To strengthen your PlayStation account, set up a passkey or use a unique password with two-step verification (2SV), then save your recovery codes and secure the consoles and devices where you sign in. You can make these changes through Account Management without buying a new console or security key. Menu labels and device screens may change; the paths below are based on PlayStation’s current US support guidance.
Choose a sign-in setup that fits your devices
A passkey replaces password sign-in on supported PlayStation devices and services. Two-step verification adds a code to password sign-in. A unique password helps prevent a password leaked or reused elsewhere from being used to access your PlayStation account, but it does not replace 2SV.
| Method | How sign-in works | Compatibility and recovery considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Passkey | Use a device prompt such as a fingerprint, face scan, or screen-lock PIN instead of typing an account password. | Supported on listed PlayStation platforms and many newer mobile devices, but not every device or browser combination works. Passkey availability can depend on the device or synced password manager. |
| Password with 2SV | Enter your password, then a unique code delivered by SMS or generated by an authenticator app. | You need access to the registered verification method or a single-use backup code. If neither is available, account recovery may require help from PlayStation. |
| Unique password | Enter a password used only for your PlayStation account. | It reduces the risk from password reuse, but you still need to protect the password and keep account recovery access current. |
PlayStation’s support pages do not publish a measured security ranking among these methods. The practical choice depends on the devices you use and whether you can reliably recover access. PlayStation describes passkeys as a password replacement that can use biometrics or a screen-lock PIN; see its passkey setup and compatibility guide.
Set up a passkey
- From a browser: Open Account Management, go to Security, choose Sign in with Passkey, then Create a Passkey. Follow the prompts on your device. Sony says it sends an email confirmation after setup.
- From PS5: Open Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey and follow the prompts. The console may show a QR code for completing setup on a phone.
- Check the sign-in on your devices: Sony lists passkey support on PS5, PS4, the PlayStation website, PlayStation App, and Remote Play for Mac. Mobile support is listed for most devices running iOS 16 or later and Android 9 or later. For web sign-in, Sony recommends a current version of Safari, Chrome, or Edge.
Compatibility is not universal. Sony notes that some hardware security keys can cause problems, cautions against using an Android PIN code as a passkey, and documents issues involving Remote Play on Mac, outdated browsers, and some Android/Windows combinations. Check the official passkey troubleshooting and compatibility details if setup fails.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key NFC via USB-A and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Manage or recover a passkey
Add or remove passkeys through Account Management > Security > Manage Passkeys. A passkey may also be available on other devices that share the same passkey or password manager. If you cannot use it at sign-in, select Can’t Sign In with Passkey and follow the offered email or QR-code fallback. To return to password sign-in, disable passkey sign-in and create a password.
Enable two-step verification and prepare recovery
With 2SV enabled, PlayStation asks for your password and then a unique verification code sent by SMS or obtained from an authenticator app. Turn it on in your account’s security settings; the exact labels can vary with the device interface. Sony’s two-step verification page explains the feature.

Save the backup codes before you need them
Sony says it provides 10 backup codes, each usable once. Store them somewhere you can reach if you lose your phone, but not in a place accessible to someone who could also access your account. If you cannot receive a code, use Trouble Receiving Code? and then Sign In Using a Backup Code. Follow Sony’s 2SV troubleshooting steps if the code does not arrive.
If you lose access to your registered phone, a backup code can provide a way to sign in. If you have no backup code or phone number, or cannot access the email needed for account recovery, Sony directs you to its Online Assistant. Its account recovery guide lists the recovery route.

Use a unique password if you sign in with one
Do not reuse a password from email, another gaming account, or any other service. A password manager can help you create and keep track of distinct passwords; PlayStation also recommends using a password manager or passkey rather than trying to remember multiple complex passwords.
To change or reset a password, use Account Management > Trouble Signing In? > Recover Your Account. Sony sends a secure link to the email address on the account. Follow that link to create a replacement password; Sony gives a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters as an example. See PlayStation’s password change and reset instructions.

Protect the devices and account around your sign-in
- Keep account details private. PlayStation’s advice is direct: “Never share your account details with anyone else.”
- Do not scan reward QR codes from strangers. Sony warns against QR codes promising free vouchers, gift cards, in-game items, or other rewards.
- Avoid signing in on public or shared devices. If you must use a shared console, sign out afterward. Sony also provides a remote sign-out option.
- Set a console login passcode. This adds a barrier to someone using your console after you have signed in.
- Consider purchase protection. Sony recommends Require Password at Checkout to help prevent unauthorized purchases. That setting is not compatible with accounts using passkeys, so weigh the purchase safeguard against passkey sign-in before enabling it.
These recommendations and the associated console settings are covered in PlayStation’s security best-practices guide.
