How to Fix Gears of War: E-Day Crashes, Launch Errors, and Stuttering on PC

Start with the October 5 update, an SSD install, and a current GPU driver. Then follow targeted checks for Xbox app errors, capture conflicts, shader compilation, and Intel Arc.

Start with the October 5, 2026 game update, then check that E-Day is installed on an SSD and that your graphics driver is current. Those are the broadest official troubleshooting steps for PC crashes and stuttering. For launch errors, the right fix depends on where you play: Xbox PC app users who see LowLevelFatalError should try Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool. Shader stutter and long first launches may also relate to shader compilation or hardware support.

1. Install the latest E-Day update and restart

E-Day launched globally on October 6, 2026. The Coalition’s October 5 update includes broad stability, performance, and hardware-compatibility improvements. Confirm the update—or a newer one—is installed through your storefront, then fully close and relaunch the game. The update notes describe general improvements, not a fix for every PC crash. Read the October 5 update notes.

2. Check whether the game is installed on an SSD

The official E-Day FAQ says mechanical hard drives are unsupported and can cause severe loading problems, missing assets, stuttering, or crashes. Check the drive where the game is installed. If it is a mechanical HDD, move or reinstall the game to a compatible SSD and retest. If E-Day is already on an SSD, this is not a reason to buy another drive. The FAQ is beta-era known-issue guidance, so it does not guarantee that every SSD-related symptom has the same cause. See the official E-Day FAQ.

3. Update the graphics driver for your exact GPU

Older graphics drivers are listed in the official FAQ as a possible launch blocker. The FAQ’s minimum driver numbers were published for the beta and should not be treated as current launch requirements. Instead, identify your GPU and install the latest driver offered by its manufacturer:

Choose the driver for your specific GPU and operating system. Restart Windows after installing it, then try launching the game again.

4. Isolate capture, antivirus, and account conflicts

If the game crashes while recording

The beta-era FAQ identifies older OBS versions as a possible cause of crashes and recommends OBS 29.0.0 or newer. Update OBS and retest on the current game build; alternatively, temporarily test without recording to see whether capture is involved. This is a documented lead, not proof that OBS is the cause of every crash during gameplay.

If security software blocks the game

The FAQ says third-party antivirus software can block game executables. Check its alerts or quarantine history. If it has blocked an E-Day file, follow the antivirus vendor’s instructions to allow the legitimate game executable. Do not leave security protection disabled as a general troubleshooting step.

If you use the Xbox PC app

The FAQ notes that using different accounts in the Xbox app and Windows Store can prevent online play. Check that both apps use the intended account. For an Xbox PC app launch error that specifically shows LowLevelFatalError, Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool is the official recommended repair. These FAQ findings are beta-era troubleshooting guidance, not universal diagnoses.

5. Check shader compilation if startup is slow or stutter appears shader-related

Shader compilation can lengthen a first launch and contribute to shader-related stutter. Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) supplies precompiled shaders with the download, reducing shader work at startup on supported Windows 11 systems. For E-Day, Microsoft says to install the Xbox PC app before downloading the game. ASD requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or higher and supported hardware; check Microsoft’s DirectX explanation of Advanced Shader Delivery for E-Day for current compatibility details.

Microsoft’s DirectX Developer Blog reported that ASD reduced shader compilation time by approximately 95% for E-Day on supported hardware in 2026, describing compilation as taking a few seconds with ASD compared with several minutes on a typical PC without it. That figure applies to the supported setup Microsoft describes; it is not a guarantee of a 95% reduction in every player’s startup time or in-game stutter.

6. Intel Arc owners: check Resizable BAR, Above 4G Decoding, and BIOS

The official FAQ says Intel Arc cards may recompile shaders every time E-Day launches. It also warns that performance on the Arc A580 and B580 may be reduced when Resizable BAR is disabled. If you have one of those cards, check whether Resizable BAR and Above 4G Decoding are enabled. The FAQ also advises Intel users to update their BIOS; use your PC or motherboard manufacturer’s instructions because the update process varies by system. These are documented compatibility checks, not a guarantee that changing a setting will resolve every Arc issue. Consult the official FAQ.

7. If the problem persists, check official support and report useful details

Before making deeper system changes, check the game’s support information and service status from Xbox Wire’s E-Day launch announcement. If you contact support, include details that help distinguish a game issue from a configuration or storefront problem:
