Deep Pause is a pre-beta project intended to let Steam Deck players pause one game, play another, and later restore the first session without closing it. Its creator says it moves most of a game’s memory from RAM and GPU-backed memory to the Deck’s NVMe storage, then restores it when needed. The project’s reported memory savings are promising, but they are creator-reported tests—not independent verification—and Deep Pause was not a released, vetted Decky plugin as of October 2026.
What Deep Pause is trying to do
Steam Deck’s built-in suspend puts the device to sleep and lets a player return to a game. Deep Pause has a different ambition: preserve a running game session while making room to launch or resume another one. In principle, that could make it possible to keep multiple games’ sessions available without leaving all of their memory resident at once.
The project creator describes the intended process as keeping the game process intact, offloading most of its memory to NVMe storage, and restoring that state when the player returns. Steam Deck HQ reported on October 5, 2026 that the plugin was upcoming, not yet public, and aimed to reclaim CPU/GPU use and most memory so another game could be played without closing the first. The report characterized the expected retained memory as around 5–8%, or roughly 92–95% reclaimed; this is an outlet’s report of the project, not an independent measurement.
What the reported memory figures mean
In a 2026 Reddit post, the project creator reported an average of 92.7% of physical memory reclaimed across multiple real-game titles, and a maximum of 95.9% in some tests, leaving slightly more than 100 MB resident. These are pre-beta figures reported by the creator. No independent benchmark or reliability results are established, so they should not be treated as verified performance in everyday use.

Memory reclamation is only one part of a quick-resume feature. The project creator identifies memory offload, restoration, recovery from problems, and differences between games as difficult reliability work. A useful real-world assessment would also need to establish how restoration behaves for different games, including input, audio, networking, and failed restores. The available reporting does not provide independent head-to-head speed, battery, or reliability comparisons.
How it differs from SteamOS suspend and existing pause plugins
| Approach | What it does | Memory and restoration | Status and caveats |
|---|---|---|---|
| SteamOS suspend | Suspends the Deck so the player can return to a game. | Not described by Valve as a way to offload several complete game sessions for rapid switching. | Valve says Wi-Fi disconnects while suspended and recommends backing up save files before suspension. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ. |
| Decky Pause Games | Sends SIGSTOP to pause a game process and SIGCONT to resume it. | Stops CPU execution but leaves used RAM and VRAM allocated. | Its documentation warns that some games can misbehave after repeated pauses or lose input after resuming. Pause Games documentation. |
| DeckSuspender | Suspends and resumes apps. | Processes keep their RAM allocation; it is not a memory-offload design. | The project warns that not every program works. DeckSuspender project. |
| Deep Pause | Intends to preserve a game session while making it possible to play another. | Its stated goal is to offload most memory to NVMe and restore it later. | Pre-beta and not yet public in October 2026 reporting; independent compatibility and reliability results are not established. Project creator’s post; Steam Deck HQ, October 5, 2026. |
The key distinction is that a process pause can stop a game from running without freeing its memory. Deep Pause’s proposed offload-and-restore approach could leave more memory available for another session, but it also introduces harder restoration and compatibility problems. Steam Deck HQ noted that the project’s low-level access needs review; it was not available for vetting at the time of its report.

What Deep Pause is not
Steam Cloud Dynamic Sync handles game files for games that support it: Steam can sync changed files around suspend and cross-device use, then notify the game when files change. That is separate from saving a complete running process state to storage and restoring it later. Valve’s Steam Cloud documentation describes the file-sync feature, not a multi-game memory checkpoint.
Nor should Deep Pause be confused with a confirmed SteamOS feature. Valve describes quick suspend and resume as part of the Deck experience, but that does not establish support for keeping multiple game sessions offloaded and ready to switch between.

What Steam Deck owners should know now
- Availability: The project was described as pre-beta and not yet public in October 2026. No release date is established.
- Compatibility: No reviewed source establishes support for particular Steam Deck models, including LCD or OLED editions, or a dependable list of compatible games.
- Storage requirements: NVMe is part of the project’s stated design, but no reviewed source establishes that users need to upgrade their storage.
- Safety and recovery: Restore reliability and recovery behavior remain unresolved project challenges, not independently validated features.
- Save protection: Save often. Valve’s Steamworks FAQ says, “The primary consideration is that Steam Deck will disconnect from Wi-Fi while suspended, so we recommend that you back up your save files before suspending.” A third-party pre-beta tool adds another reason not to rely on a suspended session as the only copy of progress.
For now, Deep Pause is best understood as an ambitious attempt to extend the Deck’s familiar suspend experience into multi-game session switching—not a feature players can count on using today. Its reported memory reclamation figures are a useful sign of what the creator is pursuing, but release status, compatibility, recovery, and independent reliability remain unestablished.
