Check the card’s label to identify its generation, insert it label-facing the screen until it clicks, then look for the game icon on the HOME Menu. An icon confirms that the console detected the card; it does not guarantee that an original Nintendo Switch game is fully compatible. Check that specific game’s Nintendo page or eShop listing before relying on it.

Identify which kind of game card you have

Nintendo Switch 2 supports physical cards for Switch 2 software—including game-key cards and Switch 2 Edition cards—as well as cards for compatible Nintendo Switch software. The card or its packaging should indicate whether it is for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, or Nintendo Switch.

Compatibility is not reciprocal: a Switch 2-exclusive game card will not run on an original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo addresses this in its Switch 2 FAQ.

Insert the card and check for its icon

  1. Open the game-card slot cover on the console.
  2. Hold the card with its label facing the screen. Nintendo gives this direction in its game-card insertion instructions.
  3. Slide the card into the slot until it clicks. If it resists, remove it and check its orientation; do not force it.
  4. Look for the software icon on the HOME Menu. If it appears, the console has detected the card.

Detection is not the same as confirmed full compatibility. An original Switch card may be recognized while its game has unsupported features or other compatibility issues on Switch 2.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Check an original Switch game’s compatibility

Before counting on an original Nintendo Switch game, check the individual title’s Nintendo product page or Nintendo eShop entry for its current compatibility information. Nintendo says some Switch games may not be supported or may have partial compatibility issues because Switch 2 hardware differs.

Nintendo’s compatibility-status page says its displayed test-status information is current as of June 5, 2025. Nintendo also notes that testing is limited—“During testing, games are started and limited testing is conducted”—and results can change. Treat that page as a dated status report, not an exhaustive guarantee. Some older games may also require original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers for particular functions; check the title-specific information for any such requirement.

Know what a game-key card requires

A Switch 2 game-key card is not the full game stored on the card. On first use, it requires an internet connection to download the game and enough free space on the console or a microSD Express card. After downloading, keep the game-key card inserted whenever you play.

If the game does not appear

  • Card will not go in: Remove it and check that the label faces the screen. Do not force it into the slot.
  • No icon appears: Remove and reinsert the card in the correct orientation until it clicks, then check the HOME Menu again.
  • The icon appears but the game has a problem: Check the game’s Nintendo product page or eShop compatibility details; detection alone does not establish full compatibility.
  • You have a game-key card: Connect to the internet, make sure there is enough download storage, and leave the card inserted during play.
