Nintendo Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, with some capacity reserved for system use. That may be enough if you keep a small number of digital games installed; if you want a larger library ready to play, add a microSD Express card. Nintendo supports compatible cards up to 2 TB, but ordinary microSD cards from the original Switch cannot store or load Switch 2 digital games. For many players, 512 GB is a practical expansion size; choose 256 GB for a modest library or consider 1 TB if you want to download and archive less often.

How much storage does Nintendo Switch 2 have?

Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage for Switch 2 and notes that some of that capacity is reserved for system use. The full stated amount is therefore not available for games. Nintendo’s specification describes this storage as the place where digital games and save data are stored.

Whether 256 GB is enough depends on how many downloadable games, updates, and add-ons you want installed at the same time. Game sizes vary widely and can change with updates or editions, so there is no reliable single “average game size” to use for planning. Check the relevant software page or game packaging for its required space; Nintendo’s physical-software guidance says the requirement is listed there.

Does Switch 2 work with a regular microSD card?

No. Nintendo says Switch 2 is compatible only with microSD Express cards. A standard microSD card that worked in the original Switch cannot store or load Switch 2 digital games, even if it fits the card slot. Nintendo supports compliant microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance also says an internet system update is required the first time you use a microSD Express card.

#1 Best Overall
Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

An old standard microSD card can still be useful for importing captured screenshots and videos to Switch 2 system memory, but it cannot be used for Switch 2 games or game saves.

Which microSD Express capacity should you buy?

Choose based on the size of the library you want installed simultaneously, your budget, and how willing you are to archive games and download them again later. These are practical recommendations, not Nintendo requirements.

Card capacity Best fit What is documented
256 GB A modest digital library or someone comfortable archiving games. SanDisk lists this capacity in its licensed Switch 2 card range. Its estimate of nine games is a manufacturer estimate, not a promise for every game or the usable space on every console.
512 GB A middle-ground option for keeping more digital games installed. SanDisk lists this capacity; Lexar Play Pro is also reported in 512 GB. A July 2026 Tom’s Guide review describes one reviewer’s use of the Lexar card, not a controlled comparison or a guarantee of results.
1 TB A large digital library or less frequent archiving and redownloading. SanDisk and the cited Tom’s Guide review report 1 TB options. Check current local price and availability before buying.
Up to 2 TB For a very large library, if you find a suitable card. Nintendo’s supported ceiling is 2 TB. The cited product examples establish 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB models, not the availability of a particular 2 TB retail card.

For many players, a 512 GB microSD Express card is a balanced choice: it adds meaningful room without assuming you need the largest capacity. The right choice can still vary with local prices, so compare the cost per gigabyte, the seller’s reliability and warranty, and whether the exact model is microSD Express.

Which cards are documented for Switch 2?

SanDisk microSD Express Card for Nintendo Switch 2

SanDisk’s officially licensed card range includes 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB capacities. The manufacturer says the cards are designed, tested, and approved for Switch 2. Its stated estimates—nine games on 256 GB, 18 on 512 GB, and 36 on 1 TB—are estimates rather than guarantees; actual game sizes and available capacity vary. See the SanDisk product data sheet.

TechRadar’s guide names SanDisk its best overall pick and PNY as a budget option, based on its editorial testing and ranking. That is an independent buying-guide judgment, not Nintendo certification; recommendations and stock can change.

What can go on a microSD Express card?

When a microSD Express card is inserted, Nintendo says it becomes the default save location for downloadable software. Downloaded games, updates, and DLC can be stored on the card. Screenshots and captured video can be stored on or moved between internal storage and the card.

Game saves are different: they remain in System Memory and cannot be copied or saved to a microSD Express card. Buying a larger card therefore adds room for software and captures, but it does not increase the space used for save data. See Nintendo’s microSD Express FAQ.

Can you use more than one card?

Nintendo recommends using one card. Software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto one card. If you run out of space, Nintendo’s guidance is to copy the data to a larger microSD Express card rather than build a library across several cards.

How large are Switch 2 games?

Individual titles illustrate why a universal estimate is unreliable. A Tom’s Guide article dated July 9, 2026 reports 60 GB for Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, 90.5 GB for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and 3.8 GB for Blue Prince. These are publication-reported examples at that time, not permanent specifications or a representative average; versions and updates can change file sizes. Check the individual game’s official software page or package before deciding how much room to leave.
