Valve’s new Steam Controller pairs familiar thumbsticks with two trackpads, gyro controls and four assignable grip buttons, with Steam Input at its center. Dot Esports reports a U.S. price of $99 and a May 4, 2026 launch date; Valve’s product page supplies the controller’s features and specifications.
What is new about Valve’s Steam Controller?
This is a new Valve gamepad designed around Steam Input, not simply a reissue of the earlier Steam Controller. Valve says it is built to play Steam games across PC, laptop, Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame and other devices. The older model has a separate Steam Store page.
The defining difference is the mix of standard stick controls and input options often associated with mouse-and-keyboard play. Valve says the trackpads provide another way to control mouse-oriented games. That makes the layout potentially useful when a game’s menus, aiming or cursor work are awkward with sticks alone, though the product page does not establish comparative performance against other controllers.
What controls and features does it have?
- Two full-size TMR thumbsticks: magnetic sensing and capacitive touch, which can be used as part of Steam Input configurations.
- Two trackpads: 34.5 mm square pads with haptic feedback and configurable click strength.
- Motion input: a six-axis IMU for gyro controls.
- Extra inputs: four assignable grip buttons and two capacitive Grip Sense areas.
- Haptics: four motors in total—two in the trackpads and two high-output motors in the grips.
Valve describes the TMR sticks as intended to improve feel, responsiveness and long-term reliability. Those are the manufacturer’s claims, not independently verified durability or performance results.

How does the puck work, and how does the controller connect?
The included Steam Controller Puck serves two purposes: it is the 2.4GHz wireless transmitter and the controller’s magnetic charging interface. It also connects to a PC over USB-C, and Valve says one puck can support up to four controllers.
The controller can also connect over Bluetooth or use USB-C tethered play. Valve lists Bluetooth 4.2 as the minimum and recommends Bluetooth 5.0 or later. The puck is described as part of the controller package, not as a separately required purchase.
Does the Steam Controller work with Steam Deck, PC and macOS?
Valve lists PC, laptop, Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Steam Frame among the devices it is designed to support. Its broad claim is that it can play Steam games across those devices; it does not promise that every game or operating system will support every input method equally.

What are the battery life, size and weight?
Valve lists an 8.39 Wh lithium-ion battery and estimates 35+ hours of gameplay. This is a vendor-published figure, not an independent battery test; Valve notes that battery life is reduced when the controller is used for tracking Steam Frame.
| Item | Valve-listed specification |
|---|---|
| Controller dimensions | 111 × 159 × 57 mm |
| Controller weight | 292 g |
| Puck dimensions | 50 × 28 × 9 mm |
| Puck weight | 16 g |
These are Valve’s published specifications; the company notes that some specifications may change ahead of availability.

How much does the new Steam Controller cost, and when did it launch?
Dot Esports reports a U.S. price of $99 and a May 4, 2026 launch date. Its article, updated August 4, 2026, says Valve updated the official product page. The price and date are supported here by that secondary report; Valve’s product page is the source for the features and technical specifications above.
Valve’s November 12, 2025 hardware announcement had earlier said the new devices would begin shipping in early 2026. It named the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, EU and Australia, with Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan served through KOMODO. That announcement described an initial plan, not current stock or confirmed availability in every listed market. Regional pricing, discounts and present inventory are not established by these sources.

The useful distinction is its input range, rather than a proven performance advantage. A conventional stick-focused pad may be the simpler fit for games designed around standard gamepad controls. Valve’s controller adds trackpads, gyro, capacitive sensing and assignable rear buttons that can be configured through Steam Input, including for mouse-oriented games.
The product specifications do not establish head-to-head comfort, responsiveness, durability or value against other controllers. Weight and device compatibility are published, but comparative testing is not.
