Wii Sports remains a strong choice for local parties built around its five familiar events, especially baseball and boxing, which are absent from the newer game. For couch play, neither is a universal winner: choose by the sports your group wants and the Nintendo hardware you own.
What changed between Wii Sports and Nintendo Switch Sports?
The sports lineup
Nintendo Switch Sports currently lists eight sports: basketball, golf, Soccer, volleyball, bowling, tennis, badminton and Chambara. The 2006-era Wii Sports lineup has five: tennis, baseball, bowling, golf and boxing. Tennis, bowling and golf appear in both; Wii Sports’ baseball and boxing do not carry over. Switch Sports adds basketball, Soccer, volleyball, badminton and Chambara. Golf and basketball arrived in free updates after the newer game’s 2022 launch, so they were not both part of its original lineup.

The difference matters more than the raw count. If your group wants baseball or boxing, Wii Sports has the events you are looking for. If it wants Soccer or Chambara, Switch Sports is the option. For shared favorites such as tennis, bowling and golf, the deciding factor is more likely to be hardware, play format or online features.
Motion controls and hardware
Wii Sports uses the Wii Remote; boxing uses gestures with a Wii Remote and Nunchuk. Switch Sports uses Joy-Con motion controls. Nintendo Support says Switch Sports does not support handheld mode, and controller setup depends on the sport. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible, according to Nintendo’s Switch Sports FAQ.

The physical edition of Switch Sports includes a Leg Strap accessory for Soccer, which Nintendo also sells separately. The Leg Strap is not compatible with Joy-Con 2 controllers, according to the same FAQ. Check the controller setup for the sports you plan to play before buying extra hardware.
How do the games compare for local multiplayer?
Both are designed for shared-room play, but their sport selections and controller systems are different. Nintendo’s U.S. Switch Sports product page says local play supports one to four players on one system. That is an overall system limit, not a promise that every sport has the same player format; Nintendo says requirements vary by sport.
Rank #2
- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
Wii Sports suits groups who want to pass around Wii Remotes and play its five classics. A secondary reference notes that its turn-based golf and bowling can share one Wii Remote. The Wii hardware and Wii Remotes are required, so Wii Sports is not a substitute for a game that runs on a current Switch.
For either game, decide based on the event you actually want to play and the controllers available. Switch Sports adds newer team formats, while Wii Sports offers training challenges and a fitness test alongside its sports.

What does Switch Sports add for online multiplayer?
Online play is the clearest multiplayer advantage for Switch Sports. Nintendo describes random matchmaking, Pro League ranks, rotating cosmetic rewards and private play with friends. It also supports teaming up with someone on the same system against online opponents in certain team sports. Nintendo’s product page describes playing online or teaming up locally with a friend against opponents in Basketball, Volleyball and Tennis.
Nintendo says online play supports one or two players per system on its U.S. product page. An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online play, as stated in the Nintendo Support FAQ. Nintendo’s UK product page also describes a 16-player bowling knockout; that specific format is documented on the UK page and should not be assumed to apply to every online mode.
Rank #4
- 6 sports: Baseball, run's jump, goalkeeper, tennis, bowling & rafting.
- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
- Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.
- More than 15 environments and tons of unlockable items.
Wii Sports’ appeal is local play and its training and fitness modes. The reviewed historical reference does not document the online matchmaking, league ranks or friend-play features described for Switch Sports.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which game should your multiplayer group choose?
| If your group wants… | Better fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Online matchmaking, ranks and private play with friends | Nintendo Switch Sports | Online play requires Nintendo Switch Online; controller and player limits depend on the mode. |
| Baseball or boxing | Wii Sports | Those sports are in the original’s five-event lineup, not Switch Sports’ current eight. |
| Soccer, Chambara, badminton, volleyball or basketball | Nintendo Switch Sports | These sports are part of the newer game’s current lineup; basketball was added after launch through a free update. |
| Training challenges and a fitness test | Wii Sports | These modes are included in the original game. |
| Local play on hardware you already own | It depends | Wii Sports requires a Wii and Wii Remotes; Switch Sports requires a Switch and compatible Joy-Con setup. |
Choose Switch Sports if online play, current team formats or its newer sports are the priority. Choose Wii Sports if you want the original five-event mix, particularly baseball or boxing, or value its training and fitness modes. If you are deciding only about couch play, let the group’s favorite sports and available hardware settle it rather than assuming the larger lineup is automatically better.
