1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo make a PC game demo run more smoothly, start with a repeatable performance baseline, then change one graphics setting at a time. Try resolution or resolution scale first, followed by demanding quality options; compare average FPS with 1% lows, image quality in motion, and responsiveness. There is no single best preset for every demo or PC.
How do I get better FPS in a PC demo?
Use the same gameplay section or built-in benchmark for each comparison. Record your resolution, preset, average FPS, and 1% low FPS before changing anything. Steam Support says that “Manually modifying your game’s video options can increase your FPS,” but the result depends on the particular game and system.
Change one option, repeat the same test, and note what changed. If you alter several settings together, it becomes difficult to tell which change helped—or which one made the picture worse.
Read more than the average
Average FPS gives an overall rate, but it can hide uneven delivery. NVIDIA FrameView defines 1% low FPS as the average of the slowest one percent of frames; it can help reveal stutter that an average does not show. Compare the same measurements under the same conditions rather than treating one run as definitive.

Which graphics settings should I lower first?
Resolution and resolution scale
If frame rate is poor, test a lower output resolution or resolution scale. This reduces image detail, so check whether the improvement is worth the softer picture. Steam’s general troubleshooting guidance notes that reducing video resolution may help older or integrated graphics, but it does not guarantee a gain for every demo.
Quality options
If resolution alone is not a satisfactory trade-off, reduce demanding graphics-quality options one at a time. The most effective option varies by game, graphics hardware, and current settings. AMD similarly cautions in its Radeon settings support article that finding a balance between visual quality and performance may require multiple adjustments.
Upscaling
If the demo offers an upscaler, compare it with native rendering at the same output resolution. Look at a moving scene as well as a still image: motion can expose softness, shimmering, or other image changes that are easy to miss in a screenshot. No one upscaler or mode is established as best across all demos.
How should I compare two settings?
Use the same scene and compare the qualities that matter to your play style, not just the largest FPS number.

- Average FPS: the overall frame rate during the test.
- 1% low FPS or frame-time behavior: whether delivery remains consistent or has noticeable dips and stutter.
- Image quality in motion: whether the scene stays clear while moving and turning.
- Responsiveness: whether controls feel immediate; latency readings can help where supported.
- Display artifacts: whether tearing or other synchronization issues appear.
Should I turn VSync on or off?
VSync concerns synchronization between rendered frames and the display. Steam notes that disabling it may cause tearing or artifacts; AMD explains that, for DirectX and Vulkan games, VSync is controlled in the game’s graphics settings. Try the available in-game options with your actual display and compare both smoothness and responsiveness. The right choice depends on whether you prioritize tear-free output, frame rate, or the feel of input in that setup.
How can an overlay help diagnose a problem?
Use an overlay to identify a likely constraint rather than guessing at upgrades or settings. Steam’s performance monitor can show frame-generation breakdowns and warn when game video-memory use exceeds available video memory—a condition likely to hurt performance. NVIDIA FrameView can report average and 1% low FPS, PC latency, GPU and CPU utilization, and temperatures.
Not every metric is available in every game. FrameView notes that some latency readings require a supported game and may not appear in menus, so collect them during supported gameplay rather than assuming a missing value means there is no latency.

Start with the game’s own options and the driver support information for your hardware. If you use vendor controls, make a single change and restore defaults if results get worse. AMD’s Radeon software documentation covers application profiles, shader cache, filtering controls, and Frame Rate Target Control (FRTC).

FRTC can reduce GPU power use, heat, and fan noise when a game renders substantially more frames than the display needs, but it applies only to supported hardware and API cases. AMD says the application must be restarted for changes to take effect. Treat it as a targeted control, not a universal performance fix.
How do I tell a settings issue from a hardware limit?
Check the evidence before spending money. High video-memory use relative to available memory can point to memory pressure; Steam’s monitor guidance supports that diagnosis, not a blanket recommendation to upgrade. A GPU with more video memory is worth considering only if monitoring and the game’s requirements indicate that this is the constraint.
Other causes call for different remedies: a CPU limit, shader compilation, background processes, a demo bug, or poor optimization will not necessarily improve by lowering a GPU setting or buying a graphics card. No particular demo or PC configuration has been benchmarked here, so actual gains and ideal settings remain game- and system-dependent.
