On PlayStation, privacy controls are tied to your account, while installed games, saves, and captures are managed separately on each console. On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy; on PS4, open Settings > Account Management > Privacy Settings. Review the specific audience for profile details, activity, and messages, then check where your saves are stored before deleting game files.

Where to find PlayStation privacy settings

Sony’s US support guide lists separate console paths and an online option. Because privacy settings are associated with your PlayStation account, Sony says changes are reflected across your devices. Available labels and controls can vary by platform and account type. PlayStation Support: privacy settings.

  • PS5: Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy. Choose a preset or select View and Customize Your Privacy Settings to adjust individual controls.
  • PS4: Go to Settings > Account Management > Privacy Settings. You may need to sign in again.
  • Web: Sign in to Account Management, open Privacy settings, choose a feature, and select Edit.

On PS5, the available areas include real name and profile picture, friends and profile information, activity and gaming history, hiding games from other players, communication and multiplayer, blocked players, and crossplay game invitations. Sony lists four presets: Social and Open, Team Player, Friend Focused, and Solo and Focused. Treat a preset as a starting point and inspect its individual controls rather than assuming it changes every privacy setting the way you want.

Choose who can see your activity or contact you

Privacy is not a single on/off switch. Decide which audience and feature matter, then adjust that control. For example, profile visibility, current activity, real-name visibility, friend connections, messages, and crossplay invitations are distinct concerns. Check the available audience choices on your console or account page, and review your profile afterward to confirm what other players can see.

If you want to limit unwanted contact, review the communication and multiplayer controls as well as friend-request and connection settings. Blocking a player is a separate control from limiting who can contact or find you. On PS5, the privacy menu also includes blocked players and crossplay game invitations.

Review account security and connected apps

Privacy settings do not replace account security. Sony’s security guide lists account controls for sign-in ID, passkey, password, security question, mobile number, and two-step verification. Security changes made online are saved to the account and apply across devices and consoles. PlayStation Support: account security settings.

Authorized third-party apps can receive some account data, including online status and gameplay information. Review connected services and unlink apps you no longer use. Sony provides routes through Account Management online, PS5 or PS4 settings, and the PlayStation App. PlayStation Support: authorized apps.

Manage privacy and controls for a child account

A family manager, parent, or guardian can manage a child’s privacy settings and choose which ones the child may change. Sony says a notification is sent when the child or manager changes a setting. If a setting is unavailable to the child, family restrictions or the account’s status may control it; the child cannot necessarily override those limits.

Family controls also cover communication and user-generated content, age-based game access, playtime, monthly spending limits, and access to linked services. The route depends on whether you use the Family app, Account Management, PS5, or PS4, and some controls are region-limited. See Sony’s parental controls and spending limits guide for the relevant family-management options.

Understand game files, saved data, and captures

An installed game and its saved progress are different kinds of data. Storage options depend on the data type and console generation; moving or deleting a game application does not itself explain what happens to a separate save. Sony’s PS5 storage guide provides the console’s storage paths and supported storage categories. PlayStation Support: PS5 storage space and data.

The table describes storage categories, not a guarantee that every drive or setup is compatible. An M.2 SSD is listed for game files; Sony’s cited guidance does not establish it as a save-file backup method. For a PS5 save, find the settings at Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, then choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4). PlayStation Plus members can upload saved data to cloud storage according to Sony’s guide.

Delete a game without confusing it with a save

PS5: delete an installed game or application

  1. Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
  2. Choose the game or application and select Delete.

Sony says purchased applications remain available to redownload from the Library. Some games also let you remove selected portions, such as unused add-ons, without removing the whole installation. Deleting the application and deleting saved data are separate actions, so check the selected item carefully.

PS4: manage saves and applications separately

Manage PS4 saves at Settings > Application Saved Data Management. Sony documents deleting saves from system, online, or USB storage, and copying saves between system storage and a connected USB drive. PS Plus online storage is another save-storage option. Purchased applications can be deleted from the PS4 Library and downloaded again later. See Sony’s PS4 storage management guide.

Redownloading a purchased game does not establish that a deleted save can be recovered. Before removing saved data, confirm that the copy you need exists in a supported backup location.

Back up before changing consoles or resetting

Before deleting saves, changing consoles, or troubleshooting with a reset, check that your progress is backed up and that you can access the relevant cloud or USB copy. PS5 cloud saves require PlayStation Plus under Sony’s storage guide; PS4 saves can be copied to a connected USB drive or stored online.

Restoring default settings is not the same as resetting the console. Sony says restoring default settings does not affect user or game data. Resetting a PS5 or initializing a PS4 deletes user and game data and personalized settings; the action cannot be undone, and deleted data cannot be restored. Do not use a reset as a routine way to free storage. PlayStation Support: restore default settings or reset a console.
