Choose by the kind of decision you want to make: Circadian Dice focuses on shaping dice faces, Astrea: Six-Sided Oracles on building and editing a dice pool, and Dicey Dungeons on equipping actions and assigning rolled dice. Their difficulty signals and replay hooks differ, too, so there is no evidence-based universal ranking of which is hardest or most replayable.
What does “building” mean in each game?
“Dice-building roguelite” is a useful umbrella, not a strict genre boundary. These games put the build in different places: the dice themselves, a pool of dice, or the equipment and character that use your rolls.
| Game | What you build or change | What a run asks you to do |
|---|---|---|
| Circadian Dice | Upgrade dice and shape their six-sided faces into functions such as weapons, wealth generators, magic conduits, or stat boosts. A semi-random upgrade system creates different combo opportunities. | Manage resources and use your dice-building choices to get through scenarios with a group of heroes. |
| Astrea: Six-Sided Oracles | Build a dice pool, choose among safe, balanced, and risky dice, and edit faces to add actions. | Use Purification and Corruption effects to damage or heal enemies and yourself, while managing a dynamic health bar. |
| Dicey Dungeons | Develop a character’s equipment and class-specific abilities; assign rolled dice to equipment actions. | Combine planned turns with uncertain rolls. Each of the six classes changes how that puzzle plays out. |
Pick Circadian Dice if you want to shape the dice
Its central appeal is direct manipulation of die faces and probability. The game is described by Shuffle Up Games as a single-player, deck-building-inspired game in which you build dice rather than a deck. The Steam description characterizes it as “A game about probability manipulation and combo crafting.” Its content counts are publisher/store-description facts from 2022: 10 heroes, 13 hand-crafted scenarios, 60 relics, 110+ abilities, 66 enemies, and 27 bosses. Those counts describe listed content, not an independent measure of depth.
Pick Astrea if you want a pool with distinct risk profiles
Astrea makes the dice pool itself part of the build. You can choose dice described as safe, balanced, or risky, then edit faces to add actions. Its Purification-versus-Corruption system also gives rolls a distinctive role: Purification can damage enemies or heal you, while Corruption can hurt you or heal enemies. Taking Corruption can also enable skills on the dynamic health bar. The developers and publisher describe six Oracles, each with distinct dice sets, abilities, and play styles, as well as over 350 dice; these are store-page claims, not independent measures of variety.

Pick Dicey Dungeons if you want to build around equipment and character rules
Dicey Dungeons is less about editing die faces and more about deciding how each roll powers your equipment. Its six classes—Warrior, Thief, Robot, Jester, Inventor, and Witch—have different play styles. The Thief steals random enemy equipment; the Robot uses a push-your-luck blackjack game to gain dice; and the Inventor destroys equipment after fights to make gadgets. As creator Terry Cavanagh puts it in the Steam description, “Balance your carefully planned strategies against the unknown of a dice roll.”
How much control over luck do you want?
All three involve dice, but they frame uncertainty differently. If you enjoy turning probability into a planning problem, Circadian Dice foregrounds probability manipulation and face-shaping. Astrea gives you a choice of safer or riskier dice and lets you adjust faces, while making the consequences of Corruption part of the tactical decision. Dicey Dungeons puts the uncertainty of the roll in direct tension with equipment choices and class rules.

- Endless Replayability : Use a different combination of Ability Cards each game, so no two games will ever be the same!
- More control through modification: Circadian Dice emphasizes changing die faces and building combos.
- Risk selection inside the pool: Astrea explicitly distinguishes safe, balanced, and risky dice.
- Roll uncertainty as a tactical constraint: Dicey Dungeons asks you to allocate the dice you roll to available actions.
These are different approaches, not a measured scale from “most controlled” to “most random.” Choose based on whether you prefer to alter probability, select a risk profile, or solve around the roll you get.
How should you compare difficulty?
There is no comparable global difficulty rating across these listings, so a head-to-head ranking would overstate what is known. Circadian Dice offers Normal and Hard modes for scenarios. Astrea’s Steam page carries the “Difficult” tag, which is a storefront tag rather than a standardized rating; its risky dice also make risk management an explicit part of play. Dicey Dungeons highlights class differences and luck but does not provide a comparable overall difficulty scale in its listing.

For your own choice, consider what kind of challenge you enjoy: selecting a mode, managing high-risk effects, or adapting a class-specific strategy to rolls. None of these indicators establishes which game is objectively hardest.
What gives each game reasons to replay?
| Game | Replay hooks stated by the developer or store page |
|---|---|
| Circadian Dice | 10 heroes, 13 hand-crafted scenarios, Normal and Hard scenario modes, persistent upgrades and unlocks across scenarios, an endless randomized scenario, and a campaign. Counts are from Shuffle Up Games’ 2022 description. |
| Dicey Dungeons | Six playable classes, procedurally generated playthroughs, and free Reunion DLC described on the Steam listing as adding six new episodes. The DLC description was listed as accessed October 7, 2026. |
| Astrea: Six-Sided Oracles | Six Oracles with distinct dice sets, abilities, and play styles; the Steam page also lists 80 achievements. The page’s count and achievement total do not establish a specific amount of playtime or replay value. |
Feature counts can help you spot the kind of variation you want, but they do not prove that one game offers more hours or is more replayable for every player. Scenario variety, procedural runs, persistent progression, character asymmetry, and additional episodes are different reasons to return.
