Jason Fuchs is writing the film. That mix gives the project a clearer identity, but Bay is not confirmed as director, and no plot or release date has been announced.
What’s confirmed about the next Transformers movie?
According to TheWrap’s October 6, 2026 report, Spielberg will executive produce and oversee the property’s creative direction with longtime producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Variety reported on October 7 that Spielberg will executive produce and oversee creative aspects of the live-action film with di Bonaventura.
Jason Fuchs is writing the movie, and TheWrap reports that its story is set in modern day. Plot details remain under wraps. Neither trade report establishes the movie’s release date, cast, or continuity, so claims that it is definitely a sequel or reboot go beyond what has been reported.
Is Michael Bay directing the next Transformers movie?
Not yet. TheWrap reports that Bay is in early talks to direct, which signals interest but is not a confirmed appointment. Variety’s October 7 report said no director had been announced and did not confirm Bay’s role. The careful reading is that Bay is a possibility, not the director of record.

Why Spielberg’s return could matter
Spielberg’s return alongside Bay’s possible involvement points toward a familiar creative pairing from the franchise’s earlier live-action era. Variety says the intention is to pursue a tone similar to earlier Transformers films. That could give the new film a recognizable direction for viewers who associate the series with those installments.
That is a promising setup, not proof that the movie will solve a particular problem or satisfy fans. The reports do not establish audience consensus, guarantee quality, or support a box-office prediction. The meaningful news is that the franchise is bringing back experienced creative figures while the film’s story and final directing choice remain unsettled.

Who is writing the new Transformers movie?
Jason Fuchs is writing. TheWrap first reported his attachment to an untitled Transformers script on June 11, 2026; its later report and Variety’s October coverage also identify him as the writer. The script’s plot has not been disclosed.
When does the next Transformers movie come out?
No release date is established in the October 6–7, 2026 reports from TheWrap and Variety. The film is in development, but there is not enough public information in those reports to give a theatrical window.

Don’t confuse it with the 1986 movie’s anniversary event
The untitled new live-action film is separate from the 40th-anniversary theatrical return of the 1986 animated Transformers movie. Fathom Entertainment’s July 24, 2026 announcement describes a restored 4K presentation, an exclusive post-credits animated short, and theatrical collectibles. Hasbro also announced the separate event on September 17, 2026. Those anniversary screenings are not the release of the new film.

The new movie should also be kept distinct from the separately discussed Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover. Variety’s October 7 report says that crossover will not move forward. That does not establish the story or continuity of this newly reported live-action film.
Rank #4
The franchise has grossed more than $5.4 billion worldwide, according to Variety’s October 7, 2026 report. That is a historical franchise total, not a forecast for this movie.
