First identify the game, both players’ platforms, and what kind of invitation is failing: a voice party, a game session, or an in-game lobby. Those use different invitation routes. Then check whether the invite never arrives, arrives but cannot be accepted, or is accepted but the game cannot connect; each points to a different cause.
Start by identifying the invitation and the failure
“Party invite” can mean a voice-chat party or an invitation to join multiplayer gameplay. A game may also have its own lobby or social-menu invitation system. The right place to send or accept an invite depends on the platform and the game, so do not assume a console-level invite works for every title.
- Invite never arrives: Check that the sender used a route supported by the game, then check the recipient’s invitation inbox and relevant privacy or block settings.
- Invite arrives but cannot be accepted: Check whether the recipient is eligible to join, whether the session is joinable, and whether the game supports the attempted platform pairing.
- Invite is accepted but joining fails: Treat this as a possible game/session or network connection problem, not just a notification problem.
Record the exact game and platform for each player before troubleshooting. Xbox-specific consumer menu instructions are not established here, so use the game’s official guidance or Xbox support rather than guessing at a menu path.
Use the invitation route supported by the game
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
On Nintendo Switch, received invitations can be checked from the player’s profile under Online Play Invites. Nintendo says the Switch User Page menu cannot invite a specific person on the Friend List to a multiplayer game; its support page states, “It is not possible to invite specific people on your Friend List to join a multiplayer game through the Nintendo Switch User Page menu.” Use the game’s own invite or join feature when it supports one. On Switch 2, Nintendo describes invitations for supported software through the C Menu. For received invitations, also check the profile’s Online Play Invites area. The available route depends on the software and platform context; a Switch 2 menu should not be assumed to apply to every game. PlayStation 5
PS5 players can send game invitations from a player profile, Game Base, or the game itself; the system-level profile and Game Base routes described by Sony apply to PS5 games, while in-game behavior can differ. A received game invitation appears as a notification. Sony also describes joining an eligible friend’s game group from the friend’s profile or the Play With Friends card. Check whether the recipient and session can join
On PS5, a blocked player in the group or party will not receive the game invitation. The recipient also needs the game installed, and the session must have an open place. If the game offers a request-to-join option, use that flow rather than expecting every session to be directly joinable. Sony’s PS5 joining guidance

On Switch, look in Online Play Invites for received invitations and confirm that the game supports the invitation behavior you are trying to use. A friend appearing in a console friend list does not by itself establish that a particular game can invite or join that friend.
Review privacy, communication, and family controls
On PlayStation, review the account’s privacy settings for communication and multiplayer, including whether cross-play game invitations are allowed. A child account’s settings may be managed by a family manager, parent, or guardian, and the child may not be able to change every setting. If one specific friend cannot receive invites, check whether either player has blocked the other and compare the affected account’s privacy settings with a player for whom invitations work. Change only settings you understand and are authorized to manage.

If invites work between players on the same device type but fail between different platforms, verify that the game supports cross-play for those specific platforms and that both players are using a compatible game version or mode. Cross-play availability can be title- and configuration-specific; support for one platform pairing does not prove support for another.

Some invitation failures originate in a game or service’s session configuration rather than a player’s console settings. Microsoft’s developer-facing Game Development Kit troubleshooting material identifies possible causes such as cross-play configuration, session ownership and invitation permissions, device availability for the title, audience restrictions, and Windows MultiplayerProtocol integration. These are developer-side considerations, not settings for a player to edit. Check the game publisher’s support guidance for the title and platform combination. Test the network when joining or matchmaking fails
Network testing is most relevant when an invitation is accepted but the game cannot connect, or when matchmaking also fails. It is not a universal fix for a missing notification.
- Run the console’s internet connection test and note the reported NAT type, download speed, and upload speed.
- After a network or console change, run the test again so you can tell whether the result changed.
- If the console uses Ethernet and the cable may be damaged, try another Ethernet cable to check whether the original is the problem.
- If NAT or connection problems persist, consult the router manufacturer about firmware or reset questions. Contact your ISP or network administrator when they manage the connection.
Nintendo notes that a non-optimal NAT type can be an obstacle to peer-to-peer connections, and recommends testing the connection and checking NAT and speeds during online matchmaking troubleshooting. Nintendo Support: Unable to Connect With Others Online (Errors During Match-Making Process)
Escalate with details that narrow the cause
If the invite still fails, give the game publisher or platform support a clear account of the symptom. Include:
- The exact game and platform for each player.
- Whether the invite is for voice chat, a game session, or an in-game lobby.
- Whether the issue affects one friend or everyone, and whether both players use the same platform.
- Whether the invite arrives, the exact error text, and whether joining through the game’s own menu works.
- Whether the recipient has the game installed and whether other players can join the session.
Use the game publisher or platform support for game-specific and account-specific failures. For a network fault, contact the router manufacturer, ISP, or network administrator as appropriate.
