Nintendo Switch Sports uses Joy-Con motion controls across eight sports: Tennis, Volleyball, Soccer, Chambara, Badminton, Bowling, Golf, and Basketball. Start with Free Practice or the in-game How to Play guides, then focus on timing and positioning rather than swinging harder. The exact controller setup varies by sport, and the Switch Pro Controller is not supported.

What sports are in Nintendo Switch Sports?

Nintendo’s current lineup lists eight sports: Tennis, Volleyball, Soccer, Chambara swordplay, Badminton, Bowling, Golf, and Basketball. Older launch coverage may list six; Golf and Basketball were added later. Check Nintendo’s current game page for the present lineup.

How do the controls work?

The game reads motion from compatible Joy-Con controllers. You swing, move, or aim the controller to perform actions, but there is no single control arrangement that applies to every sport. Supported Joy-Con and Joy-Con 2 configurations and play styles vary by sport; Nintendo says Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible. Before starting, consult Nintendo Support’s controller and play-style information for the sport and mode you plan to use.

How to learn the controls before a match

Use Free Practice to get comfortable with movement and timing, and select How to Play for sport-specific guidance. In Soccer, the practice route is Play Locally > Soccer > One Player > Free Practice. The How to Play option is in the Options gear menu. These are useful places to learn how your controller motion affects the kick before playing against others.

Beginner tips for each sport

Tennis

For a faster serve, begin your swing early enough to meet the ball near its highest point. Treat this as a timing target to practice, not a guaranteed shortcut; the contact point takes repetition to learn.

Volleyball

To time a quicker spike, jump slightly before your teammate sets the ball. The goal is to have your player and the ball meet in the air at about the same time.

  • Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
  • Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
  • Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online

Soccer

  • In Four-on-Four, hold ZR while kicking to pass.
  • Use the minimap to keep track of the ball, teammates, and opponents. If your team’s goal is unguarded, consider moving back to cover it.
  • With two-handed controls, use Free Practice to see how controller movement changes kick direction before relying on it in a match.

Badminton

For a fast smash, use a gentle downward swing as the shuttlecock starts to descend. Holding ZR or ZL while swinging performs a Drop Shot. Mixing Drop Shots with other shots can make your play less predictable.

Bowling

Use the on-screen prompts to reposition or rotate before throwing. The lane arrows can help you aim; start with a controlled, straight throw and work on a hook after you are comfortable with your line.

Chambara

The three sword types reward different approaches: the standard Sword has the strongest strike, Charge Swords can build a Charge Strike by guarding, and Twin Swords can perform a Spinning Strike. Choose based on whether you want a straightforward strong hit, a charged attack, or a spinning move.

Golf

Check the wind meter and adjust your shot for the conditions. Wind can move the ball, and higher shots are affected more.

Do you need the Leg Strap?

No. The Leg Strap is optional for Nintendo Switch Sports overall and is relevant to Soccer, including Soccer Shoot-Out and Leg-Strap Mode. Nintendo says the physical game package in the market covered by its beginner guide includes the strap; it may also be sold separately, and the strap included with Ring Fit Adventure can be used. Package contents and availability can differ by market, so check the local listing before buying.

Local and online play

Nintendo describes both local play with friends and online play. An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online play; local play does not carry that online-membership requirement. Player counts and supported controller arrangements differ by sport and mode, so confirm the details in Nintendo’s support information before organizing a group.

Play safely

  • Attach and wear the Joy-Con wrist straps while playing.
  • Leave enough clear space around you and other players to swing the controllers safely.

Nintendo’s current play tips include reminders about wrist straps and giving yourself room.
