Buy only if what you learned—and the remaining unknowns—still justify the full price to you.
Start with what you need the demo to prove
Before launching the demo, decide what would make the full game worthwhile for you. That might be a particular gameplay loop, difficulty level, story tone, multiplayer mode, accessibility feature or typical session length. This gives you a personal test instead of asking whether the demo is simply “good.”
Steam describes demos as free opportunities to try a game before buying it. Their size and scope vary; they are generally a small playable portion meant to demonstrate some core mechanics. Valve’s Steamworks guidance says customers use demos to make purchase decisions and advises developers to make them high-quality and representative. What to evaluate while playing
Does the core loop hold your attention?
Focus on the basic actions and decisions you expect to repeat: aiming and moving, exploring, building, managing resources, solving puzzles or coordinating with teammates. Ask whether those actions are enjoyable enough to keep doing. A polished tutorial or opening scene tells you about the part you played; it cannot establish that every later chapter or system will feel the same.

Does the game feel comfortable on your setup?
Notice practical friction as well as enjoyment: whether the controls suit you, the interface is readable, the camera behaves well, and performance is acceptable on your PC. These are useful personal checks, not an official Steam scoring system. A demo only tests the scenes and conditions it contains, so it cannot prove how the full game will run in areas it does not include.
Does it include the feature you care about?
Check whether the demo actually lets you try your must-have feature, such as multiplayer, a specific control option or an accessibility setting. If that feature is absent, count it as unknown—not as evidence that it works well or badly in the full game.

Keep a clear list of what remains unknown
Demos are limited samples. The full game may contain progression systems, story chapters, modes, difficulty options or endgame activities that the demo does not show. Write down the important gaps and judge them as unknowns rather than filling them in with assumptions. If a missing feature is essential to your decision, look for reliable information about that feature before paying.
Check requirements and save continuity
Compare your PC with the full game’s system requirements before buying. Steam lists not meeting hardware requirements as one reason a player might request a refund, but a demo cannot test performance in content it omits. Check the game’s store page for its current requirements and consider whether your PC meets them.

Do not assume demo progress will carry over. Steam lets developers configure demo and full-game applications to share cloud storage, which can allow a player to continue a demo save after buying the full game. It is optional developer setup. Look for a specific save-transfer note for the game. Steamworks documentation explains demo save sharing
Decide whether the evidence justifies the price
Make the call against the full game’s price, not just the fun of playing a free sample. Ask yourself:

- Did the demo show enough of the gameplay I want to repeat?
- Did the controls, interface and performance work for me?
- Are any important features still untested?
- Am I comfortable paying the full price with those unknowns?
If the demo confirms your must-haves and the unanswered questions do not change the value for you, buying may make sense. If a crucial mode, system or performance concern remains unresolved, waiting for more information is a reasonable decision.

For games purchased on Steam, the general policy says you can request a refund within 14 days of purchase if you have played for less than two hours. Steam counts online, offline and shared-library playtime toward the two-hour limit. The policy also notes that details and additional consumer rights can vary by jurisdiction, so check the current terms that apply to you. Do not treat the refund window as a substitute for evaluating the game: it has specific conditions, and it applies to Steam rather than every PC storefront.
