Choose the model that fits your games and storage needs
Confirm whether the Series X has a disc drive
Do not rely on the words “Series X” in a listing to establish that the console can use discs. Microsoft’s product guide says a console may or may not contain an optical drive. Microsoft’s certified-refurbished Series X listing identifies a 4K UHD Blu-ray optical drive, but that listing does not establish the configuration of a used unit elsewhere. Inspect the console and listing, then test the drive if you need physical games or UHD Blu-ray playback.
Account for Series S being digital-only
The Swappa used Xbox buyer’s guide describes Series S as all-digital. It has no disc drive to test, so it cannot play used game discs or UHD Blu-rays.
Check the actual storage and package
Ask for the storage capacity shown in the listing and verify it in the console’s settings; capacity and available free space are not interchangeable. Compare the console’s price with any accessories you would need to replace. Microsoft’s refurbished Series X listing supports a 1TB Xbox Series X|S expansion card, but an expansion card is optional; include its cost only if you need the extra storage.

Also confirm the included controller, power and HDMI cables, purchase documentation, repair history, and any return terms. A lower price can be less attractive if the controller or a cable is missing or the console needs repair.
Inspect the console before you pay
Match the listing to the hardware
Ask the seller for the precise model and storage tier, included accessories, purchase date, receipt if available, and repair history. Compare the listing with the physical console. Look over the case, vents, HDMI and USB ports, power connection, and expansion slot for cracks, bent or loose connectors, corrosion, heavy dirt, or signs of an unprofessional opening. Do not open the console during a normal buyer inspection; Microsoft’s service guidance is repair material, not a recommendation to dismantle a unit without appropriate procedures and tools.

Check power, picture, and gameplay
- Connect the console to a display with a known-working HDMI cable. Check that the image is stable and that the console reaches setup or the dashboard without repeated error screens or shutdowns.
- If possible, change a display setting. Gently move the cable at the connector to check for an intermittent connection; do not force it.
- Launch a game and play long enough to look for crashes, freezes, visual dropouts, or unexpected shutdowns. Listen for grinding, rattling, or unusually loud fan behavior.
Microsoft’s service guide includes launching a game and checking disc gameplay on a 4K TV, but it does not set a required test duration or a diagnostic noise threshold. Treat these checks as practical screening, not a guarantee that a console has no faults.
Test the controller, network, audio, and ports
- Check both sticks for drift and test the face buttons, bumpers, triggers, D-pad, pairing, and vibration.
- Connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet and confirm that the console can reach online setup or services.
- Test audio output and the ports you expect to use with known-working devices.
Microsoft’s service guide lists a controller, network access, an audio device, and a USB connection among the standard equipment for functional checks.

Test the disc drive only on a model that has one
On a Series X with an optical drive, insert a known-working game disc. Confirm that it is recognized and can launch or install, listen for abnormal mechanical sounds, and check that it ejects normally. First confirm that the particular console has a drive: Microsoft’s product guide cautions that a console may or may not contain one. A Series S is digital-only, according to the Swappa buyer’s guide.
Make the ownership handoff clean
Ask the seller to remove their account and reset the console using the option that removes everything. Confirm that it reaches the first-time setup flow. If the seller and internet connection allow, set it up with your own account before completing payment.

Do not treat the seller’s installed games, digital library, or subscriptions as part of the hardware purchase. The Swappa buyer’s guide covers account handoff; the seller’s purchase history is not a reliable basis for assuming that digital content transfers to you.

Ask for a recent, continuous video showing the console booting, the model and serial label, a game launching, the controller working, and—if the unit has a drive—a disc being read and ejected. Video can show those checks, but it cannot prove the console will arrive intact or rule out every intermittent fault.

Before sending money, read the marketplace or retailer’s written return and buyer-protection terms. Check the deadline, exclusions, and required payment method; protections differ by platform and jurisdiction, so a listing’s general assurance is not a substitute for the actual terms.
Check service eligibility and online access
Request the serial number and original receipt, then use Microsoft’s current support process for the relevant region to check service eligibility. Do not assume a warranty remains active or transfers to a buyer: eligibility depends on the unit and applicable terms.
A factory reset does not establish that a console has no enforcement restriction. The sources cited here do not identify a universal official public ban-check tool. Where possible, test online access before buying; if you remain uncertain, contact Xbox Support with the console details.
