March of Giants creative director Xavier Marquis says he moved from Rainbow Six Siege to the MOBA genre because he wanted another difficult creative challenge—not because he claimed he could reproduce Siege’s success. His new game aims to stand apart with 4v4 teams, commandable soldiers and structures that reshape the battlefield.
Why Xavier Marquis chose a MOBA after Rainbow Six Siege
Marquis is the original creative director of Rainbow Six Siege and the creative director of March of Giants. In an interview with Dot Esports published October 1, 2026, he described feeling a kind of vertigo after Siege’s success: “When you have a game with the success, and it’s competitive and esports-compatible, I reached all my dreams.” He said he wanted the adrenaline of attempting something difficult, and that he immediately thought of making a MOBA.
That is a more modest claim than saying he expects to replicate Siege’s commercial success. The interview establishes Marquis’s appetite for a hard new challenge; it does not establish a prediction that March of Giants will match Siege’s reach. Ubisoft has separately described the project as having potential to bring in new audiences and grow into a successful live competitive game, which is the publisher’s ambition rather than an outcome.
What is March of Giants?
March of Giants is a free-to-play, team-based MOBA in development at Ubisoft Montréal. Ubisoft describes its setting as fantastical and inspired by the First World War. Players take the role of Giants who fight directly while directing smaller Soldiers and deploying Battleworks—structures and units intended to alter the battlefield.

The World War I influence came from an unexpected observation. Marquis told Dot Esports that MOBA lane creeps repeatedly advance and die in the middle of a lane, which reminded him of the positional warfare of the First World War. That image helped connect familiar MOBA lane movement with the game’s trench-and-bunker visual language.
How its battlefield is meant to differ
Players can direct Soldiers
Soldiers are not just background waves in Ubisoft’s design pitch. The publisher says players can send them to scout, gather resources, capture targets, attack enemy Giants and assault fortifications. They are intended to create pressure across the lane and help teams pursue objectives, while players still control powerful Giants themselves.

Battleworks change the lane
Players can place Battleworks such as trenches and bunkers to affect combat and reshape terrain. Ubisoft says a destroyed placement location cannot be used again, making where a structure is built consequential beyond the immediate fight. The design aims to make the route through a lane evolve during a match rather than remain a fixed backdrop.
Four players per team and two Bastions
The Dot Esports preview described 4v4 teams, straight lanes and a victory objective of destroying two enemy Bastions. That is a smaller roster than the standard 5v5 format associated with many established MOBAs. Marquis said the reduced team size was intended to shorten matchmaking and make it easier to assemble most of a team without giving up strategic depth. The interview noted that ranked mode was still being worked on at the preview event.

Why Ubisoft says the MOBA market is difficult to enter
Ubisoft Montréal frames the genre as dominated by League of Legends and Dota 2, and says no new title had established itself alongside them in the preceding 15 years. That is the studio’s characterization of the market, not an independently audited history. Its stated answer is differentiation rather than imitation: a distinct setting, commandable Soldiers and map-changing structures.
Laure Guilbert, product marketing manager at Ubisoft Montréal, put the studio’s view plainly: “If you copy, you’re done. Why would a player leave an experience they love for a copy? It never works.” The design choices explain what Ubisoft hopes will make the game recognizable as its own; they do not yet show whether players will adopt it or whether its competitive systems will hold up.

Ubisoft’s December 2025 acquisition announcement said 98% of surveyed closed-alpha participants felt the game brought something new to the genre. That figure reflects Ubisoft’s survey of its closed-alpha participants, not a representative measure of the wider MOBA audience. The same announcement relayed an industry-analyst expectation that global MOBA revenues would roughly double by 2030, but it did not name the analysts or provide a methodology for the forecast.
When can you play March of Giants?
As of Ubisoft Montréal’s October 5, 2026 announcement, a public test was planned for October 7–18, 2026. The announcement directed interested players to the game’s Steam page to request access during the test period. Ubisoft also said further test sessions were planned for winter and spring, with early access planned for summer 2027. These are plans stated on October 5, 2026, not confirmation that the test or later releases have occurred; schedules and access details can change.

Ubisoft Montréal says Rainbow Six Siege has captivated more than 80 million players, but its October 2026 page does not define that metric or specify its measurement date; it should not be read as a directly comparable measure of the game’s future audience.
