To print an AI-generated school portrait at the right size, check the image’s pixel dimensions, preview the crop for your chosen print shape, then divide the cropped pixel width and height by the print’s width and height in inches. That gives you the effective resolution in pixels per inch (PPI). For a portrait viewed close up, 300 PPI is a useful planning target—not a universal minimum or a guarantee of print quality.
What image resolution means for a print
A digital image is made of pixels; PPI describes how many of those pixels are assigned to each inch of the print. Adobe explains that printed image resolution is the number of pixels assigned to each inch when an image is printed (Adobe Photoshop Help).
For each side, calculate: effective PPI = cropped pixel dimension ÷ print dimension in inches. For example, a cropped portrait that is 2400 × 3000 pixels printed at 8 × 10 inches works out to 300 PPI in both directions.
Adobe describes 300 PPI as an industry standard for high-quality prints, especially smaller prints viewed close up. It is a planning target, not a rigid cutoff: the printer, paper, print size, and viewing distance all affect what looks good. Large prints intended to be viewed from farther away can work at lower resolutions (Adobe’s print-resolution guide).

Check the portrait’s pixels and crop before printing
- Choose the intended print dimensions. Use the size requested by the school or the dimensions of the frame. There is no single universally correct school portrait size.
- Find the pixel dimensions of the original or highest-resolution export. Check the image file’s properties or open it in an image editor and inspect its dimensions. Avoid relying on a screenshot or a messaging-app preview: the available copy may have been compressed. HP recommends checking the original file dimensions before printing (HP’s photo-printing guidance).
- Preview the image in the print’s aspect ratio. If the portrait and print have different proportions, choosing “fill” may crop the edges; choosing “fit” may leave borders. Check that the face, shoulders, and any important backdrop or lettering remain inside the frame.
- Calculate PPI using the cropped dimensions. Divide the remaining pixel width and height by the final print width and height in inches. Do not use the uncropped dimensions if the print layout trims the image.
Changing a resolution value without resampling changes the physical size assigned to the existing pixels, not the amount of image data. Resampling changes the pixel dimensions; enlarging an image this way does not restore original detail (Adobe Photoshop Help).
Pixel dimensions for common print sizes
The following approximate pixel dimensions correspond to 300 PPI, based on guidance from Utah Valley University Printing Services. They are planning references, not guarantees that a particular image will print well at that size.

| Print size | Approximate pixels at 300 PPI |
|---|---|
| 4 × 6 inches | 1200 × 1800 |
| 5 × 7 inches | 1500 × 2100 |
| 8 × 10 inches | 2400 × 3000 |
| 8.5 × 11 inches | 2550 × 3300 |
UVU notes that resolution should be assessed at the final print size: enlarging a 300 PPI image to twice its original dimensions reduces effective resolution to about 150 PPI (UVU Printing Services’ print-ready file guidance). If your portrait has fewer pixels than a listed reference, it can still be printed, but its effective PPI will be lower.
Choose a print size that suits the file
Compare your cropped pixel dimensions with the intended output. If the calculated PPI is near 300, the file meets that close-viewed planning target. If it is lower, consider a smaller print, a less aggressive crop, or a larger viewing distance. A larger print is not automatically unsuitable, but do not assume a portrait that looks sharp on a phone or monitor will retain the same appearance when enlarged.

- Choose photo paper suited to your printer and the intended output.
- In the print settings, select a media type that matches the paper loaded and choose an appropriate quality setting.
- Print a small test crop before committing a full sheet. This lets you check framing and, if color consistency matters, the result on your printer and paper.
HP recommends checking the file dimensions, choosing suitable paper, and matching the printer’s media setting to the loaded paper (HP’s photo-printing guidance).
