Valve’s published requirements for the standard Steam for Linux desktop client specify a 64-bit x86_64/AMD64 processor—not an ARM processor. The requirements also call for 64-bit and 32-bit x86 libraries and graphics drivers. That describes the general desktop client’s documented support target, but it is not accurate to say that Valve software can never run on ARM: Valve documents SteamOS running on an Arm64 Steam Frame, with compatibility layers for other architectures.
What the standard Linux client officially requires
Valve’s Steam for Linux README lists the latest Ubuntu or an Ubuntu LTS release and a 64-bit x86_64/AMD64 kernel. It specifies an x86_64/AMD64 processor with CMPXCHG16B and SSE3 support, plus 64-bit and 32-bit x86 graphics drivers and glibc. The README says glibc 2.31 or newer has been required since August 15, 2025.
That is more specific than “64-bit Linux.” ARM64 is a different processor architecture, and an ARM Linux installation does not satisfy the README’s stated x86 processor and library requirements simply because it is 64-bit. The listed 512 MB RAM and 5 GB storage requirements are client requirements, not recommendations for running games well.
Why that requirement does not explain Valve’s original decision
The README establishes the desktop client’s published requirements; it does not say why Valve chose them. The requirements show an x86-targeted client environment with both 64-bit and 32-bit dependencies, but they do not establish a specific historical engineering or business motive. Legacy software, implementation cost, game availability, or support scope might seem plausible explanations, but Valve’s reviewed public documentation does not identify them as the reason.

Steam Frame is a product-specific ARM exception
Valve’s Steamworks documentation says Steam Frame runs SteamOS, based on Arch Linux, on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Arm64 chip. Valve describes the device as including compatibility layers for other operating systems and processor architectures. This is a defined Valve hardware and software target, not a change to the published requirements for installing the general desktop client on any ARM Linux computer.

Valve says FEX translates x86 game instructions to Arm64 and forwards API calls to host system libraries. That is a component of Steam Frame’s documented compatibility approach; it does not mean every ARM Linux desktop has the same software stack, drivers, configuration, or support status.

What ARM client reports do—and do not—show
A 2026 report in Valve’s Steam for Linux issue tracker describes native ARM64 client builds but explicitly notes that they had not been officially released. The report also describes an illegal-instruction crash on one Armv8.0 CPU with newer builds. It is evidence of ARM builds existing in some form and of a possible CPU-feature compatibility issue in that case—not a general support specification or proof that the client works across ARM computers.
A 2025 SteamOS issue asks about a public ARM64 SteamOS image, an ARM64 Linux client, and ARM64 game uploads. The question is user-authored; it is not a Valve roadmap or a confirmed release schedule. Likewise, a separate issue report about an ARM64-only compatibility component appearing on x86_64 Linux is an anecdote, not a change to Valve’s published desktop architecture requirements.

What to expect if you have an ARM Linux computer
Do not assume that the standard Steam desktop client is officially supported just because your device runs Linux or uses a 64-bit processor. The published general requirements are for x86_64/AMD64. Steam Frame is the documented ARM example, but its device-specific SteamOS and compatibility stack should not be treated as an installation recipe or support guarantee for unrelated ARM systems.
