Choose split-screen when everyone is in the same room and the game supports your group size. Choose online multiplayer when friends are remote or you want matchmaking, scheduled races, or private internet lobbies. Before deciding, check the specific game and platform: player limits, controller needs, online memberships, and available modes vary.
Start with where your group will play
Choose split-screen for same-room races
Local play is the straightforward fit when everyone is together: connect the needed controllers, choose a local mode, and race on one console and display. It avoids matchmaking and internet-lobby setup, but it depends on the game supporting local multiplayer for the number of people you have. A controller is needed for each player in Gran Turismo 7’s split-screen mode, for example, and its player cap differs by console.

Choose online for remote friends or organized competition
Online multiplayer lets people race from separate locations. Depending on the game, it can mean public matchmaking, scheduled events, or a private lobby with settings chosen by the host. Online play requires network access and may also require a platform membership; the exact conditions are game- and platform-specific.
Compare the practical trade-offs
| What matters | Split-screen or local play | Online multiplayer |
|---|---|---|
| Where players are | Everyone plays in the same room. | Friends can join from separate locations. |
| Group size | Limited by the game, console, screen layout, and available controllers. | Limited by the game’s online mode and event rules. |
| Equipment and access | A compatible console and display, plus a controller for each player where required. | A compatible game platform and internet access; a platform membership may also be required. |
| Competition | Immediate head-to-head races without matchmaking. | May offer matchmaking, scheduled events, global races, or private lobbies. |
| Setup | Often quick once the game recognizes local players and controllers. | May involve accounts, a membership, network setup, or creating and joining a lobby. |
| Best fit | Couch gatherings and spontaneous races. | Remote groups, broader competition, and planned sessions. |
Check the exact game and platform
“Local multiplayer” does not guarantee that a game supports split-screen, and a player limit for one mode does not automatically apply to another. Check the current official manual or support page for the specific game, platform, and mode you plan to use.

Gran Turismo 7: local limits vary by console
Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 7 Online Manual says Split-Screen Race supports up to four players on supported consoles, or up to two on PS4. Each participant needs a controller. The official product page lists PS5 and PS4 disc editions; it also notes that only Arcade Mode is available offline. For online racing, the product information describes global Daily Races and an annual Online Championship. Those are distinct ways to play, so choose based on whether your group needs local head-to-head racing or internet-based competition.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: wireless, LAN, and online are different modes
Nintendo’s multiplayer support guide says Wireless Play supports two to eight players, with up to two players per console, while LAN Play supports up to 12. These are mode-specific limits, not a promise that one console can host eight players in split-screen. Online play includes regional, tournament, and friends modes and requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Forza Motorsport: scheduled races or a private lobby
In an August 11, 2023 article, Turn 10 Studios describes Forza Motorsport’s Featured Multiplayer as scheduled events with practice, qualifying, and races. The article says Featured Multiplayer matchmaking uses Driver and Safety Ratings. Private Multiplayer lobbies let hosts customize settings such as race length, class, track, and rules. This is an example of online racing with both structured competition and more controlled sessions; the cited overview does not establish a split-screen option for the current game. See the studio’s Forza Motorsport page for the game overview.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the choice with a short checklist
- Same room or remote? For a group together in one room, look first for a supported local mode. For friends in different places, look for online multiplayer.
- How many people will race? Match the game’s limit to your group on the exact console and mode—not just the game’s general player count.
- Do you have enough compatible controllers? Count controllers before choosing local play; check game and console compatibility before buying extras.
- What kind of race do you want? Look for matchmaking or scheduled events if you want structured competition, and private-lobby controls if you want to set the rules yourselves.
- What does online access require? Check for a platform membership and consider connection quality. Gran Turismo’s online experience guidance says connection quality and NAT type affect the online environment.
The best mode is the one your game actually supports for your group. Confirm the player limit, platform, controllers, and online requirements before settling on a title or planning a race.
