide. Back up immediately if repair fails; do not erase or reformat casually. If Steam uses an external library, test with that drive disconnected—an unmounted, read-only or failing disk can resemble a Steam crash.

8. Verify the game or reinstall Steam cleanly
Only one game crashes
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Control-click or right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify Integrity of Game Files.
This repairs or redownloads mismatched game files; it does not generally repair a Steam client that crashes before launch. Also disable mods, launch options, overlays and controller utilities, and check the game’s macOS, 32-bit and Apple-silicon compatibility. The verification path is documented by Aspyr: support guide.
Steam itself still crashes
- Back up
steamapps,userdata, screenshots and local saves. - Quit every Steam process in Activity Monitor.
- Delete Steam from Applications.
- Remove only remaining client files that you have identified and backed up; do not casually remove the library or save folders.
- Download Steam from Valve’s official page and reinstall.
- Sign in and re-add the existing library instead of immediately redownloading everything.
Apple cautions that deleting and reinstalling an app can remove data stored by that app: Apple’s app troubleshooting guidance. A normal application reinstall is different from deleting all Steam support data.
When none of these fixes works
Stop trying random Terminal commands or cleaner utilities. Collect your macOS version, Mac model and chip, Steam version if available, exact alert text, the point at which Steam exits, and whether a controller, dock, external display or external drive is connected. Save the relevant crash report from the macOS dialog or Console, then contact Valve Support or Apple Support. If multiple applications continue crashing, test Safe Mode or a new macOS user account and arrange Apple diagnostics or service; the cause may be macOS, storage, hardware, an incompatible plug-in or a peripheral rather than Steam.
