Dressmaker began with Sabrina Becker’s love of clothing and dressmaking. According to the game’s official team announcement, that interest inspired her husband, Jonathan Hau-Yoon, to create the game. Becker later contributed to its dresses, aesthetics and playtesting when her health allowed.
What is Dressmaker about?
Dressmaker is a cozy dressmaking simulation from developer Cozy Lives and publisher Free Lives. Released on Steam on September 21, 2026, it lets players choose fabrics, arrange and cut patterns, sew garments and add decorations. The process draws on real dressmaking, but the creators aimed for a creative game rather than a full professional design simulation. Why did Jonathan Hau-Yoon make the game?
The official team account says Becker’s love of clothing inspired Hau-Yoon, identified as the game’s original creator, to make Dressmaker. The project grew from the couple’s interest in choosing and combining fabrics: Hau-Yoon described wanting to bring that appeal into a game without turning it into a demanding professional-design tool. How did sewing and Becker’s health shape the project?
In an interview published by Creative Bloq on August 6, 2026, Becker described a longstanding interest in dresses and fashion history. The interview reports that after an Ehlers-Danlos syndrome diagnosis, she was unable to pursue costume design professionally. Becker said the game gave her a way to reconnect with sewing: “I grew up sewing with my mom, so Dressmaker has been a really lovely way for me to reconnect with that.”

She also described the pleasure of combining creative elements into a personal design: “It’s really getting to put those things together and make your own vision that I find so satisfying, and we wanted to bring that through in the game.” These are Becker’s accounts of her experience and the project’s meaning; the game is a creative work, not a medical treatment or a substitute for a professional career. Who worked on Dressmaker?
Becker’s personal connection to the project is central to its origin, but it was made by a broader team. The official announcement names Hau-Yoon as original creator, Ruan as main programmer, and Sara as the artist responsible for most dress pieces, fabrics and accessories. It also credits other Free Lives colleagues and outside contributors. Becker helped design and curate dress pieces, aesthetics and the game’s overall feel, and playtested when her health allowed. What does the team say the game includes?
In its 2026 Steam launch announcement, the Dressmaker team described the game as containing approximately 35 hours of story commissions, excluding off-rack dresses, along with over 150 dress pieces, over 450 fabrics and over 350 accessories.
