To continue a The Witcher 3 save on another platform or edition, use CD PROJEKT RED’s Cross Progression: update the source game, link your CD PROJEKT RED account, enable the feature, make a save and confirm the cloud icon, then link the same account on the destination and load that save. The route depends on whether you’re moving to the PS5 next-generation game, running the PS4 game through backwards compatibility, changing Xbox consoles, or resolving an edition mismatch.
How to use Cross Progression
Cross Progression is CD PROJEKT RED’s documented way to carry progress between supported platforms and between the console base game and GOTY/Complete Edition. It relies on the same CD PROJEKT RED account on both ends; an old local save does not transfer automatically just because the game was updated.
- Update the source game. CD PROJEKT RED says to use the latest patch. Its PS4-to-PS5 next-generation instructions specifically require patch 4.04 on PS4. See the Cross Progression instructions and next-generation transfer instructions.
- Link your source game to your CD PROJEKT RED account. On most platforms, open Load Game and choose Cross Progression, then follow the linking prompts. If needed, check Options → Gameplay to make sure Cross Progression is enabled. On Switch, start at My Rewards, then go to Load Game → Cross Progression. The Switch instructions give that platform-specific sequence.
- Create the save you want to continue. CD PROJEKT RED says the latest saves upload automatically when Cross Progression is active. Make a new save, then check for the cloud icon beside its name before leaving the source platform.
- Link the same account on the destination. Sign in to the CD PROJEKT RED account used on the source through the destination game’s My Rewards or account screen. Open Load Game; the uploaded save should be available there.
The cloud icon is a practical check that the save you intend to use has uploaded. If it is absent, do not assume the save is ready on the other platform.

PS4 to the PS5 next-generation game
Use Cross Progression, not a standard PlayStation console save transfer: update the PS4 game to patch 4.04, link the CD PROJEKT RED account, create and verify the uploaded save, then sign into that same account in the PS5 next-generation game and load it. The official next-generation instructions describe this route.

PS4 game to the PS4 game on PS5 (backwards compatibility)
If you want to keep playing the PS4 version on a PS5, CD PROJEKT RED lists three ways to move the PS4 save: PlayStation Plus cloud saves, a console-to-console LAN or Wi-Fi transfer, or a compatible storage device. The same PlayStation account is required. This is a different process from transferring progress into the PS5 next-generation game; see the PS4-game transfer guidance.
Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S
CD PROJEKT RED says Smart Delivery can continue the game from the cloud save when the console is online. Its other listed option is Xbox system network transfer when both consoles are connected to the same network. Follow the current Xbox transfer instructions.

Nintendo Switch and older GOG or Steam cloud saves
On Switch, start from My Rewards, open or enable Cross Progression, create a save and verify its cloud icon, then sign into the same CD PROJEKT RED account on the destination platform. Players who previously relied on the older GOG and Steam cloud-save integration on Switch need Cross Progression, introduced in update 4.04, to carry saves over. CD PROJEKT RED’s Switch support page has the Switch-specific menu steps.
What to know about Remastered and missing saves
CD PROJEKT RED’s support page for players who cannot find saves after updating to Remastered distinguishes between accounts that already used Cross Progression and those that did not. If you used Cross Progression before, sign in with the same associated CD PROJEKT RED account. If that setup predates CD PROJEKT RED Accounts, the support page points to the account associated with the same email address used for the GOG account at the time. See CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered missing-save guidance.

- You still have the old console, but had not enabled Cross Progression: enable it on that console and upload a save, then use the same account on the destination.
- You never used Cross Progression and no longer have the old console: CD PROJEKT RED says it cannot retrieve those saves.
The official Remastered FAQ says save files remain compatible and Cross Progression continues to function following the edition-content change. It also says Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are now included in the Complete Edition, and names PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 for the Remastered upgrade. Availability and exact steps can vary by platform and change with updates; the FAQ does not provide one universal migration procedure for every platform.

On consoles, the base game and GOTY/Complete Edition are treated as separate products, so their local saves are not compatible with one another. CD PROJEKT RED directs players to Cross Progression to continue between those versions. The destination must also contain the content required by the save:
Rank #4
- From The Witcher, Ciri, as a stylized POP vinyl from Funko
- Stylized collectable stands 3 ¾ inches tall, perfect for any The Witcher fan
- Collect and display all The Witcher POP Vinyls
- A base-game save with no expansions can load in the Complete Edition.
- A Complete Edition save will not load in a base-game installation unless all expansions and DLC used by that save are installed.
These edition and content requirements are described in CD PROJEKT RED’s guidance on save compatibility between base game and GOTY/Complete Edition and its required installed content for loading a save.
Quick Recap
If the save still does not appear
- Confirm the source and destination use the same CD PROJEKT RED account, including the account linked to an older Cross Progression setup.
- Return to the source, check that Cross Progression is enabled, create a fresh save and verify the cloud icon beside it.
- Check that the destination is the intended game version: the PS5 next-generation game and the PS4 game running through backwards compatibility use different transfer routes.
- Check the edition and installed expansions or DLC required by the save.
- If the old console is gone and Cross Progression was never set up, CD PROJEKT RED says it cannot recover the save.
