Microsoft has officially announced Project Helix, its next-generation Xbox console project, and says it will play Xbox console and PC games using a custom AMD chip. The company also promises a major leap in ray tracing, but has not disclosed final hardware specifications, a consumer release date, or a price. Detailed claims about a chip called “Magnus” remain unverified leaks—not confirmed Helix specs.
What Microsoft has confirmed about the next Xbox
Project Helix is the name Microsoft has given its next-generation first-party Xbox console project. Xbox says it is designed to play both Xbox console games and PC games, and that a custom AMD system-on-chip (SoC) is being co-designed for next-generation DirectX and FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). Xbox Wire’s March 11, 2026 announcement describes the intended direction, not a retail specification sheet.
Xbox says Helix will deliver an “order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability,” with intelligence integrated into the graphics and compute pipeline. That is Microsoft’s stated goal; the announcement does not include independent benchmarks or measured comparisons, so it should not be treated as a tested performance result.
Microsoft also says it is committed to keeping games from four Xbox generations playable for years to come. This is a broad backward-compatibility commitment, not a published game-by-game list. Specific supported titles and any limits have not been detailed in the cited announcement.

What are the rumored upgrades to the new Xbox?
The most specific widely circulated hardware claims concern an alleged AMD APU codenamed Magnus. Tom’s Guide reported on July 18, 2025 that the chip could have a 264 mm² graphics die, a 384-bit memory bus, and 11 CPU cores described as three Zen 6 cores plus eight Zen 6 cores.
Those figures are not confirmed Project Helix specifications. Tom’s Guide attributed the claims to Moore’s Law is Dead and said the APU might be for either the PS6 or the next Xbox. The article also cited another leaker’s view that Magnus could be the Xbox chip, while warning that readers should not take the claims as gospel. Microsoft’s later confirmation that Helix uses a custom AMD SoC does not verify the Magnus name or any of its reported dimensions, core counts, or bus details.

- What's in the box: Xbox Series X console, 1 Xbox Wireless Controller - Carbon Black, Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, Power cord.
- Equipped with AMD's Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architectures, DirectX ray tracing delivers true-to-life lighting, shadows and accurate reflections to create dynamic, living worlds.
- Memory: 16GB GDDR6 w/320 bit-wide bus; Memory Bandwidth: 10 GB @ 560 GB/s, 6 GB @ 336 GB/s; Internal Storage: 1TB Custom NVME SSD
- Gaming Resolution: True 4K; Performance Target: Up to 120 FPS; High Dynamic Range: Up to 8K HDR; Optical Drive: 4K UHD Blu-Ray; HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.
- Bundled with HDMI_Cable
For now, the reliable distinction is simple: custom AMD silicon and an emphasis on ray tracing are official; the precise CPU and GPU design, memory configuration, and performance remain undisclosed. No confirmed frame-rate target or retail performance figure appears in the cited announcement.
When is the next Xbox coming out?
Xbox plans to begin shipping alpha versions of Project Helix hardware to developers in 2027. That is a developer-facing milestone, not a consumer launch date. Windows Central reported in February 2026 that AMD CEO Lisa Su said the semi-custom SoC was progressing to support a 2027 launch, but characterized 2027 as a best-case scenario and reported that Microsoft had not made a firm internal commitment.

Microsoft has not announced a retail release date or price in the cited materials. GameSpot’s March 2026 roundup likewise noted that neither had been disclosed. A developer alpha schedule or an AMD executive’s reported comment should not be read as confirmation of when or at what price consumers can buy the console.
How Helix fits into Xbox’s wider hardware plans
Microsoft’s hardware strategy extends beyond one console. Xbox describes a portfolio spanning consoles, handhelds, PCs, cloud gaming, and accessories, with AMD co-engineering silicon across that portfolio. Its March 11, 2026 platform update also notes more than 1,500 games in the Xbox Play Anywhere catalog and 500 development teams that have shipped Play Anywhere games. Separately, Microsoft Game Dev’s 2026 summary says more than 5,000 developers are currently building for Xbox; those developer and catalog figures describe the ecosystem, not Helix hardware.

Xbox has also said Xbox Mode will begin rolling out to Windows 11 in select markets from April 2026. The company describes it as a full-screen, controller-optimized Xbox experience that retains Windows’ openness. That software initiative is part of the broader platform strategy, but it does not establish that Helix will run a standard desktop version of Windows or support every PC storefront.

- Final CPU and GPU architectures, core counts, memory capacity, storage specifications, and retail performance.
- Whether the Magnus APU is Helix’s chip, or whether any of its reported specifications match the eventual consumer system.
- The consumer release date, price, and specific supported PC storefronts.
- A game-by-game backward-compatibility list and detailed limits on the four-generation commitment.
Until Microsoft publishes those details, comparisons based on rumored specifications or assumed prices risk treating speculation as fact. The confirmed news is the platform direction and the planned 2027 start for developer alpha hardware; the retail configuration is still to be announced.
