For a quick clip on Windows, start with Xbox Game Bar; for webcam layouts, commentary, and editing control, use OBS Studio. GeForce and Radeon owners can also use their GPU software for hotkey recording and replay, while Steam Game Recording is convenient for Steam libraries. If you want console footage on your PC, use a capture card with OBS. The right choice depends on whether you need a short highlight, an entire session, or production-ready footage.
Choose a recorder by what you want to capture
| Your goal | Good starting point |
|---|---|
| Save a short clip without installing software | Xbox Game Bar |
| Keep a replay buffer and save a moment after it happens | NVIDIA App, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, Steam Game Recording, or OBS Replay Buffer |
| Record a full session with webcam, scenes, or commentary | OBS Studio |
| Record games in your Steam library and trim clips on a timeline | Steam Game Recording |
| Capture an emulator, browser game, or awkward launcher | OBS Window Capture or Display Capture |
| Capture a console or second PC | A capture card connected to OBS |
Before choosing, check whether you are on Windows 10 or 11, which GPU you have, where the game runs, whether you need microphone or voice-chat audio, and how much disk space you can spare. There is no universal performance winner: the effect depends on the game, resolution, frame rate, encoder, available CPU and GPU capacity, storage speed, and other overlays or recording apps running at the same time.
1. Xbox Game Bar: the no-download option
Use it for
Short clips, quick troubleshooting videos, or a simple recording when you do not need custom scenes or a complex audio setup. Game Bar is built into Windows 10 and Windows 11; Microsoft documents its recording controls and audio options here.
Recommended Free Tools
Start and stop a recording
- If necessary, enable Xbox Game Bar in Windows Settings. Open the game you want to capture.
- Press Windows + Alt + R to start recording; press the same shortcut to stop.
- Press Windows + Alt + M to toggle microphone recording while recording.
- Look for the MP4 in VideosCaptures.
In Game Bar’s Capture settings, check the audio choice. Microsoft documents options for capturing all computer audio, game audio, a microphone, apps, or system sounds. Choose what you actually want before a long session. Game Bar is not as suited as OBS to scenes, overlays, multiple audio tracks, or detailed encoding control. Protected or unusual applications may not capture as expected, and leaving a long recording running can consume substantial storage.

2. OBS Studio with Game Capture: the creator’s all-purpose setup
Use it for
Full sessions, tutorials, streaming, webcam footage, commentary, and recordings where you want control over scenes, audio, resolution, frame rate, and encoder. OBS Studio is free and open source; get it from the official download page.
Set it up
- Install OBS and open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. The wizard helps establish an initial recording or streaming setup.
- Create or select a scene, then add a Game Capture source. OBS describes Game Capture as a Windows-only source intended for capturing 3D games.
- If you need commentary, add an Audio Input Capture source for the microphone.
- Check the audio meters, then review recording options under Settings → Output.
- Record a short test, play it back, and confirm the image, game sound, microphone, and save location before recording anything important.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends the wizard and a test recording. Use a hardware encoder when supported and when its quality and performance suit your setup; hardware encoding still uses system resources and writes a file to disk. Match the output resolution and frame rate to your intended use rather than assuming the highest settings are automatically best.
Game Capture can fail with some games, anti-cheat systems, launchers, or protected windows. OBS also documents capture and performance issues when the game and OBS use different GPUs, which can happen on laptops with integrated and discrete graphics. Check its GPU selection guide if you see a black screen or instability.

3. OBS Studio with Window Capture: target one application
Use it for
A windowed or borderless game, a tutorial focused on one application, or a fallback when Game Capture does not work. Add a Window Capture source, select the game window, position it in the scene, and test the image and audio. OBS lists Window Capture among its standard sources in the Quick Start Guide.
Because it targets a window, this mode avoids recording unrelated desktop activity. It can still fail if the game changes rendering mode, minimizes, uses an incompatible graphics API, or launches the rendered game in a separate process. If the window is black or frozen, switch the game from exclusive fullscreen to borderless or windowed mode, select the window again, and check that OBS and the game are using the same GPU. Then try Game Capture or Display Capture as appropriate.
4. OBS Studio with Display Capture: record the whole screen
Use it for
Emulators, browser games, unusual clients, or cases where the other OBS capture modes show a black screen. Add a Display Capture source, choose the monitor, and test before playing. OBS documents Display Capture for Windows and Linux; macOS uses its macOS Screen Capture source in the same guide.

This is broad compatibility at the cost of privacy and precision: everything visible on that monitor can appear in the recording, including notifications, messages, and confidential windows. Turn off desktop notifications and close anything private first. In a multi-monitor setup, confirm that you chose the right display; avoid leaving OBS visible within the display being captured, which can create a recursive image.

Use it for
GeForce owners who want hotkey recording or a replay buffer without building an OBS scene. NVIDIA says supported GeForce GPUs use the dedicated NVENC video encoder, and documents the hardware requirements here.
Configure recording and replay
- Open the NVIDIA App and bring up the in-game overlay with Alt + Z.
- Set the recording options, audio sources, save location, and Instant Replay preferences.
- Use the overlay recording control or its configured hotkey to begin a full recording. Enable Instant Replay if you want to save recent gameplay after a moment occurs.
NVIDIA documents capture support for DirectX games, windowed and borderless games, and desktop capture; its explanation is here. OpenGL, Java, and web-based games may be captured through desktop capture in appropriate windowed or borderless modes. Availability still depends on the game, GPU, software, and settings; do not assume every game or protected window will record. Recording resolution and replay duration likewise depend on hardware, codec, application version, and configuration, so set and test your own options rather than relying on older advertised limits.
Copy-protected content can block desktop recording. NVIDIA documents a Discord-related DRM case and a desktop-capture workaround in its troubleshooting article. If capture fails, check protection restrictions and test without other overlay or recording apps.
6. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition Record
Use it for
Radeon owners who want recording and replay controls integrated with AMD software rather than configuring OBS. AMD’s Record settings documentation lists resolution choices from 360p through 2160p, including in-game resolution, where the system supports them.
The Tool Desk

- Open Record & Stream Settings and follow the setup wizard.
- Choose recording quality, whether to enable desktop recording, microphone and camera options, hotkeys, and the save location.
- Make a test recording and verify the video and audio before starting a long session.
Available controls vary with the Adrenalin version and hardware; AMD notes that not every option is present on every system. Its video and streaming documentation also describes limitations involving some OpenGL recording scenarios, VR footage, and simultaneous use of other Windows capture systems. Use the Radeon tool for convenient clips; choose OBS when you need more elaborate scenes or audio routing.

7. Steam Game Recording: timeline and clip tools for Steam games
Use it for
Steam players who want background capture, on-demand recording, event markers, a timeline, and quick trimming or export. Steam documents three modes—recording disabled, background recording, and on-demand recording—along with audio, hotkey, save-location, and reserved-space settings in its Game Recording support page.
Set up a recording
- In Steam, open Steam → Settings → Game Recording.
- Choose background recording or on-demand recording, then set the maximum reserved disk space.
- Choose the audio sources, save location, and hotkeys.
- During play, use the Steam overlay timeline to review progress, add markers, play back, and trim footage.
- Export a clip you want to keep as a permanent video.
Background footage uses reserved temporary space. When that space fills, newer gameplay overwrites older footage; save or export wanted moments before they disappear. Steam’s documentation distinguishes timeline or raw recording data from exported video clips; see its recording details for the relevant options. Steam is convenient for Steam gameplay, but it is not a replacement for OBS if you need custom webcam scenes, production-oriented audio routing, or broader recording and streaming control.
8. Dedicated third-party screen recorders
Use them for
A simpler interface, a conventional screen-recording workflow, or bundled editing features may make a dedicated recorder a better fit than OBS for some users. Examples include Bandicam, Action!, and Movavi Screen Recorder.
Check the product’s current Windows support, trial limits, watermark or duration restrictions, license terms, codecs and hardware encoders, game-capture support, audio-track options, and replay-buffer features before choosing. Do not assume paid software produces better footage than OBS; its advantage may instead be convenience, bundled editing, or vendor support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Capture card: bring console or another PC into your recorder
Use it for
Console gameplay, dual-PC streaming or recording, or another HDMI source that software on the gaming PC cannot capture directly. For ordinary PC games already running on the recording computer, a capture card is usually unnecessary. OBS explains how to use a capture device as a Video Capture Device source in its game-capture FAQ.
Connect and test the source
- Connect the console or second PC’s HDMI output to the capture card’s input, then connect the card to the recording PC.
- In OBS, add a Video Capture Device source and select the card.
- Configure the available resolution, frame rate, and audio, then test synchronization and passthrough latency.
- Record a short sample and check for dropped frames, delay, and sound before relying on it for a session.
HDCP or other copy protection can prevent capture from some HDMI sources. Low-cost cards may have driver problems, audio delay, dropped frames, or limited resolution; inspect the exact device specifications rather than assuming a card supports a desired format or adds no latency. A Nintendo Switch Lite cannot use the ordinary docked HDMI capture workflow because it cannot be docked, as OBS notes in its capture FAQ.

Which OBS capture source should you try first?
- Game Capture: Start here for a typical 3D Windows game.
- Window Capture: Choose this when you want one specific application or Game Capture fails.
- Display Capture: Use it for broader compatibility, including emulators, browser games, and unusual launchers; remember it records everything visible on the selected monitor.
- Video Capture Device: Select this for a capture card or other external video source.
If a capture source produces a black screen, verify the selected game or display, try borderless mode, and make sure OBS and the game run on the same GPU. Switch capture sources, test without duplicate overlays, and check for DRM restrictions. OBS’s Windows gaming features troubleshooting guide covers possible conflicts involving Windows Game DVR and other encoder software. Updating drivers or the recorder can help, but it does not guarantee compatibility.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Record game audio and microphone audio deliberately
Game sound and commentary are separate sources. Before recording, confirm the intended playback device, select the right microphone, and check the meters while speaking and while the game plays. Decide whether Discord or other voice chat belongs in the recording, and make a short playback test; hearing the game live does not prove it was captured.
OBS offers more control when you want separate audio tracks for later editing. The GPU and platform recorders expose different audio choices, so check each app’s settings. Game Bar’s documented Capture settings include an option to record all computer audio. Protected content or application-specific restrictions can also affect what audio is captured.
Estimate storage before a long session
A useful estimate is required storage ≈ recording bitrate × duration ÷ 8, with extra room for container overhead and variation. These are calculations, not product specifications: at 20 Mbps, one hour is roughly 9 GB before overhead; at 50 Mbps, roughly 22.5 GB. Higher-resolution, higher-frame-rate, or less-compressed footage can require much more space.
Check free space and the recorder’s save location before a session. For Steam background recording, set a reserved-space limit and export clips you want to keep before the temporary footage is overwritten.
Choose a file format for reliability and workflow
MP4 is convenient for sharing and many editing workflows. For long OBS recordings, MKV is generally more resilient if recording is interrupted; you can remux it to MP4 afterward when needed. A container change affects file handling and compatibility, not the image quality of the captured frames. Neither format protects against every hardware, software, or storage failure, so test the full recording and playback workflow in advance.
Quick Recap
Why recordings stutter, stop, or have no sound
- Black or frozen image: Recheck the selected source, try borderless mode, confirm OBS and the game use the same GPU, then test another capture mode. DRM and overlays can also interfere.
- Missing microphone or game sound: Check the selected input and playback devices, audio-source settings, and meters; make a short test and listen back.
- Stuttering or dropped frames: Recording uses some combination of encoder capacity, CPU or GPU resources, and disk bandwidth. Test a lower resolution or frame rate, check available system headroom and storage performance, and avoid running several recorders at once.
- Recording stops or files will not open: Check free disk space and the chosen recording location. For OBS, consider an MKV workflow for long sessions, then remux if an MP4 is needed.
- Protected content will not capture: Some DRM-protected windows and HDMI sources block recording; a different recorder cannot necessarily bypass that restriction.
