Which sports are different?

Sports unique to Wii Sports

Baseball and Boxing are the clearest reasons to choose the Wii original. Neither appears in Nintendo Switch Sports’ current sport list.

Sports unique to Nintendo Switch Sports

Switch Sports adds Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, Badminton, and Chambara, a swordplay sport. If one of those is the main attraction, the Switch game is the only option in this pair.

Golf is in both, but Switch Sports added it later

Golf is shared, though it was not part of Nintendo Switch Sports at launch. Nintendo added it in a free update on November 29, 2022. Nintendo said the mode includes 21 holes from the Wii Sports series; the update also added Survival Golf online for up to eight players. Nintendo: Golf update announcement

How the motion controls and setup differ

Wii Sports uses the Wii Remote

In Wii Sports, players swing the Wii Remote like the sports equipment they are using: a racket, bat, club, or bowling ball. Boxing uses a Wii Remote and Nunchuk, one for each glove. Nintendo UK: Wii Sports

Nintendo Switch Sports Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
  • Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
  • Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
  • Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
  • Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online

Nintendo Switch Sports uses Joy-Con

Nintendo Switch Sports uses Joy-Con motion controls. Its physical edition includes a Leg Strap accessory for some Soccer play. The Leg Strap is not required for the rest of the game; Nintendo says buyers of the digital game can purchase the strap separately. Nintendo advises players to leave adequate room and wear wrist straps while playing. Nintendo: Nintendo Switch Sports · Nintendo: Nintendo Switch Sports availability and accessory details

Local multiplayer and online play

Both games support local multiplayer. Nintendo lists Wii Sports for one to four players and Nintendo Switch Sports for one to four players on one system. Those overall player counts do not mean every sport or mode necessarily uses the maximum in the same way.

Switch Sports also offers online competition, including matchmaking and rewards. Online features require a Nintendo Switch Online membership, a Nintendo Account, and internet access; availability may vary by country. Nintendo’s cited materials do not establish a comparable online mode for the original Wii Sports, so it should not be treated as an equivalent online option. Which one should you play?

  • Pick Wii Sports if you own a Wii and want Baseball, Boxing, or the original five-sport collection.
  • Pick Nintendo Switch Sports if you own a Switch and want Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, Badminton, Chambara, or online competition.
  • If Golf is the deciding factor, both have it. Switch Sports’ Golf arrived in a free 2022 update and includes 21 holes from the Wii Sports series.
  • If you are deciding what to buy, start with the console you own: the games are not interchangeable. If online play matters, factor in Switch Sports’ Nintendo Switch Online membership requirement.

These are feature-based recommendations, not a claim that one game is objectively more fun or has more accurate motion controls. Nintendo’s product information identifies what each game includes but does not provide a controlled comparison of enjoyment, control accuracy, or value.
