Steam Deck has a defined route for playing many Windows games through Proton, plus per-game compatibility ratings from Valve. “ARM handheld,” by contrast, describes a processor architecture—not one operating system, game store, or compatibility layer. That means there is no reliable category-wide verdict on which plays more games or runs them faster. Compare specific ARM models and the same games under matched conditions.
How Steam Deck and ARM handhelds differ
Steam Deck is a handheld PC running SteamOS 3, which Valve identifies as Arch-based. For Windows games without native Linux builds, Steam Deck uses Proton as a compatibility layer. This gives Deck owners a relatively consistent software path, though it does not make every Windows game compatible. Valve’s Steam Deck specifications and Steamworks’ compatibility documentation describe that baseline.
ARM handhelds do not share one equivalent baseline. A device’s ARM processor alone does not tell you which OS it runs, which games or stores it supports, whether it translates software built for another platform, or how much configuration a game needs. Those details must be checked for the individual model.
| Comparison point | Steam Deck | ARM handhelds |
|---|---|---|
| Software baseline | SteamOS 3, identified by Valve as Arch-based. Valve specifications | Not stated for the category; operating system varies by model. |
| Windows-game path | Proton can run Windows games that lack native Linux builds; compatibility still varies by title. Steamworks | Not stated for the category; check the model’s OS and game-running method. |
| Compatibility rating | Valve provides game-specific Steam Deck ratings, and the information can change. Steam Deck Verified | Not stated for the category; there is no shared ARM-wide rating system established here. |
| Comparable performance result | No matched result established against an ARM model. | No matched result established against Steam Deck. |
Can ARM handhelds play Steam games?
There is no single yes-or-no answer for ARM handhelds as a category. The processor architecture does not establish whether a particular device can install or run the Steam client, whether a given game is supported, or whether it needs a translation layer, emulation, streaming, or other software.

For a specific model, check its operating system, supported game sources, and the method it uses to run each title. Then check the game itself: a launcher appearing in a library does not by itself establish that the game will launch, that required middleware or anti-cheat will work, or that controls and text will be usable.
What Steam Deck Verified does—and does not—tell you
Steam Deck Verified is a game-by-game assessment for the Deck, not a guarantee that every Steam game works and not a rating that transfers to ARM devices. Valve’s criteria include whether a game supports the Deck’s default resolution, whether its text is legible, and whether the game and its middleware work when run through Proton. Valve also considers whether the default experience and settings meet Deck-specific expectations. Valve’s Verified information notes that ratings can be updated as compatibility information and the device change.

A Deck rating therefore answers a Deck-specific question: how well the game meets Valve’s expectations on that platform. It does not predict the result on another handheld, even if that device can access the same game store. For an ARM model, look for results for that exact device and title.
What to compare before judging game support
A useful comparison starts with a named ARM model and a set of games you actually want to play. For every title, separate whether it launches from whether it works well enough to use.

- Game source and software path: Identify whether the game is installed from Steam or another store, has a native build, runs through a translation or emulation layer, or is streamed.
- Compatibility: Check whether the title launches, whether middleware and anti-cheat function, and whether text, controls, and in-game input are usable.
- Setup effort: Record whether it works out of the box or requires configuration, an alternate launcher, community tools, or streaming.
- Performance conditions: For a fair comparison, use the same game version and record each device, graphics settings, resolution, power mode, frame-rate result, and test method.
- Portability: Compare exact models for screen, controls, storage, size, and battery evidence rather than treating all ARM devices as alike.
Which runs games faster?
There is no supported performance winner between Steam Deck and ARM handhelds as a category. A meaningful result needs named devices and like-for-like tests: the same title and version, comparable settings and resolution, disclosed power modes, and a stated measurement method. Without that, claims that ARM is inherently faster or slower than Deck are not established.
Game support and speed are also separate questions. A game may launch through a compatibility path but perform poorly, or run smoothly once configured while still requiring more setup than it would on another device. Check title-specific compatibility and performance evidence rather than inferring either from the processor architecture.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Does changing Steam Deck compatibility settings help?
It can be worth trying when a game does not behave as expected, but selecting another compatibility tool is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix. Steam Support documents changing the tool for an individual game through its Properties and Compatibility settings. Steam Deck software troubleshooting gives the relevant guidance.
- Open the game’s page in your Steam Library.
- Open the game’s Properties, then choose Compatibility.
- Select or force a Steam Play compatibility tool for that game, then test whether its behavior changes.
Hardware, battery, and offline play
Valve lists a 1280 × 800 display for the Steam Deck specifications cited here. Its listed gameplay battery estimate is 2–8 hours; that is a manufacturer estimate for the specified model information, not an independent measurement or a comparison with an ARM handheld. Valve’s specifications also describe the hardware baseline. For an actual buying decision, compare the exact Deck and ARM models you are considering rather than treating the Deck figure as a universal handheld-PC result.
Offline access also depends on the game. Valve says: “Once a game is installed on disk, you can play while Steam Deck is offline unless the game requires an internet connection.” A title with an online requirement remains dependent on that connection even when installed. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ provides the caveat.
How to make the buying comparison
Start with the games that matter most, then compare the specific devices against those titles. Steam Deck offers Valve’s Deck-specific ratings and a documented Proton route for many Windows games. For an ARM device, establish its operating system and software path first, then look for title-specific results. If performance is decisive, rely on matched tests; if convenience matters more, weigh out-of-box behavior and required setup alongside frame rate.
