A master’s thesis from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) explores whether Counter-Strike 2 match demos can help recognize the same player across multiple accounts. The researcher says the proof of concept found unreported smurf accounts, but the work is not a proven, CS2-wide system for identifying cheaters or issuing bans.
What the thesis proposes
The idea is to analyze mouse and keyboard behavior recorded in ordinary CS2 match demos, then compare those patterns across demos and accounts. The researcher, posting as Magga_, calls the resulting profile a “CS-fingerprint” and describes the question as whether a player’s keyboard and mouse use is consistent and distinctive enough to recognize them across demos. The researcher’s Reddit summary names flicks, counter-strafes, spray control and utility use as examples of behavior the system considers.
Because the method uses data already present in demos, it does not require a new physical device or measurement. The researcher wrote: “No new measurements are made, since the method only uses data Counter-Strike has recorded for years, just for a new purpose.” The available description does not specify the complete feature set or model architecture.
What “found smurfs” does—and does not—establish
The researcher reports that the method identified smurf accounts that had not been reported. That is a reported proof-of-concept result, not an independently verified performance finding: the available sources do not provide sample size, accuracy, false-positive rates or validation details. Dexerto’s contemporaneous report says the method had not been tested at the scale of CS2’s full player base.

Most importantly, recognizing a recurring player is not the same as proving that player cheated. A match between a banned player’s behavioral profile and a new account could be a reason for closer anti-cheat scrutiny or one piece of evidence in a case. It should not, by itself, be treated as proof of misconduct or as a basis for an automatic ban.
How this differs from VAC and Trusted Mode
The thesis explores an identity-linking signal: whether gameplay inputs look like they came from the same player across accounts. Valve’s published descriptions of VAC instead focus on detecting third-party software that gives a player an advantage, while Trusted Mode is intended to reduce accidental software injection. These approaches address different questions and use different signals.

Valve’s descriptions do not establish that it has adopted or tested this thesis. Steam Support’s VAC overview explains its stated approach, and its Trusted Mode guidance describes the mode’s purpose. The available sources offer no head-to-head benchmark comparing those measures with behavioral account matching.
Why a behavioral match could be wrong
Shared accounts
If several people use one account, its demos may contain different players’ input patterns. That makes account-level behavior harder to interpret and could complicate a comparison with another account.

Identity is not misconduct
Even a reliable match would indicate that two accounts may belong to the same person; it would not establish what that person did in a particular match. Any enforcement use would need separate evidence of cheating and a fair review process.

The sources available for this report do not establish the thesis’s exact title, dataset size, evaluation design or error rates. Without those details, it is not possible to judge how reliably the method separates one player from another, how often it might link the wrong accounts, or whether it could work in live enforcement. The claim that it could help identify recurring players is therefore a research proposal—not evidence that cheaters can now be banned across accounts.
