For most people looking for games to play in Messages, the easiest place to start is GamePigeon: a free-to-download, third-party iMessage app that bundles a wide selection of games, including 8-Ball, Cup Pong, Mini Golf, Sea Battle, Darts, Basketball, Anagrams, 20 Questions and Four in a Row. These are nine game picks, not nine separate downloads. Choose one based on whether you want a quick challenge, a longer turn-based match or a conversation prompt.
What counts as an iMessage game?
iMessage games are accessed through apps or extensions in Apple’s Messages app. You can open an app from a conversation and send its game or interactive attachment without leaving the chat. They are not ordinary SMS games: GamePigeon is listed as “Only for iMessage,” and the person receiving a challenge may need a compatible Apple device and the same app installed. GamePigeon is made by third-party developer Vitalii Zlotskii, not Apple. The U.S. App Store listing describes it as free with in-app purchases and gives it a 13+ age rating; storefront details, availability and purchase options can vary by region and change over time. Its listed collection includes many more games than the nine below, such as Chess, Checkers, Gomoku and Reversi.

These are editorial recommendations based on pace, approachability, conversation fit and the kind of competition they invite—not an official ranking or claim of hands-on testing. “Workplace-safe” is a judgment about the game’s general format, not a guarantee that it suits every team or workplace.

The listing does not document player limits for every game, so treat most picks as one-on-one challenges unless the game interface confirms otherwise.
How to install and send a game
- Open Messages and enter an iMessage conversation.
- Tap the + button beside the text field, then tap Store.
- Search for GamePigeon or another iMessage app and tap Get or its displayed price.
- Return to the conversation, tap +, choose the installed app and select a game.
- Send the game challenge in the conversation. The recipient may need to install the same app before they can play.
Apple’s current iPhone instructions use the + button to open iMessage apps and the Store to download them. Older directions that mention a four-dot drawer or a “More” button may not match the current interface.
The nine best games to try in Messages
1. 8-Ball — best all-around competitive pick
8-Ball is the strongest default if you and a friend want a recognizable head-to-head game with room for repeat matches. Its pool format is easy to understand, but aim and shot choice give it more competitive weight than a quick novelty challenge.

Choose by situation
- For a competitive one-on-one match: Start with 8-Ball; try Four in a Row if you prefer planning over aiming.

If the game is missing or the other person cannot play
The app does not appear in Messages
- Open a conversation, tap + and check the available apps.
- If the game is not listed, tap Store, search for it and confirm it is installed.
- Return to Messages and open the + menu again. If it still does not appear, restart Messages or the device and check for App Store updates.

The recipient cannot open or play the challenge
First check that the conversation is using iMessage and that the recipient has installed the same app. GamePigeon is marked “Only for iMessage,” so it is not a general SMS game. Device compatibility, operating-system version, account settings, parental controls, regional App Store availability or network restrictions may also interfere. Apple says iMessage apps are available on iPhone and iPad, but that does not establish that every interactive game plays identically on Mac, Apple Watch or every OS version; see Apple’s platform overview.
A game behaves differently or is unavailable
Check the app’s current App Store page and the game’s in-app menu. Catalogs, compatibility and regional availability can change; an Apple editorial collection of iMessage games is a discovery list, not a guarantee that every title remains available or is playable entirely inside Messages. Its Magnificent iMessage Games page has promoted other titles, including Words for iMessage, Tic Tac Toe, Pictoword and Boggle With Friends. Verify a title’s current listing and whether it is an iMessage app before downloading.
Do you need to pay?
The U.S. App Store lists GamePigeon as free to download with in-app purchases. The listing has shown optional GamePigeon+ and cosmetic packs, but prices and purchase contents are storefront- and date-sensitive. Check the live listing before buying; none of the recommendations here depends on purchasing a cosmetic item. If you want a broader catalog, Games for iMessage Text & Chat is another App Store option. Its listing advertises titles such as Bowling, Skeeball and Cup Pong, but its catalog and paid features may change, so confirm what is currently available in the app.
