In Frostpunk, survival depends on balancing three linked supplies: coal powers the Generator, heat protects people and workplaces, and raw food must reach a Cookhouse before it becomes Food Rations. Check the forecast and your stocks regularly, then adjust the smallest number of systems needed to meet current conditions. The exact balance depends on your scenario, population, research, laws, and temperature.
How heat and coal work together
The Generator is the city’s main heat source, and its operating level and range affect coal use. The community-maintained Frostpunk Wiki’s Generator reference lists consumption of 6 coal per hour at Steam level 1 and Range 1—144 coal per day before efficiency technologies. Higher power and greater range increase consumption, so treat the stockpile as a budget for the Generator as well as other active heating.
Heat coverage and heat intensity are different decisions. Coverage determines which buildings receive heat; intensity determines how much heat a system produces. A building can be within a heated zone and still need more heat when conditions worsen.
Choose among Generator range, Steam Hubs, and heaters
For early buildings clustered around the Generator, its existing zone may be sufficient. As the city spreads, compare the cost and coverage of extending the Generator’s range with creating a separate Steam Hub zone or using heaters for specific buildings. Steam Hubs can serve multiple nearby buildings; a heater may make more sense for an isolated workplace. No option is universally best: the right choice depends on building layout, how many buildings need heat, and how continuously they need it.
#1 Best Overall
- POST-APOCALYPTIC SURVIVAL GAME: In Frostpunk, players will take on the role of leaders of a small colony of survivors in a post-apocalyptic world that was hit by a severe ice age. Their duty is to effectively manage both its infrastructure and citizens.
- STRATEGY BOARD GAME: Make the Laws, send out expeditions to uncover the fate of humanity in the frozen wastes, face the consequences of your actions in front of those you swore to protect.
- MULTIPLE PATHS TO VICTORY: The players will decide the fate of their people. Will you treat them like another resource? Are you going to be an inspiring builder, a fearless explorer, or a bright scientist? Is your rule going to be a sting of tyranny or an era of law and equality?
- HIGHLY VARIABLE: The core gameplay is brutal, challenging, and complex, but easy to learn. The citizens won’t just be speechless pieces on the board. Society members will issue demands and react accordingly to the current mood, so every decision and action bears consequences.
- NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND AVERAGE PLAYTIME: This board game is designed for 1 to 4 players and is suitable for ages 16 and older. Average playtime is approximately 120-150 minutes.
The community guide to A New Home recommends placing early buildings near the Generator and considering Steam Hubs as the city expands. That is scenario-specific guidance, not a guaranteed build order for every map or play style.
Adjust heat to conditions
Check which homes and workplaces are at risk before raising heat everywhere. The A New Home guide describes reducing Generator heat during warmer periods and increasing it when colder conditions or nighttime demand call for it. A lower setting can save coal, but only use it while buildings remain adequately heated.

Overdrive offers a temporary alternative: the Generator reference says it adds heat without increasing coal consumption, while building stress that can threaten the Generator. Watch the stress meter and treat overdrive as a short-term buffer, not a setting to leave on without monitoring.
How to keep food moving into rations
Raw food and Food Rations are separate stages. Raw food must first come from a source; a Cookhouse then converts it into food citizens can eat. The Cookhouse reference states that 1 raw food becomes 2 Food Rations.

- Secure a raw-food source. The Food reference lists Hunters, Hothouses, scouting locations, an outpost, and a law-based alternative among the possible sources. Which routes are available depends on the scenario and your choices.
- Make sure the source can operate. Staff or activate it as appropriate to that source and scenario; a listed source does not help if it is not producing.
- Provide Cookhouse access. Raw food does not become rations automatically. Ensure a Cookhouse is available to process the supply.
- Watch the ration stock. Compare available Food Rations with your population’s needs and what is ahead in the scenario. Citizens can progress from hungry to starving if they do not eat; the cited references do not establish one universal consumption rate for every population or situation.
A practical management loop
- Read the temperature forecast. Identify homes and workplaces that need attention rather than assuming every building requires the same heat.
- Check coal use. Review Generator level and range alongside active Steam Hubs and heaters before increasing output.
- Choose targeted heating. Use the existing Generator zone when it covers clustered buildings; consider a Steam Hub for several buildings outside it or a heater for an isolated building.
- Use overdrive cautiously. It can add heat without extra coal according to the Generator reference, but keep an eye on accumulated stress.
- Trace the food chain. Check raw-food production first, then Cookhouse availability and Food Rations in stock.
- Reassess after changes. Temperature, population, research, and laws can all shift the balance, so revisit heat and food plans as the scenario develops.
What the figures and recommendations mean
The 6-coal-per-hour baseline and 1-to-2 food conversion are values reported by community-maintained Frostpunk Wiki mechanics pages; they are not real-world statistics or publisher-authored strategy advice. The A New Home guide’s placement recommendations apply to that scenario. Check your game version and scenario when relying on a specific value or tactic, and avoid treating one fixed opening plan as optimal everywhere. 11 bit studios describes Frostpunk as a society-survival game about ruling the last city on Earth and managing its citizens and infrastructure: the official game page.
