How Steam Deck Shader Pre-Caching Works—and What It Can Improve

Steam shader pre-caching can move some graphics preparation ahead of gameplay, potentially reducing early stutters and load times when a compatible cache is available.

Steam shader pre-caching downloads pre-compiled shader data when the hardware and graphics-driver setup supports it, shifting some graphics preparation out of gameplay. Valve says this can reduce load times and in-game stuttering during the first few launches of supported OpenGL and Vulkan games. It is not a promise of higher average frame rates, and it does not benefit every game or setup.

What shader pre-caching does

A shader is code the graphics system uses to produce visual effects. When a game needs a shader variant that has not already been prepared for the relevant graphics setup, compiling it can add work around startup or while playing. That work may contribute to a hitch when the game needs the result immediately.

Pre-caching moves some of that preparation earlier: Steam can download pre-compiled shader data where hardware and driver support allow. Valve described the feature as a way to reduce load times and in-game stuttering during the first few launches of supported OpenGL- and Vulkan-based games. This is a qualitative benefit, not a measured improvement for every title.

In a May 2019 client update, Valve described reworking the system to download and pre-compile a game’s collection of Vulkan pipelines; some shader-data downloads could appear in Steam’s download manager. That release-note description explains the approach, but does not establish that every game downloads a complete pipeline collection today. Valve’s May 2019 Steam Client update.

What this means on Steam Deck

Steam Deck runs SteamOS, which Valve describes as Linux-based. Valve also says Proton is the compatibility layer it ships to run Windows games on SteamOS. These platform facts help explain why Steam’s Linux and Vulkan shader work is relevant, but Valve’s public notes cited here do not map every shader through the complete Windows-game, Proton, and graphics-driver pipeline on a Deck. Valve’s SteamOS page.

Valve’s original feature announcement says that, whenever possible and depending on hardware and driver support, Steam can download pre-compiled shaders for a specific video card. A compatible pre-cache is therefore conditional; it should not be assumed to exist for every game, graphics API, or configuration. Valve’s December 13, 2017 Steam Client release note.

What performance improvement to expect

Valve’s stated benefit is less waiting and less in-game stuttering during the first few launches of supported OpenGL and Vulkan games. The mechanism is reducing shader-compilation work at play time when Steam has suitable prepared data available. The cited Valve notes do not quantify an FPS increase, give a percentage reduction in stutter, or guarantee improvement across Steam Deck games.

Valve’s December 2020 client update discusses processing incremental Vulkan shader-database updates and fixes for shader processing continuing in the background after a game started. That supports the distinction between downloading or processing shader data and playing the game, but it does not establish a current Deck-specific processing time or a standard download size. Valve’s December 21, 2020 Steam Client update.

Trade-offs: prepared data versus work during play

  • When compatible pre-cached data is available: Steam can do some shader preparation ahead of time, which may reduce early-session load delays or stutters.
  • When it is unavailable or incompatible: Steam cannot provide that prepared data for the setup, so the feature cannot deliver that particular benefit.
  • What preparation costs: Downloads use bandwidth, and processing can take place in the background. Valve’s historical Linux notes mention additional bandwidth from shader tracking and analysis, but do not establish a fixed amount for a Deck or game. Valve’s 2017 Linux Steam Client notes.

Downloads, storage, and settings: what Valve’s notes establish

Valve’s 2019 client update says some shader-data downloads appear in Steam’s download manager, while its 2020 update describes background processing. Neither note provides a current per-game download size, a Deck-wide cache footprint, or a current settings path.

Valve’s 2017 Linux notes describe a historical desktop implementation in which shader caches for Steam-launched games were kept in folders beside the Steam library and deleted when a game was uninstalled or the graphics driver or card changed. Those notes are not a current Steam Deck file-path guide; do not use them as instructions to alter SteamOS system files. The same historical notes mention an environment variable for disabling the management system, but they do not establish that changing it is an appropriate Deck setting.

  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

The cited feature announcement refers to the Steam Settings dialog, but these historical sources do not establish the present Steam Deck menu labels or the exact current path for changing shader pre-caching. Avoid relying on an old desktop path as a Deck-specific instruction.
