If your Nintendo Switch 2 does not recognize a game card, first close any suspended game, then remove and reinsert the card with its label facing the screen until it clicks. Restart the console, check that the card is compatible, install available system and game updates, and gently clean the card with a soft, dry cloth. The number of cards affected helps determine whether the problem is with one card or the console.

Identify what the console is doing

Check the HOME Menu and note whether the game’s software icon appears. Nintendo’s Switch 2 troubleshooting guide covers three different messages: “There is nothing inserted in the game card slot,” “The game card could not be read. Please remove and reinsert it,” and “Unable to start software. Return to the menu and try again.” The message and whether other cards work help narrow down the next step. Try these steps in order

  1. Close the suspended game. Do not remove a card while its software is suspended. Return to the HOME Menu, or power off the console before removing the card.
  2. Restart the console. After it restarts, check whether the card’s software icon appears on the HOME Menu.
  3. Confirm the card is supported. Switch 2 supports cards for Switch 2 exclusive software (including game-key cards), Switch 2 Edition software, and compatible original Nintendo Switch software. Compatibility for original Switch titles is software-specific and may change as Nintendo continues testing and issuing updates. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information.
  4. Reinsert it carefully. The label should face the same direction as the console screen. Slide the card in until it clicks. If it resists, stop, remove it, and check its orientation; do not force it.
  5. Update the console and game. Install the latest available system update and check for an update for the affected software.
  6. Gently wipe the card. Use a soft, dry fabric, such as an eyeglasses or screen-cleaning cloth. Nintendo warns against using liquids, which could damage the card or console. Cleaning is a safe check, not a guaranteed fix.
  7. Test another compatible game card, if available. Whether one or several cards fail is useful when deciding whether to seek service.

Check for a game-key card setup issue

A game-key card does not contain the full game data. It is used to download the full game over the internet, and the card must remain inserted to start the game. If the card is recognized but the game is not ready to launch, connect the console to the internet and complete the download before trying again. Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information.

Make sure the card and console are compatible

A Switch 2 exclusive game card will not work in an original Nintendo Switch. A Switch 2 Edition card can be inserted into an original Switch, but only the original Switch version of the game plays there, without the Switch 2 enhancements. If a card is being used in the wrong console generation, that is a compatibility issue rather than evidence of a faulty card reader. Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information.
