- Gears of War: E-Day — The Coalition and Xbox Wire place the story fourteen years before the original Gears of War, following Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust emerge. It launched October 6, 2026. Xbox Wire’s release announcement lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, Game Pass Ultimate, and PC Game Pass.
- Gears of War: Judgment (main campaign) — A prequel set before the original trilogy. Keep its Aftermath bonus campaign separate; that story takes place in the Gears of War 3 era.
- Gears Tactics — A turn-based strategy spin-off about Gabe Diaz and his squad. Its official page confirms the game and protagonist, but does not establish a precise place in the timeline; treat it as a prequel-era entry, not a rigorously dated link between the other games.
- Gears of War — Play the original campaign, or choose Gears of War: Reloaded, a remastered version of the original game. Xbox describes the original as faithfully remastered for Xbox Series X|S and PC in its franchise listing.
- Gears of War 2
- Gears of War 3 — This is also the era for Judgment: Aftermath, if you are playing that bonus campaign. The available official material does not establish an exact position within this period.
- Gears of War 4
- Gears 5
- Gears 5: Hivebusters — A campaign expansion for Gears 5. For a straightforward first playthrough, finish the main campaign before starting it; the official Gears 5 page lists Hivebusters as part of the Game of the Year Edition.
How precise is this story order?
The sequence is useful for organizing the major games from early events to later ones, but it should not be mistaken for a complete official timeline. E-Day has a stated relationship to the original game; the accessible official pages do not publish a unified chronology for every act, bonus campaign, and overlap. In particular, do not move all of Judgment to the Gears 3 period just because Aftermath is set there.
Gears Tactics also needs a qualification: its official page describes Gabe Diaz, his squad, and the tactical gameplay, but does not give the chronology needed to place it precisely among the other prequel-era stories. Its position in this broad order is a practical grouping, not a publisher-confirmed date.

Should you play in story order or release order?
For a first playthrough, release order is the safer choice. It preserves the context in which the games introduced their characters, conflicts, and reveals; chronological order instead prioritizes when events happen in the fiction and can put prequels ahead of the stories that originally supplied that context. This is editorial guidance rather than a publisher-mandated order.

Either route can include Gears Tactics, but it plays differently from the mainline third-person campaigns: it is a turn-based strategy game built around squad tactics. If you want the core shooter narrative, you can treat it as an optional spin-off.
