Before you contact the seller
Check the listing and seller
Compare the item description with the photos, stated condition, seller history, included accessories, and return policy. Treat stock photos, vague answers, urgency, and unusually low prices as reasons to ask more questions—not proof of a scam. There is no reliable universal price threshold: value depends on condition, region, bundle, date, and buyer protections.
Research the marketplace’s rules before you commit. Check who handles disputes, whether protection applies to this seller and type of transaction, what it covers, and the deadline to open a claim. Keep messages and payment on the marketplace if going off-platform would remove its protection.
Ask for proof of the actual console
Request a recent video of the listed PS5 Pro powering on, showing its ports and buttons, and connecting to the internet. PlayStation’s US buying guide advises: “Ask them to show the product powering on and connecting to the internet (if relevant).” A practical way to tie the video to the listing is to ask the seller to show a one-time detail, such as the date or a phrase you provide; that is a buyer verification tip, not an official Sony requirement.

Ask for the model information, a clear inventory of what is included, and an original receipt if available. Request the serial number for an in-person check rather than encouraging the seller to post it publicly. A missing receipt does not by itself establish fraud, but it can limit your recourse.
Inspect and test it before accepting the sale
Check the hardware
Whenever possible, inspect the console in person before paying. Compare it with the listing and look for cracks, missing covers, signs of liquid or impact damage, suspicious modifications, and broken seals. Check that the serial number is present and has not been altered or defaced. PlayStation recommends checking seals and serial-number condition in its buying guide.
Connect it to a display and check the image, ports, and buttons. During a reasonable test, watch for unexpected shutdowns or overheating and listen for unusual fan noise. A video can show that a console powers on, but it cannot reliably reveal every physical or operating problem.

Confirm PlayStation service access
Connect the console to the internet and verify that it can access PlayStation services. Ask the seller to deactivate it and confirm they no longer have access. This matters because a console can power on yet still be restricted: PlayStation says a product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. Do not treat the seller’s assurance alone as a substitute for checking service access yourself.
Verify the bundle, especially the disc drive
The PS5 Pro is a 2 TB all-digital console and does not include a built-in disc drive. PlayStation offers a compatible removable Disc Drive separately; an internet connection is required to pair it during setup. If the listing includes one, test it and confirm it pairs. If you need physical discs, make sure the drive is included or budget for it separately; a digital-only console is not a defect when the listing accurately describes it.
Check the listing for the controller, cables, stand feet, and any other promised accessories. Confirm the exact model and compatibility information for your region rather than assuming every listing has the same bundle.

Pay in a way that leaves you recourse
Read the platform’s refund and return terms and save the relevant deadlines. Get the seller’s answers about condition, included items, and returns in writing. The US Federal Trade Commission recommends researching the marketplace, seller, and item, reviewing return policies, and using safer payment options such as a credit card or a secure payment system with buyer protection.
Avoid requests for gift card codes, cryptocurrency, cash reload cards, or wire transfers. The FTC warns that these payment methods can be difficult to recover. Be cautious if a seller urges you to pay outside the marketplace or through a method that has no practical dispute route. Payment protections vary, so check the terms of your specific method rather than assuming a transaction can be reversed.

Get a written sale record naming the console, price, date, and seller. For an online purchase, note the return and claim deadlines as soon as you complete the transaction.
Understand the warranty before weighing the price
PlayStation’s US buying guide says: “Third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty*.” The asterisk matters: the guide distinguishes certified-refurbished PlayStation products, which include a warranty. Do not assume a privately sold used console carries Sony warranty coverage.
Sony’s US/Canada PS5 warranty terms describe a one-year hardware warranty for the original purchaser from the original purchase date and require valid proof of purchase for warranty service. The terms exclude products sold and clearly marked “AS IS” or with faults. This regional policy does not establish the rules for every country or guarantee that warranty transfers to a later buyer. Check the policy for your location, the original receipt, and the seller’s written return terms before relying on coverage.
Compare listings on more than the asking price: consider test evidence, seller history, serial and seal condition, PlayStation service access, receipt and applicable warranty, return protection and deadlines, payment safety, and included accessories. A lower price may not be worthwhile if you cannot verify the console or have no practical way to return it.

When to walk away
- The seller insists on taking payment off-platform while claiming marketplace protections still apply.
- They refuse a current test video, a reasonable inspection, proof they have the console, or clear answers about condition and returns.
- The serial number is missing or damaged, seals appear broken without a credible explanation, or the console cannot connect to PlayStation services.
- They pressure you to act immediately or ask for gift cards, cryptocurrency, or a wire transfer.
- They cannot explain what is included or where the console came from. Missing paperwork alone is not proof of a scam, but it reduces your ability to establish condition, ownership history, or warranty eligibility.
If the purchase goes wrong
Contact the seller promptly, then the marketplace, and preserve the listing, messages, receipt, tracking information, and any test evidence. Follow the platform’s claim process and deadlines. If you paid by card, contact the issuer and ask about disputing the transaction under its terms.
In the United States, suspected fraud can be reported to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to your state attorney general. Outside the US, contact your local consumer-protection agency and payment provider; warranty and consumer rights depend on local rules.
