PS5 Pro vs. PS5: What Changes and Who Should Upgrade?

PS5 Pro adds stronger graphics hardware, PSSR, advanced ray tracing and 2 TB of storage, but its benefits depend on game support. Here’s who should upgrade.

PS5 Pro is a worthwhile upgrade mainly for players who want better image quality or performance in games that specifically support its enhancements. It adds a more powerful GPU, PSSR upscaling, advanced ray tracing, Wi-Fi 7 compatibility and 2 TB of built-in storage. Those improvements are not universal: Sony says Pro features vary by game. If your current PS5 already runs your favorite games the way you want, keeping it is reasonable.

What is the difference between PS5 Pro and PS5?

The biggest difference is how supported games render. PS5 Pro has stronger graphics hardware and features such as PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony’s AI-enhanced upscaling technology, and advanced ray tracing. A game can use these tools to target sharper-looking output, higher frame rates or both. The exact result depends on the game; the hardware specifications alone do not establish a particular frame-rate or image-quality gain.

Area PS5 Pro Standard PS5 What it means
GPU 16.7 TFLOPS, RDNA-based, according to Sony’s PS5 Pro manual. 10 TFLOPS, RDNA-based, according to Sony’s PS5 manual. The Pro has a higher manufacturer-listed GPU figure. TFLOPS are a specification, not a direct prediction of how a specific game will look or run.
Supported-game rendering PSSR, advanced ray tracing and game-specific Pro enhancements. Standard PS5 game experience. Improvements require a game to implement Pro features; they are not automatically applied in the same way to every title.
Built-in storage 2 TB SSD. Sony’s US product page lists 1 TB for the disc console and 825 GB for the digital console. The Pro provides more built-in space, but usable capacity is lower because system software reserves storage. Both console families have an M.2 expansion connector.
Wireless networking Wi-Fi 7 compatibility; also works with Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 5 routers. Wi-Fi 6-class support (802.11ax) in Sony’s current manual. Wi-Fi 7 benefits require a compatible router and suitable network conditions. It is unlikely to matter much if you use Ethernet or Wi-Fi 6.
Disc drive Sold separately. The disc edition includes a drive; digital editions do not. Pro owners with physical games or movie discs need the compatible detachable drive, whose initial pairing requires an internet connection.
PS4 compatibility Plays over 8,500 PS4 games, according to Sony; Game Boost can improve some PS4 and PS5 titles. Supports the PS5 and PS4 game ecosystem. Sony notes a small number of PS4 titles are incompatible, so check a specific older game if it is essential to your library.

How much better do games look and run on PS5 Pro?

There is no single improvement that applies to every game. Sony says compatible titles can offer 60 fps or up to 120 fps with ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K resolution, but these are capabilities for supported games, not a guarantee that every title reaches those targets. Select games can support output up to 8K; 8K support is not universal.

PSSR is an upscaling feature, so avoid interpreting “4K” as a promise that every game renders each frame natively at 4K. What you see depends on the game’s Pro implementation, its modes and your display. A 4K screen makes the intended visual improvements more relevant, but the clearest reason to consider the upgrade is whether the specific games you play have enhancements you value.

#1 Best Overall
PlayStation 5 Pro with 2TB SSD Storage, Console Only - PS5 Pro Gaming System, White (Renewed)
  • Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
  • Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
  • Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
  • Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
  • Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.

One example: Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Insomniac Games Core Technology Director Mike Fitzgerald said the game would include a default Performance Pro mode combining the crisp 4K resolution and ray-tracing features of Fidelity mode with the 60 fps performance of Performance mode. That is a developer statement about one game, not an independent comparative test or a promise about other titles.

Should you upgrade to PS5 Pro?

PS5 Pro makes sense if

  • You play games with PS5 Pro enhancements and want their higher image quality, smoother performance or combination of both.
  • You use a 4K display and care about the visual differences available in supported titles.
  • You want more built-in storage than your current standard PS5 configuration provides.
  • You are willing to buy a separate drive if you use physical games or movie discs.

Keep your standard PS5 if

  • You are satisfied with the performance and image quality you already get.
  • Your most-played games do not have Pro enhancements that matter to you.
  • You do not have a display that lets you appreciate the changes, or you are not concerned about them.
  • The local price difference matters more to you than the supported-game improvements. Sony’s official pages do not establish a stable cross-retailer price comparison, so compare checkout prices and any trade-in value when you are ready to buy.

This recommendation follows Sony’s product specifications and feature qualifications; it is not based on an independent benchmark comparing identical games, patches, modes and displays on both consoles.

What to check before buying

  1. Check your games. Look for PS5 Pro enhancements in the titles you play most. Features vary by game, so the console’s headline capabilities do not guarantee a meaningful change in your particular library.
  2. Consider your display and priorities. Decide whether sharper image quality, ray tracing or higher frame rates in supported games would improve your experience enough to justify the upgrade.
  3. Account for physical media. If you own disc games or watch discs, include the cost and availability of Sony’s compatible detachable drive in your decision. The drive supports PS5 Ultra HD Blu-ray game discs, compatible PS4 Blu-ray game discs, Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD formats; initial console-and-drive pairing requires internet access. See Sony’s disc-drive compatibility information.
  4. Compare the complete local cost. Check the current console price, the optional drive if needed, and any trade-in value. A stable price comparison across retailers is not established by Sony’s product pages.

PS5 Pro vs. PS5: the practical verdict

PS5 Pro is the more capable console on paper, but its strongest case is specific: supported games, a player who values their enhanced visuals or performance, and a display that can show the difference. More storage and Wi-Fi 7 compatibility may also matter to some buyers. For owners already happy with standard PS5 performance—or whose games do not benefit meaningfully—the Pro is an optional upgrade rather than a necessary replacement.
