If your wet-dry vacuum is leaving a film or traces of water, start by unplugging it, emptying a full tank, and checking that the float moves freely. Then follow your exact model’s wet-pickup filter instructions, clear blockages in the hose and nozzle, and reseat the lid and connections. Filter setups vary by model, so don’t remove or install a filter based on another vacuum’s instructions.
Start with safety and the recovery tank
- Switch off and unplug the vacuum. Do this before opening the tank or inspecting any part of the suction path.
- Empty the recovery tank if it is full. A full tank can activate the float shutoff and stop airflow. On Victor WD30/WD60 models, the float cuts off airflow at capacity and does not return until the vacuum is switched off and emptied; check the WD30/WD60 manual for those models’ procedure.
- Check the float while the machine is off. Make sure it is clean and can move freely. If it is stuck in the shutoff position, airflow may be restricted. Do not force it.
RIDGID lists a full tank, float issues, filter problems, blockages, loose connections, and a damaged hose among possible causes of poor suction in its wet/dry vac troubleshooting guidance.
Check the filter using your model’s wet-pickup instructions
A dirty or wet filter can reduce performance, but there is no universal filter setup for wet pickup. Use the manual for the exact make and model, and do not run the vacuum in a configuration that conflicts with it.
- BISSELL Model 2035: BISSELL says to install both the fabric and mesh filters for wet and dry cleaning. If washed, both should dry completely before they are reinstalled. See BISSELL’s Model 2035 support instructions.
- Victor WD30/WD60: The manual says to remove the cloth filter for wet pickup and check that the float moves freely. Those instructions apply to the named models, not to wet-dry vacuums generally: Victor WD30/WD60 manual.
- Kärcher models: Kärcher advises allowing a cartridge filter to dry if water is in it after suction shuts off during wet cleaning. Consult the Kärcher FAQs and your model’s instructions.
If the filter is visibly clogged, clean it only as the manufacturer directs. Replace it only with a compatible part for your model.

Clear the hose, inlet, and nozzle
A blockage anywhere between the tank inlet and the pickup head can weaken suction enough to leave water on the floor. With the vacuum unplugged, inspect the tank inlet, hose, wand, nozzle, and attachment. Separate removable components and clear any debris; BISSELL recommends checking components individually when its Model 2035 has no suction. Avoid forcing a sharp object through a hose, as it could puncture it. RIDGID also recommends checking the hose for blockages in its troubleshooting guidance.
Check connections, lid, and seals
Air leaks can undermine suction. Check that the hose connection and powerhead or lid are properly seated, and tighten the tank drain cap. Inspect the hose and seals for damage; replace a torn hose or defective seal with a compatible part identified for your model. RIDGID and Kärcher both identify connection, hose, or seal issues as possible sources of reduced suction: RIDGID and Kärcher.

If your machine has a squeegee, inspect the recovery system
This check is for scrubber-style or other squeegee-equipped floor machines, not every canister wet-dry vacuum. Look for debris under the squeegee blade, a blockage in the recovery passage or squeegee neck, worn blade edges, or incorrect blade adjustment. Clean the passage and blade, then use your machine’s manual for adjustment or replacement instructions. The Pacific Floorcare S20 manual covers recovery and squeegee checks for that scrubber; Victor’s WD30/WD60 manual covers its squeegee tool.
Tell a canister vac from a floor scrubber
The same symptom can come from different parts, depending on the type of machine. Use this comparison to focus your checks, then follow the exact model’s instructions.

When to stop troubleshooting
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if suction remains poor after the basic checks, the motor or turbine appears faulty, or you find a safety concern. If an older vacuum has a burning or electrical smell, RIDGID advises turning it off and unplugging it immediately; do not keep running it to test whether suction returns.
