Battlefield REDSEC launched on October 28, 2025, alongside Battlefield 6 Season One. It is a free-to-play standalone experience, so owning Battlefield 6 is not required. The launch lineup included a 100-player battle royale on Fort Lyndon, the round-based elimination mode Gauntlet, and Portal’s custom experiences. Those are confirmed launch details—not evidence that the modes played well. Without firsthand match notes, it would be misleading to call this an impressions review or claim anything about REDSEC’s pacing, gunfights, stability, balance, or reception.
What launched with REDSEC?
Electronic Arts announced REDSEC as a free-to-play Battlefield experience on October 28, 2025, the same day Battlefield 6 Season One began. EA’s launch announcement framed it as a new battle royale, a competitive squad mode, and additional ways to use Portal. The announcement establishes what EA released and how it described the launch; it does not independently establish the quality of the matches.
Battlefield 6 itself had launched on October 10, 2025. REDSEC’s release therefore arrived less than three weeks later, as part of Season One’s first phase, Rogue Operations. EA said that phase also brought Battlefield 6 a new map, weapons, and Strikepoint, a 4v4 mode in which each player has one life.
Is Battlefield REDSEC free to play, and do you need Battlefield 6?
REDSEC was presented as a free-to-play standalone download; you do not need to buy Battlefield 6 to access it. EA’s REDSEC community update and launch announcement also state that an EA account and persistent internet connection are required. Depending on platform and region, an applicable platform account or subscription may also be required. Check the current platform store listing for the rules that apply where you play.

EA listed PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, the EA app, and Epic Games Store for Battlefield 6 at launch. PlayStation’s product page separately identifies REDSEC as standalone and free-to-play. Battlefield 6 is a paid game; its purchase is optional for REDSEC, not a prerequisite.
How many players are in a REDSEC match?
At launch, REDSEC’s battle royale supported up to 100 players in either of these formats, according to EA’s community update:
- 25 squads of four
- 50 duos
These are launch-format specifications, not a statement about current queues, player counts, or matchmaking conditions.
What modes were in REDSEC at launch?
Battle royale on Fort Lyndon
Fort Lyndon was REDSEC’s launch map. EA described it as a Southern California setting with beaches, urban centers, military compounds, and suburban neighborhoods, and called it the largest Battlefield map at launch. The Season One briefing also covers the map’s setting.

- Battlefield 6 Phantom Edition includes Phantom Squad, Battlefield Pro Token, Shrouded & Drop Shadow Weapon Package, Chimera Vehicle Skin, Phantom XP Boost Set and more
- All-out war, fast-paced close-quarters combat, tactical destruction – Welcome to the definitive Battlefield experience
- THE NEW STANDARD OF FPS COMBAT: With overhauled gunplay and tactical movement, from crouch sprint to drag and revive, every shot and movement is more instinctual and precise
- MORE WAYS TO BATTLE: Victory, however you envision it; Seize glory in iconic, large-scale modes including Conquest, Breakthrough, and Rush; Fight in iconic locations all over the world including Cairo, Brooklyn, Gibraltar and more
EA’s community update lists helicopters, boats, and golf carts among the vehicles and describes tactical destruction as a way to breach walls, destroy buildings, and use rubble for cover. It also outlines Battlefield-style classes adapted for battle royale: Assault, for example, retained a ladder for vertical flanks, while Support carried extra armor plates and ammunition. The publisher described missions and hidden intel caches as ways to level Training Paths that unlocked or upgraded gear.
Those features suggest several questions a real match review should answer: whether destruction opens useful routes or leaves players exposed, whether class differences shape squad decisions, and whether missions and Training Paths offer worthwhile choices amid the pressure to survive. EA’s descriptions alone cannot answer how often those systems mattered or whether they improved a match.
Gauntlet
Gauntlet was a round-based elimination mode. EA’s launch announcement described eight teams of four competing through missions with five-minute windows. Those figures describe the launch format; they do not establish how the mode felt in play or whether its rounds produced close, varied matches.
Portal
Portal let players create or discover custom experiences, according to EA’s launch materials. The announcement establishes its presence in the launch lineup, but not the range, quality, or popularity of the experiences available at that time.

What can—and can’t—be called an early impression?
A useful impressions piece needs observations from actual matches. The launch materials contain no firsthand play notes and no independent evidence about REDSEC’s gunplay, match pacing, audio, performance, matchmaking, balance, or player reception. They also provide no independent player-count or review-score figure for REDSEC. Without that evidence, claims that REDSEC feels faster, more stable, more destructive, or better balanced than another battle royale would be invented.
For players deciding whether to try it, the defensible takeaway is narrower: REDSEC arrived as a free-to-play entry point built around Battlefield’s classes, vehicles, and destructible environments, with a separate elimination mode and Portal. Whether those ideas translate into satisfying matches depends on firsthand play and can change with updates after launch.
Season One launch extras
At launch, EA described the Battlefield 6 Battle Pass as having 100 tiers, six paths, and ten prestige tiers, alongside a premium BF Pro tier and premium store content. These are historical Season One launch details, not a claim about the current season’s offer. REDSEC itself remained a separate free-to-play download; access to Battlefield 6’s paid content was not required to try it.
